| All Mod Cons - The Jam
A perfect pop album.
Fine rhythms and great tunes. A perfect snapshot of Britain at that time.
Something that the Fred Perry wearing wannabes of the current new wave
should go home and listen to, and then come back when they can create
something as cohesive.

Green - REM
Just a superbly constructed album, and some nice little ditties too !!
Also, because of its faults. I don't know if anyone else has noticed on
a number of copies (on the tape this is ) the track-listings apply to
the wrong sides, ie. Pop Song 89 is on side 2 etc. And instead of track
4 it says track R !! You would never know that I'd listened to thia
album a lot would you.
Now then, all together, Stand in the place where you live..........
Love it !!
Ian.

King of America - Elvis Costello.
I'm not sure exactly why this would be the one for me - but it would be.
It has the ability to make me wistful, melancholic and happy.

That one's pretty close to my own heart too.
Ackshirley, it's a mighty difficult choice, and I'll probably have
changed my mind by this time tomorrow For the moment, I'll plump for:
"Out Of Our Heads" - The Rolling Stones
Only 30 years old this one, and almost totally derivative. But if you want
a good knees-up, it beats any 70s punk band hollow. And any white
singer with the courage to cover Otis Redding, Larry Williams, Sam Cooke,
Don Covay and Marvin Gaye on one LP deserves *something*!

Mike(F) and I tried doing this back in '89 and managed to narrow
it down to a top ten - and that caused enough controversy!
My top ten then was:
Smiths - 'Queen is Dead'
Lloyd Cole - 'Rattlesnakes'
Waterboys - 'This is the Sea'
REM - 'Document'
New Order - 'Brotherhood'
U2 - 'War'
Jesus & Mary Chain - 'Darklands'
Prefab Sprout - 'Steve McQueen'
Billy Bragg - 'Talking with the Taxman about poetry'
The The - 'Uncertain Smile'
Mike's list (I can put this in as he's in Munich and can't defend
himself!) was:
Prince - 'Sign of the Times'
Tom Waits 'Swordfish Trombone'
Joy Division - 'Closer'
U2 - 'Unforgettable Fire'
New Order - 'Power, corruption & lies'
Lloyd Cole - 'Rattlesnakes'
Billy Bragg - 'Talking with the taxman...'
REM - 'Document'
Smith - 'Queen is Dead'
Miles Davis - 'Kind of Blue'.
I think the lists will have changed alot since then, but if pushed
I'd probably plump for Darklands, because I just love it - love the
songs, love their voices, love the lyrics, etc.
Honourable mentions would also go to 'Bizzaro' (Wedding Present) for
thrashing guitars and 'Candleland' (Ian McCulloch) because it's just
sooo beautiful.

| Well, if lists are now allowed...
Hawkwind - er, um (there's so many of the buggers!) "Stasis", probably.
Black Sabbath - "Never Say Die"
Lush - "Gala"
Pink Floyd - "Wish You Were Here"
Toyah - "The Changeling"
Cocteau Twins - "Heaven or Las Vegas"
The Macc Lads - "From Beer to Eternity"
Ultravox - "Quartet"
Motorhead - "Bomber"
King Crimson - "Sleepless"
That's today's choice anyway, it'll probably be different tomorrow, and
the day after, etc...
Chris.

| Contenders.....
Old School Stuff
Back In Black - AC/DC
Never Mind The B*ll*cks - The Sex Pistols
Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars - Bowie
Newer up and coming types
Music For The Jilted Generation - The Prodigy
Definately Maybe - Oasis
Elastica - Elastica
Bossanova - The Pixies(perhaps this is old school)
Trouble is so many albums have one blinding side and a duff flipside.
Can we have combiantions ???

| None of yer rock milestones for me. Quite simply some of the exquisite
pop music ever recorded.......Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout.
Or perhaps The Flat Earth by Thomas Dolby.
