17.0. "Windham Hill titles" by GOLD::WEAVER () Mon Apr 16 1984 20:36

I have recently gone wild buying 6 of the 8 Windham Hill CD's that
are available. I highly recommend them to anyone who is in to
Avant-Garde music (note: no vocals).

My favorites are:

George Winston "December" - solo piano
Michael Ackerman "Past Light" & "Passage" - guitar + other instruments
note that "Passage" is relatively short (34 mins).
Liz Story "Solid Colors" - solo piano

As of Saturday (4/14/84):
Tweeter (Framingham) had the about 3 or 4 titles left
Electric Gramaphone (Sudbury) had one "December" left
Lechmere (Framingham) had 2 "December"s left
Strawberries (Framingham) had 3 or 4 titles

The CD's are produced from analog masters, of the 4 mentioned above
I think "Past Light" had the most noticeable tape hiss, but it was
negligible enough for me. All in all I think they are the most superbly
"digitized" analog recordings that I have heard.

					    enjoy,
					    -Dave

The record store in Maynard (Flip Side) carries a number of WH title.

I'm listening to "An Evening with Windham Hill LIVE". A very nice recording
considering it isn't studio work... A few more purchases are in order with
this label!

17.3Update on Windham HillPARSEC::PESENTIJPSun Jan 11 1987 14:5741
I know this is an old note, but I've recently gotten into the
Windham Hill label, after seeing "Wolftrap - An Evening with
Windham Hill" on PBS. There are now a few more than 8 cd's
available from WH since Dave's original note. Here's what
	I've got and my opinions:

	George Winston -
	 December - piano solos
Billed by some as a Christmas album. Yeah, "The Holly
and the Ivy" and "Carol of the Bells" are undeniably
XMAS, but the rest is great piano for all seasons.
Particularly nice arrangements of "Joy" and Pachelbel's
		"Kanon".
Winter Into Spring - piano solos
More great piano sounds, for all seasons.

	Malcolm Dalglish -
Jogging the Memory - Solo Hammer Dulcimer
Excellent, unique sound, particularly "St. Basil's Hymn"
reviewed by me in note 595.

	William Ackerman -
Past Light - Guitar plus other intruments
The other instuments are supplied by the folks from
Shadowfax and others. "Visiting", guitar, lyricon, and
fretless bass, is particularly nice. A bit of background
hiss, but not much compared to the range of the music.

	Shadowfax -
	 Shadowdance - Ensemble
"Brown Rice" is a great example of using the voice as
an instrument. Technically, it's a vocal, but not in the
		traditional sense.
Too Far to Whisper - Ensemble
An excellent blend of normal and unusual acoustic and
		electronic instruments.

I had never heard of this label, until a department store here in
town suddenly started advertising it as a ``limited edition''
label. I bought one at random -

		Mike Marshall/Darol Anger - ``Chiaroscuro'' 371043-2 (ADD)

absolutely thrilling! Tomorrow I'm off for some more!

Has anyone seen a CD by Ruby Braff (jazz trumpeter)? he did a couple
of LPs with George Barnes (guitarist) on CHiaroscuro, which I'd
    like to own in CD.

17.7MONTREUX on Windham Hill...CHOVAX::RULLOMon Apr 04 1988 13:367
I've been following a band known as MONTREUX which is relatively
new as a band. They started out at MONTREUX JAZZ and decided
to make themselves official as a band last year. They have only
one disc as MONTREUX called SIGN LANGUAGE which is great. The first
offering prior to the formation of MONTREUX (the band)
is called "Darol Anger/Barbara Higby - Live at MONTREUX", thus the
bands' name. That disc is also excellent. Check 'em out.

"A Winter's Soltice II" is a nice recording. It's not as good as the
original "A Winter's Solstice". What I'd *really* enjoy is putting
them both in a multidisc player and using shuffle play. (One of the
few uses for shuffle in my personal opinion.) I'm sure I will always
prefer the original, but I'm not putting "II" up for sale. I wish I
could be more specific, but I'm not sure how. Any particular
    questions, ask away!

I got it for $10 at the Price Club. I think it is much better than
the original. It times at over 49 minutes and has 15 selections
from just about all the WH artists. It has a nice mix of classical
arrangements and very old period works with a few tasty originals
thrown in. Sound quality is EXCELLENT!

I particularly enjoyed Michael Hedges' interpretation of the
Prelude to Cello Suite #1 on the harp guitar. The bass notes
    are very earthy.
