| Me being a pop kid love Even As We Speak! Don't have much of their stuff though.
Just the odd track or 5 on various Sarah compilations and some tapes the late
great Christophe prepared for me.
St. Etienne were better as the Field Mice!

And as for that quip about St. Etienne, go to your room.

| I never knew The Field Mice are ST Etienne! I just got the latest St
Etieene lp (yesterday). Haven't listened yet tho.
Out of touch.
For jangly pop kids - Frank n Walters just re-released 'Fashion crisis
in New York'.

| Stanley & Wiggs are from the Mice. "Let's Kiss and Make Up" one the first album
is a Field Mice song.

Mark Goodier is broadcasting an Even As We Speak session all this week.
They took their usual eclecticism a bit further last night by adding a
weird dub intro and outro to "Falling". As MG himself said, it's a pity
this wasn't released as a single from the album, because it could have
been a hit.

I've now lent the album to two independent assessors, one of whom
enjoyed it a lot, and the other of whom thought it was brilliant. So,
either I chose the victims carefully, or this really is an excellent
indie-pop record.

Neal Crook and I went to see EAWS in Reading last night - a major gig
at the Rising Sun Institute to an audience of, well, at least 20-30
(people who have been to the Rising Sun will know that this is pretty
much a full house). It transpired that they were doing this simple
accoustic set as a bit of fun, and as a break from their real stage
show. It was an enjoyable evening, and I feel somewhat lucky to have
seen it, since we only went as a result of Neal having seen a
fly-poster on Saturday.

| .. as an example of the High Technology rampant at the aforementioned
event:
- a galvanised steel mop-bucket and a couple of large pickle jars
filled with water. Microphone on boon poised above bucket. Water poured
from jars into bucket. This formed the sound effects for 'squid'
- a cheap sony portable on a stool with a mike pointed at its speaker,
playing a rap/percussion backing track.
- members of the band drinking from a bottle of wine turned out to be a
scientific 'tuning' exercise. Bottle was subsequently tapped with a knife
to form sound effects for 'Zeppelins'.
Trevor and I also chatted with an unnamed member of the band who told us the
background behind 'is the factory loud now or is that the water heater?'
good fun! This shows that boarded-up shops in Reading perform a valuable
public service in acting as an advertising surface
Neal.
BTW: EawS recording another Peel session for broadcast in ?August.

| It can't be true... EAWS world celebrities?
Could this be the same band that used to play at the Landsowne, around
the corner from my friend's place in Sydney's sunny Chippendale?
The same EAWS that could barely fill the legendary (but small)
Sandringham on a quiet night.
I wondered where they had got to.
Not that I'm being a smartarse; I really liked they. They were around
when the band scene in Sydney was much healthier. I saw them support Ed
Kuepper in about 1988 (Ed is now "big" over there, I am led to believe)
and it was murky, muddy but very nice. Looking back, a bit like My
Bloody Valentine without the howitzers and Boeing engines.
Oh, and I have a copy of an early single (original pressing) called "Goes
so slow" if anyone would like a tape.
Ridiculously large offers will also be considered (Everton FC, you
could be mine all mine all mine).
Happy whatsits
Peter
