| I believe it was referred to the "Monopolies and Mergers Commission", who
submitted the view that there was no monopoly in effect. This is supposedly
how the CSC got out of the potential strife with record companies. They set up
an inquiry into something where there is obviously a problem, but they were
looking for a different problem. There obviously isn't a monopoly, because
there are alternative purchases.
Anyway, dismounting my bandwagon/gravy train, I recon you should be looking in
"Which" magazine who did a report on these findings a few months ago. Maybe
you could write to Which, or whoever they are the mouthpiece for.

| Any report by the Select Committee will definitely be available through
HM Stationery Office. Most major cities and towns have one agent (In
reading it is Blackwells) and they will be able to tellyou if the
Report is available.
The MMC may also be available through HMSO but I'm not sure if this is
the case.

| If you haven't found it by then, I'll have a look through some which?s next time
I'm back home. I definitely remember reading it, cos I thought it was a
whitewash.

| Just curious, what is the average price of a CD over there?
Here in Toronto, Canada (at least on the downtown strip), new releases
usually cost $14 - $17 Canadian. I'm not sure about the current exchange
rate, but that probably translates to about 8 - 10 pounds.
The reason I ask is that I recently bought a UK import for $40!!! That
is the most I've ever paid for a single UK import. Have prices shot up
recently?

| Albums normally come out at somewhere around 12 in the stores. They
then drop to ~10 when they're less popular.
CD singles ~4.
That's just in general, of course.....

eh?
please tell me where!!
Old albums can get re-released in mid price range for around 8-10
pounds. Back catalogue stuff can vary between 12 and 15 pounds. Neq
but non-chart CDs are also around this price (just try finding the
Portishead CD for less that 12 quid).
This is why I use mail order, and rarely for out more than 10.99.
ho hum.
gonna have a total blast on CDs in this weekend. I'm not taking a
change of clothes to Boston, just gonna leave lots of room in the
suitcase for CDs...

| When I was in the Boston area at the beginning of October, I liked
Newbury Comics and Strawberrys shops. There are several of both. Chart
CDs came in at $10-$11 and others at $14-$16, CD singles $6. When
you're in Newbury Comics, you're suddenly confronted with all those US
bands they talk about in radio_radio, Weezer and so on. Dance and
techno stuff has a much lower profile over there, but you can find it.
WFNX plays wall-to-wall indie. There was some no-name radio station on
88.8 (?) which played great hardcore techno late in the evening, a good
soundtrack for midnight driving.
Err, what was the question again?

There are a few small-ish chains of record shops in the Portsmouth/
Southsea area that sell just released chart CD's at 10.99 (like Pearl
Jam's Vitalogy)
The Portishead album is in big demand I understand, most cut-price
places I've been to have been trying to get as many copies as they
can. I managed to get the last copy from Reflex in Southsea for 11.99
today.
