1195.0. "Venue Information" by CSLALL::RAPAGLIA_NM (Where did I go wrong?) Thu Nov 18 1993 12:24

I couldn't find anything about venue information, but if there is
a note on it in here, please feel free to move this note to a more
    appropriate place.

I am trying to find out some information about the Whitley Bay Ice Rink
in New Castle. I was wondering how big of a place it is (how many
people it seats), what the set up is, and if part of this is standing?

    Thanks,

    Nancy

judging by the response to the base note, I probably won't get an
answer to this, but I suppose it's worth a try....

Where is The Borderline in London ?

can tickets be bought in advance, or is it a 'pay at the door' venue ?

how much does it usually cost to get in ?

and finally, what is their phone number ?

    Thanks in advance

    Graham

It's just off Charing Cross Rd., nearest tube is Tottenham Court Rd.
If memory serves me right tickets can be purchased in advance from the
venue or from agencies. It's fairly small, strangely 'shaped', has a
good atmosphere and fairly good bar-service (not too expensive).

Has anyone been to the recently re-opened Shepherd's Bush Empire?
I'm going to see the amazing Fat, Bald, UFO-spotting Frank Black there
on Saturday (17.9.94). A friend in the U.K. got the tickets so I don't
know whether they're seats or standing or what.

Is it all standing/seats/combination, what are the bar(s) like and how
pricey is the beer and slow the service, any good vantage points (I'm a
    short-arse), etc.?

    Steve.

Well in response to my own question (.5) The Shepherd's Bush Empire is
    an extremely agreeable venue.

Smaller than I expected, the stalls is all standing and, I believe, there
are two 'circle' tiers which are seating. Like the 'Grand' in Clapham there
is a long bar towards the rear of the stalls which affords an excellent
view of the stage and gives immediate access to the bar-staff (Fnarr).
Bar prices not too bad (2.10 for Guinness) and the service was pretty
quick despite people staying at the bar drinking because of the view.
There ar two additional bars at either side of the lower level of the
auditorium, again speedy service from here and service continued until
11 pm which was approximately 20 minutes after the end of the set.

The interior is a bit delapidated, but I would rate the place at least
as good as both the Forum (ex-T&C) and the Academy at Brixton. I will
certainly return for Elvis Costello in November.

    Steve.
1195.8Venue Directions?SUBURB::DIVERLFri Oct 07 1994 15:3011

I'm going to the Shepherd's Bush Empire tomorrow night to see
    Radiohead.

I read the description of the venue with interest, but does anyone know
how to get there - i.e. which is the nearest tube and is the place
    easy to find?

    Thanks!

Perhaps I'd better come over to this topic...

Mike? Where're you travelling from? - to Bristol

Down the M4, from Reading areaish. (Hungerford actually, but you get
    the picture).

Don't know if you've travelled West down the M4 before (?), but there's a
massive blue metal bridge over the M4 roundabout junction 19 (?). There's a
turn-off right below it - signposted M32 and probably "Parkway". This takes you
straight onto the M32, which, as I said, goes directly into Bristol city centre.
It couldn't be easier. Mind you, your best bet would be to park in town, then
get a taxi to take you to the Victoria rooms, cuz I don't really know which part
of the Uni they're in. Also, it's a bit tougher giving directions within the
centre, because of all the turnings on the roundabouts.

It's worth a bash, and the taxi fare for a journey from the City centre to the
Uni would only be about 3/4 quid max.

The Empire is near Shepherd's Bush underground station, and is situated
right on Shepherd's Bush Green next to the Bottom Line.

1195.13Found it!SUBURB::DIVERLMon Oct 10 1994 11:3915

    Thanks, Bob.

Managed to find the Empire very easily as it turned out.
I would agree with the previous note that this is an agreeable venue.

The only negative thing I found was that, as it's quite small and this
was a sold out gig, it gets very, very hot in there.
I was sweltering just standing still!

Overall, I would rate this a pretty good place to see a band.
Even the Ladies' loos were ok! (Most unusual!!)

    Leonie.
