I just purchased the Techics SL-P7 CD at Lechmere for $299 - I must have been waiting for the price to get below $300 - and i'm excited about it. Its a pretty "bare-bones" unit - no remote and few features, but the sound is great. Now its embarrasing my speakers and amplifier. My only gripe is that when I first tried it, after unlocking the shipping clamps, it refused to read the disk. I turned it over to check that I had loosened all the clamps enough and when I turned it back it decided to work. It has failed again a couple of times and i'm wondering if I have a lemon, or whether it will loosen up after some use. Has anyone else seen this problem? I did notice the high pitched noise of the the tracking that was mentioned earlier in this file. [ Now that i've bought a CD for $299 the prices are sure to drop further so there is hope for all you would-be CD purchasers...] Maurice

My first Toshiba unit had a problem reading disks. (If the ECC fails and guesstiamtes fail, all players just switch the output off). I excahnged it and have had no problems since (about 6 months now). | |||||

I have had a Mitsubishi DP-103 for a few months now. It runs great, except every now and again when you turn the power on with a disc loaded, it meanders around the disc for a few seconds and then displays an E in the track display. Sometimes (when the moon is right?) it will also open the load door and present you with the disc. If you press PLAY when the E is displayed, it will start and run just fine. I assume the problem is that it left the pickup in the wrong place when it was shut off (I always do a STOP first, tho..) and can't find itself when it starts up again. The owners manual makes no reference to this at all. ...tek |
