28.0. "Sampler discs?" by KRYPTN::T_KOPEC () Wed Aug 15 1984 09:45

  Last night, I picked up a copy of a Phillips sampler disc (Hear the Light,
Vol. 1) and I'm basically not impressed with it. It sounds like the kind of
mastering that makes people wonder why they'd want to spend all that money on
a CD player (no highs, so-so imaging, fuzzy bass). I have seen a few different
samplers in audio shops, but I haven't been able to buy any of them. Anybody
out there know where there is a selection of samplers?

  (Duran-Duran: "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" is still my favorite demo disc..)

Three weeks ago I was at Tweeter in the Mall of NH and they were selling
Telark Sampler's Vol 1 & 2. They were in a box on the floor behind the
counter. (Definately a great place to find CD's for sale). I'm not sure
how many they had or if they were going to get any more but he said that
they were selling fast.

Currently I'm just in the observation stage so it really didn't interest me.

"Digital Domain" put out by Warner is a good sampler, it shows the quality
of mastering possible when all digital is used. It contains a lot of
computer generated music and finishes up with some test signals (square
and sine waves). It starts off with 15 seconds of "silent groove" so
you can see how well your electronics are performing when reading 0's.
