1150.0. "Big Country..." by PAKORA::SWRIGHT () Sat May 29 1993 21:41

Big Country are doing a European tour just now with Hugh Cornwell
(Ex Stranglers) as support act , I saw them at the usher hall in
Edinburgh last Monday and they were really good, There new album
is called "The Buffalo Skinners" and is pretty good.

Wasn't too impressed with Old Hugh, wearing a pair of old tracksuit bottoms
and a "Fonz" leather jacket, He did a Excellent version of "Get a Grip"
as his last song but the other Stuff was a bit depressing.

Big country have also released a CD with all the best tracks taken
from there past albums :The Crossing, Peace In our time, etc
its about 8.99 and has about 14 tracks on it.

What does Hugh play for an instrument? Does he sing?

I was listening to an old "The Yachts" LP a while back and one of the
    lyrics mentioned his name.

Are there any survivors out there who recall a video done in the
1985-1986 timeframe titled, "Live in New York? The video, was done
perhaps around the Coney Island area, and featured, primarily the music
from the second LP, "Steeltown". Now, the more difficult query! If
anyone remembers this piece, does anyone know where, or if it may be
available for sale? Thanks for your help, and sage advice.

Kevin,

the video I think you are referring to is called The Seer, Live in New York -
If my memory serves.
The concert was actually played at the naval docks, with thje stage being dwarfed
by a huge aircraft carrier behind it.

The vid has a lot of the tracks from Steeltown, with my particular favourite
being the track Steeltown - absolutely fab.

Dont know where you could buy a copy now though - try Tower records, and
order it .

If you need any more advice mail me on AYRMIS::WARREN (dtn 7823-4096)

My all time favorite is "Where the rose is sown" from the Steeltown
LP, The pictures on that Album were taken at Grangemouth BP Oil refinery
    just incase anyone wondered......

Steve/anyone

You got both the soundtracks from the film Restless Natives ??
They were both on the b-side of 2 12" singles, but I only ever got the first disk.
The music is absolutely brill !

IMO, after the album the seer, they went too commercial, and lost a lot of their
wonderful guitar and drum solos, rythms, etc etc.

I think the worst album ever must be "No place like Home" Pure Kack..!!
Well apart from the track "Ships" maybe...!!

The acoustic set last night was excellent..... they played stuff like
Chance,Winter Skies, Kansas, The storm, One great thing, etc

They did "Living in the Free World" and "Don't fear the reaper"
for there encore and made a good job of both songs...
    Good night had by all.....!!

I was there and thought it highly entertaining too(apart from the git
who tried to be humerous with the band)I think the band threw a lot of
people when they played "don't fear the reaper",only a few knew it was
    a cover version.

I hope you've all invested in the new live album and video as it's the
best stuff they've ever done , especially the acoustic set. A great
concert to have been at.Anybody else there at new year.
