1319.0. "Alanis Morissette" by GRANPA::FDEADY (I like this resonance, it elevates me. Bjork) Thu Aug 03 1995 04:44

Has Alanis Morissette shown up yet in the UK. If not she will soon. Her
debut CD "Jagged Little Pill," and debut single ""You Oughta Know," is
getting noticed. Her style is somewhat a cross between Bjork, Liz
Phair, and PJ Harvey. She has something to say and doesn't mince the
lyrics. A strong first release from a new Canadian artist, I think she'll
be successful. My early favourite on the disc is "All I Really Want."

    "Do I stress you out
My sweater is on backwards and inside out"

    cheers as always,

Strange that, I saw a big poster on a wall last night avertising
her new (first?) single.

She looks a bit snoozealongaladysingersongwriter, but I must say
I have a penchant for P J Harvey, so maybe it's worth checking out.

Cheers, Fred! I think I heard that a couple of weeks ago, and wondered who it
was. Is the whole song her ranting on at her man? As you said, powerful stuff!

Is this the track that's getting a lot of airplay at the moment and has
obviously been edited for Radio ? Some new singer/songwriter person
    signed to Madonna's label....

I bought the album last week on the strength of the single (I suppose I
like women singers who swear). I've not yet had a good chance to listen
to the majority of it, only the first two tracks (the one Fred likes,
    and the single).

This is a great album. .0 describes it pretty well. After a few listens the
first two tracks are the best, but the rest are pretty close. The couple of
quiet ones sound out of place musically, but they're no nicer than most of the
rest. It also has a twist on the 'extra track on the end' where Track 12
contains an unaccompanied song as well as the advertised one.

I'm not sure how long she'll last though. Those songs must have taken a few
years to write (and lost her a few 'friends') - I can't imagine a second
album.

I saw a feature on her recently. She's on a world-wide tour which goes on for
another year yet! Asked what material she'd be using for the next album she
said she wouldn't think about it until after the tour. So it'll probably be
the same stuff, but ranting on at record companies, promoters, airlines,
hotelzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

If you aren't a big fan of PJ Harvey-lite, here is something I've been
