7.0. "CD Titles" by GOLD::WEAVER () Thu Dec 29 1983 23:39

How about some discussions about peoples favorite and not so favorite
CD's. Has anyone heard of any new and interesting titles coming out
recently? Note that at least three of the major stereo magazines are
starting to have regular columns for reviews of CD titles (Stereo Review,
High Fidelity, and Audio). Audio magazine has also published a special
"Digital" edition which goes into great discussion about the CD format
as well as PCM.

There has been a lot of CD reviews in the magazines here since about one
year now. There are three or four major HiFi magazines left now, as one
of them (HiFi Stereophonie) was swallowed by Stereoplay.

If anyone needs something specific I'm willing to have a look round the
local dealers here; I would assume that there might be more CDs availabe here
at this time. Somewhere I saw the figure of almost 1000 CD titles available
in GY. On the other hand, there are certainly discs availabe in U.S. but not
here, so anyone interested in an exchange pls contact me.

What is the going price of CD's over in Germany and the rest of Europe?

The typical price here is DM 30 - 40 (about $10.70 - 14). Most classical records
cost about $13.20 and pop/jazz about $12.15 (assuming a dollar exchange rate of
DM 2.80).

I can remember when it was DM2.00 for US$ 1.00, just a few years
ago. The current exchange rate is not the "natural" one, and
is caused by high interest rates in the USA. This can change
pretty quickly, so hopefully we are not condemned to gnashing
our teeth over the "bargains" in Europe.

Here CD disks cost about the same as audiophile analog pressings,
if you get them from some place that gives a discount. List
price is higher, about $19. What do analog digital records
sell for over there? That would give a better comparison.

(But anyone going to Europe in the next year might consider
loading up on cheap disks before the rates go back where they
should be.)

Analog record prices vary a lot here; most new releases cost around DM 17-19
(indepndent of label and recording technology) for pop/rcok/jazz.
Classical records tend to be a bit more expensive, around DM 20-22.

Audiophile pressings can be much more expensive. the most expensive ones
I've seen are those by Sheffield lab, which sell for DM 54 here.
That's definitely MUCH more than any CD here.

Just a couple of days ago I bought a few analog records. Just F.Y.I.:

1) Dire Straits: Love over gold (Vertigo, digital master) DM 16,90.
2) Pat Metheny: Travels '84 (ECM, ??? master, double-LP) DM 21,90
3) Maria Farantouri etc. (DMM, but analog master I think) DM 16,90

I see where the Schwann catalog now has a CD section. They
claim to list all available disks. I didn't count them.
No indication as to which have analog masters, though.

Any reasonable size record store will have the Schwann catalog
for sale for a few dollars. It comes out monthly.
