A. Background
This bulletin addresses CERT advisories CA-95.05, CA-96.20, and
CA-96.24.
In recent months, public domain sendmail developments have
uncovered several security vulnerabilities. Hewlett-Packard has
added the required fixes into our current sendmail releases.
Prior to the new patches associated with this bulletin,
Hewlett-Packard provided the following versions of sendmail:
HP-UX 9.X through HP-UX 10.10 : sendmail 5.65
HP-UX 10.20 (as shipped) : sendmail 8.7.1.1
HP-UX 10.20 + PHNE_8702 : sendmail 8.7.5
The sendmail program is located in (/usr/{sbin,lib}/sendmail),
i.e., /usr/sbin/sendmail or /usr/lib/sendmail, depending on
your system).
B. Hewlett-Packard continues to patch the 5.65 version of sendmail on
those releases with which it originally shipped (all pre-10.20
HP-UX). Similarly, the HP-UX release 10.20 started shipping
sendmail 8.7.1.1; a companion patch PHNE_8702 brought the sendmail
program to release level 8.7.5 functionality.
Applying the 10.20 patch associated with this security bulletin
will upgrade sendmail to version 8.7.6. This sendmail release has
been found to be stable and is a patch level with which
Hewlett-Packard currently feels comfortable.
The remaining patches associated with this bulletin provide a
patched version of sendmail 5.65.
C. Recommended solution
Apply the patches appropriate to your system release level.
D. Impact of the patch
Applying the 10.20 patch associated with this security bulletin
will upgrade sendmail /usr/sbin/sendmail binary to version 8.7.6.
This sendmail release has been found to be stable and is a patch
level with which Hewlett-Packard currently feels comfortable.
The remaining patches associated with this bulletin provide a
patched version of sendmail 5.65.
