It's been a looooong time since I've been to Glastonbury, due to not
living in England mainly. However, this may all change very soon.
So tell me, what's it like nowadays. I imagine that nowadays there is a
police presence on site? How many people now attend it. (I'm working to
10 years ago when around 40,000 was considered humongous!)
Does it still have all the theatre tents, second stage, film tents etc?
Interested,
Mark.

1203.4 | Bigger & better | WOTVAX::STONEG | Temperature Drop in Downtime Winterland.... | Mon Mar 07 1994 14:44 | 17 |
|
Mark, there is a Police presence yes, but last year it was quite
low-key - no road blocks on the way in or out, and very good 'Community
Style' policing inside, with some plain clothes as well.
last years event had an official limit of 70,000 - people I know who
work at the festival put the count at around 100,000 - 110,000 bearing
in mind the traders, performers, volunteer staff etc that were also on
site that's still a lot more than were supposed to have tickets !
There are now several 'main' stages (pyramid, NME, Jazz, Acoustic, etc),
theatre tents, Comedy tents, Cinema's inside and out and smaller
'venues' such as large Marquees which serve as Cafe/bars with live
bands, jugglers, theatre etc.

1203.5 | I had that Karl Wallinger in the back of my cab.. | WOTVAX::FIDDLERM | The sense of being dulls my mind | Wed Mar 16 1994 13:18 | 13 |
| Peter Gabriel, Bjork, and World Party confirmed for this years fest.
Don't World Party play at every festival anywhere? Their albums don't
seem to sell, turn up in bargain bins frequenntly, yet still turn up at
festivals, on TV, Radio 1 concerts and lord knows what else. I think
there is a conspiracy here. The Wallinger Conspiracy. He has
kidnapped Mike Scott, replaced him with a look-a-like who can't write
songs, then tries to take over the world.
Don't worry - I'm just drinking too much coffee. Even the walls are
talking about me...

I'll stick to the Krishna tent this year.

1203.7 | Man on the 25th | RDGE44::ALEUC1 | Barry Gates, 7830-1155 | Mon Apr 11 1994 13:00 | 8 |
| I was at the Welsh Convention on Saturday. What's that got to do with
music I hear you say....but this was Man and all their spin-off groups
doing an all day concert. They announced that they would be at
Glastonbury on the 25th June this year. If you are there go to see them
as they are on form. Don't miss Deke Leonard and his Gibson doing
"A Ride and a View".

Does anybody have any experience of taking a small child to Glastonbury
(aged 1.5). I know they have a kids field for entertaining them, but are
there any other facilities to make things easier?

1203.10 | 5 weeks and counting ! | WOTVAX::STONEG | Temperature Drop in Downtime Winterland.... | Wed May 18 1994 10:44 | 20 |
|
....all tickets attract at least a 2 quid booking fee whether you get
them by mail order, credit card or whateva. A couple of the crowd I'll
be going with went down to Glastonbury two weeks ago to buy all the
tickets as they usually do, only to find that the record shop in
Glastonbury is also charging the booking fee this year.
For anyone who's interested we'll be there from Wednesday lunchtime,
probably in the camping area opposite where the Jazz stage was last
year as it's the most central. The field we used to camp in is now
performers/Tipi people only - come to think of it perhaps it always was
but last year you had to prove it. Our camp will have the usual
Yin/Yang flag with a couple of aircraft lights attached (so we can find
our way back in the dark!), a GD SYF flag, an upturned trailer and a
big fire in the middle - come along and say hello, but don't expect to
get too much sense out of us....

<sigh> what a rip-off. It's like advertising prices exclusive of VAT, and it
ought to be illegal.

hey! You guys are *organised* I've obviously been thinking too small. Do you
know if there's enough room to land my helicopter?

... let me know how you'd like the heli-pad marked out and I'll see
what I can do. %^)
we have been toying with the idea of taking a laser with us for the
last couple of years, it may even happen this year - so we could guide
you in with that !
And, just in case there's the same cock-up with the car parks this year
- ie, nobody directing traffic on the way out - I'm going down in the
Frontera this year, and I'll be away across the fields &^;

1203.13 | Travel Info Wanted | PAKORA::APEDEN | | Sat Jun 04 1994 01:57 | 13 |
| Could anyone tell me how easy it is to get from Bristol airport to
the festival site. We are flying down to Bristol and should arrive
around 8pm on the Thursday night.
Also are there any off-licences in or about the airport for the weekend
carryout or will we have to get one before we fly.
Any info appreciated.
Cheers
Peeds

1203.14 | 2 tix advertised in NME classifieds BTW | WOTVAX::STONEG | Temperature Drop in Downtime Winterland.... | Wed Jun 08 1994 16:12 | 38 |
|
Peeds, don't know about the transport situation, although they do
usually run buses from train stations etc.
As far as the carry-out goes, there are various off-licences in
Glastonbury itself, and one in Pilton (the nearest village to the
festival). Once you're inside, the Beer/Cider/Lager prices aren't too
bad - although if you can take severalcases of Duty free in with you,
then you will save a lot of money.
I got news last night that the gates open at 9am (on Wednesday) this year
(not 12.00 lunchtime as previously) so our plans have been brought forward
about 8 hours - we're now travelling overnight to arrive before 9am !!
The site now has a double perimeter fence 8-10ft high steel sheets,
with enough space between the two fences to turn a Landrover according to
our contact.
Pass out information has not been given out yet, there will be passouts
but how they will work will not be disclosed until the event.
we've also been told that if there are any problems with the security
staff on the gates (who are employed to do security, nothing more
nothing less) DO NOT make an issue of it - stay nice and calm, go away
from the gate and wait until you spot one of the Site officials (who
are volunteers, there to try and make everything run smoothly) - these
people can be reasoned with and in most cases will come to some
'arrangement' if there is a problem.
Graham.
BTW, Peeds, have you got tickets ?? If not you are going to have *big*
problems with the aforementioned security (if you get that close),
officially, there are no tickets on sale at the gate and there
shouldn't be any still on sale in shops now - but there are -
they supposedly won't let anyone near the place without a ticket.

1203.15 | | WOTVAX::FIDDLERM | The sense of being dulls my mind | Wed Jun 08 1994 16:25 | 16 |
| I've seen a lot of tix still for sale.
Ch 4 are reshowing the 'Showdown at Glastonbury' series. 4 progs about
Michael Eavis, The Festival, the village, and the locals. Its very
interesting. Part 3 is on this friday, at around 2pm.
Ch4 are also going to be broadcasting live from the fest over the
weekend, which means live sets n interviews n stuff, so you can have a
mini festival in your own living room (Virtual Festival?). All you
have to do is drink lots of horrible lager, get a headache, roll around
in the mud, dig a hole in the back yard for a toilet, have sex with any
complete stranger passing by, and you're there!
I suppose you could also pin up a photo of Graham for extra atmosphere.

| oh, you could also get your neighbour to come round and sell you a
packet of talcum powder for a great deal of money, so that you can
sniff it and lie back and say 'Hmm, doesn't do much for me...'. Or
maybe they could sell you some cow dung rolled up with tobacco, so that
you could smoke it and lie back and say 'Hey man, smell those
colours...'

Mike, as you're not going I'll scan you a few selected pictures from
recent years, then while we're in 'a field of our own' you can have your
own mini festival on 'a Workstation of your own' with a few good vibes
playing on your CD at the same time....
Graham
BTW, we're having a trial run of the Laser this w/e ! but I have doubts
whether the Battery will run it for long enough for it to be worth
taking %^/

....There won't be anywhere for the Cows to sleep now %^/
It shouldn't be too difficult to get something else in it's place, but
it really needs to be a pyramid for things to be 'proper'. The original
wasn't too high tech, so I would think it'd be pretty straight forward
to replace. The lighting and sound rigs probably wouldn't have been up
yet - they normally go up at the biginning of next week - unless of
course any of it had already been delivered and stored inside...
