1178.0. "The Red House Painters" by RDGENG::CROOK (Wings lifting tired feet) Wed Aug 18 1993 19:15
The Red House Painters are a Californian band with a slow/beautiful/melancholic
sound. They have 2 albums:
"Down Colorful Hill"
" " (no name or, to put it another way, eponymous)
just to be different, "Down Colorful Hill" is the elder album, reputably
put together from a set of demo tracks recorded over a number of years.
I first heard this band on some Ch4 music program and, since they're on 4AD
a small dose of their music was enough to convince me to investigate further.
If you listen to the first album, all the tracks are excellent, but try
"Michael" and "Down Colorful Hill" as an introduction. Not an album to listen to
if you're in a hurry. Rather well recorded, though, so worth turning up loud.
IMO the ('difficult") second album is nowhere near as good (Tracy Chapman
syndrome?)
Anyone else have an opinion on these people?

| Ive got a promo copy of the 'Rollercoaster' album...4AD-l seems to have
decided to call their 3 albums by the cover..so there is 'Bed',
'Rollercoaster' and whatever the new one is. Cant say I particularly
like them, there must be lots of similar bands out there, and they dont
come across as being anything special...remind me a bit of The Triffids
or a poor mans Simon & Garfunkel....still each to our own.
I could live without the Rollercoaster CD if anyone wants to make an
offer....
Cheers
Paul
