18.0. "Classical Selections" by GOLD::WEAVER () Mon Apr 16 1984 20:41

It appears that the Electric Gramaphone in Sudbury has the biggest
selection of classical titles around (450+ classical, 50+ misc).

Can anyone report on the Harvard COOP's selection? I haven't been
in to Harvard Square for a few months and I am wondering what labels
they have.

The Harvard COOP has a huge selection of CDs, in all flavors (Classical,
Pop, Jazz). They seem to have all of the major labels, as well as some
that I had not really heard of before.

The Harvard Coop has a fine selection of Classical CD's. We probably got
more than half of our collection there. I expect you could find Deutche
Grammophon, Archiv, Philips, London, CBS, EMI, Nonesuch, etc. I expect that
distance (are you in the vacinity of Sudbury or Cambridge) and price (sales,
regular prices and whether you're a COOP member) are really what makes one
store or the other a better place to go for classical CDs.

Other labels available at the Harvard COOP...

Varese Sarabande, TELDEC, Chandos, ProArte, RCA

The classical selection is good, but you have to
hunting through all the bottom shelves, racks and
	boxes.

I was at Electric Grammophone last weekend (First weekend in June, 85).
The store had been "turned around". The old style records are now
where the CDs used to be, and vice versa. The records were so cramped
that Mendolson records are in a box on the floor. On the other hand,
there is now plenty of space for the CDs.

Electric Grammophone plans to be completely out of the record business
by the end of the year. Apparently, records account for only 8% of
his sales, and he can't justify the inventory. The cassette tapes
will stay, since they are still more convenient for automobile systems.
There may be a "fire sale" of records, or they may donate them to a
school or library.

It is sort of sad to think of no more records, but on the other hand
I have not bought one in years...
