1140.0. "Suede" by WELCLU::GREENB (I'm sick of parking cars.) Fri Apr 16 1993 10:49

Are they as good as the hype suggests? Discuss....

No I'm afraid they don't quite live up to the hype. The live performances are
very good ( although I haven't seen them for 8 months) almost coming close to
the dizzy heights of a RIDE gig. The LP is one of the better this year but I
have a feeling that they wont save the world and that the music press are
going to fall out with Brett Anderson before too long. Half the tracks are great
but the other half seem to be the band just going through the motions.
 The Suede backlash starts now!!

Paul.

    Bob,

I was going to start a Suede topic up today but you beat me to it:-)

I have to admit to buying all there singles and there debut album and I
like it all. I brought the first record "The Drowners" simply out of
curiosity. It is a good song and worth buying. I love the way that
Brett Anderson sings. It suits there music.

Melody Maker are the worse at hyping them but musically I think they
are as good as the hype suggests. I don't however like the way people
are comparing them to The Smiths all the time.

There album is number 1 in the album chart at the moment.

Presumably it was the latter half you were playing in your car the
other day! A second rate David Bowie soundalike playing 3rd rate
songs...

I bought the album yesterday having heard only one of the singles
(Animal Nitrate) and one other song, Sleeping Pills, before. I have
also been following the hype in the Maker for the last year, but
leaving all that aside I must say the album is really pretty damn good,
especially the slower songs like Sleeping Pills, Pantomime Horse and my
current fave Breakdown. Mind you, they can give it some welly quite
convincingly too (Drowners, Metal Mickey etc).

I do find it refreshing that a band can pull off several slow and moody
numbers with such confidence on their debut rather than going for
    all-out grungerama.

So, basically, I like them a lot, although they maybe don't deserve all
    the hype they've been getting.

Been a bit vague about Suede, but I heard a brilliant track on the
radio last night. Its from a new compilation lp, which I cant remember
the name of, but its in aid of some Anti Facist stuff. The track was
either called Big Time, or Into the City, not sure which. Its a slow
moody kind of thing, and I loved it so much I wanted t jump up and down
    and shout SPLING.

1140.6London Suede ?!?!?!AIMHI::RICHARDS.F.W.Wed Jun 29 1994 01:4410
Does anybody out there know of any new material from these guys? A
couple of months ago a limited edition (supposedly) EP of "Stay
Together" was released. It had 2 versions of "Stay Together" and 4
other tracks. Any news of a full length release?

BTW, in the USA they will now be known as The London Suede. Apparently
there was a nightclub act in Seattle that went by the name Suede.

New material is forthcoming (apparently). According to todays NME and
MM Bernard Butler has walked out on the band, whilst recoding. The
record company and their publicicsts are denying it.

apparently an "aggreed statement between bernard and the Band will be
    issued later this week".

    Wonder what will happen.

Heard on the radio last night - the official statement is that Bernard
left the band after disagreements about the production on the new lp.
The band won't be splitting up, and the lp will come out in October.
Ddidn't Bernard write most of the tunes though?

The implication in the papers is that Bernard is the talent in Suede,
and that he has to coax Brett through most of it.

Oh well another extreemly hiped band hit the dust.

I don't know if that was deliberate, but its a good pun!

Naa was'nt deliberate, just me trying to type at mach 3 when my fingers
and brain can only cope with mach 2 :-).

I can remember my fience (sp ?) going to see Suede the day after we
started going out (I *think* it was the 23rd Feb at the Pyramids centre
    in Portsmouth).

She enjoyed them, although she did say the were quieter than the god
Machine (who were so loud that she threw up !).

Heard the ex-guitarist blubbing on the Evening Session last night. Saying
-boo hoo- I did all the work -sniff- they hate me -cry- I hat them -whimper-.

What a complete to***r. Not surprised they dumped him.

He did sound like something of a tortured artist, but the one track I
heard by him (and some other geezer) was good - a bit "Princey".

This track wouldn't be a duet with MacAlmont, would it? That bloke is so camp
it almost pains me to watch him on the Telly. At least Jarvis has an amusing
dance, and Brett has err....well....yeah, maybe not.
