Mike, a few suggestions :-
o try ordering them by colour.... all the Red spined ones, all the
green spined ones etc - it'd be a bugger to find a particular LP
though, if you couldn't remember the colour.
o put the most recently played one at one end, you could combine this
with not playing anything that was in the most recent twenty.
o By album title, rather than band/artist.
o By Producer/Engineer/Photographer/Cover artist ?
o By Record Label ?
o By duration - longest at one end, shortest at the other - has the
added advantage that if you've got a spare 37 minutes say, before
your favourite TV prog, you could select an LP of appropriate length.
o Best Covers at one end worst at the other ?
...loads of other ideas, but I'll let someone else have a go.
BTW, I keep mine in alphabetical order by artist, with solo work filed
under the band name.
I have three of those Laserline Cd storage boxes, they're pretty good
but only hold 24 CD's (and only single ones) each and they're held
horizontally rather than vertically which I'd prefer. The other 150 or so
and all the doubles/special packaging ones are in an MFI bookcase - not
really ideal, I know.
Graham.

thanks...I like the colour option..
I may go for an intuitive approach, so it just feels right...
yeah - I hate those horizontal slotty things also...Hmm, anyone who
reads this conference and is into woodwork could probably see a
money-making opportunity here...

probably okay for coasters, but definitely NOT the way to store to
vinyl !
comne to think of it, what's the safe stacking height (before the one
at the bottom gets crushed) for CD jewel cases ? are some manufactures
cases better than others ? could injury be caused to a small child, dog
or cat if a stack of CD's was pulled over - I think we should be told
(in an annoying Scottish accent, if possible), these things are
dangerous and should be banned, or at least carry a safety warning like
cocktail sticks and other lethal weapons.....

and come to think of it, why don't CDs have a 'dangerous if swallowed'
warning on the case?

1309.9 | | SHIPS::RIOT01::SUMMERFIELD | I am Number 6 | Tue Jul 11 1995 15:27 | 15 |
| Mine live in these sexy, pine racks which hold them vertically. No
distinctions between singles and doubles. Each rack holds about (I
haven't checked lately) 180 CDs. I got them from Summerfield's DIY
Furniture Centre :^)
I used to store them in alphabetic order, but that became boring. These
days they are in a (fairly) random order which has the added benefit
that, when looking for a specific CD, I will quite often browse through
them and happen upon a rarely listened to gem. Such discoveries make CD
ownership even more worthwhile.

PS I like the colour concept.

1309.10 | | WOTVAX::GILLILANDP | I've been mad for ******* years | Tue Jul 11 1995 15:33 | 12 |
| I had a horizontal stacking system. Not particularly nice to look at and
after I added the 12th unit, it occurred to me that when they stop being
manufactured, I would have to start again with another system if it
were to look right. So I chucked `em all away and bought some decent
wall shelves. You can get some nice looking systems now which can be
expanded fairly easily, but they're not cheap at about a hundred quid
for 4 x 1 metre shelves and associated brackets and fixings.
As for what order to place them in, couldn't you write something in
Datatrieve Mike? :-)

Hmmm, I think I like the sound of the colour order idea too - why
didn't I think of it before ? It'll have the added advantage that most
of my friends won't know where to find a particular album, so when they
pop round to drink my beer, eat my food and listen to my music at least
I'll get to choose the music...
...it's all a bit academic at the moment tho' case I've got nowhere to
put my turntable %^/

| Well, I've got 3 of those crappy double draw cabinet things, from Argos, and I
keep the rest on a long shelf back home in Swansea. Most of them end up strewn
around the boot of the car, now though, cos I can never be bothered to take the
cases back in when I change the disks round.
I'm all for keeping them in random order (the most recently listened-to
naturally end up on the top), on a nice big shelf.

| I just keep mine in a random order with the most frequently/lastest played
snippets migrating to the top. Probably explains why Right Said Fred is
at the very bottom!!
IKEA's a great place for cheapo CD racks, especially the vertical variety.
When I have some money I might start filling up the one which is still in its
box ;-(((

Mine are kept in whacking great black rack, hold 500 - ish (maybe a few
more). A snip at 150 from a company called Covers 33. They advertise
in Record Collector, and I recommend them highly. I can get the phone
number / address if anybody's interested.
The only problem is that the rack is nearly full, and it's going to look
really stupid with one 6ft monolith with 500 CDs in it and another with
2 CDs and coffee mug in it.

Oh yes, all mine are in totally random order, although the most recent
tend to percolate to the top shelf. The only only exception is that
ones in crappy cardboard TurdoPaks (tm) all get shoved to one side.

With a fast enough link and decent graphics, I bet we could even fling
