1098.0. "The Auteurs" by WELCLU::GREENB (Lovers of Today) Tue Jan 05 1993 16:12

More from the cultural wasteland of Welwyn. Honestly, I'm right out of
touch here - my only contact with hip new sounds is months-old copies
of the Melody Maker and occasional forays into GLR-land on a Sunday
    afternoon. Anyway.....

Just before Christmas, I heard a song called 'Showgirl' by the Auteurs,
and I thought it was really jolly blummen good. Does anyone know
anything about them, whether they have an lp out, or anything?

    Yours, culturally blighted etc.,

    Bob

The album (New Wave) came out about a week ago - I got it as soon as my
local Our Price became aware of it i.e. last weekend. If you need
something fresh-sounding, well put together, an antidote to all this
grunge stuff etc, this is the one for you. Recommended - buy it now
    before Luke is a star.

Could someone enlighten me as to what kind of music this is? Who do
    they sound like? (if anyone)

    Looking for good new stuff,

I re-listened to their track on V5 last night, in order to get
precisely this information for myself, but I found it so eminently
forgettable that I can no longer remember what it was like to describe
    it for you !

    Sorry.

It's not easy to define, really - however, I'd say that if you like
things like Belly or Lemonheads you would probably like this too,
although it is more 'English' sounding.

Someone kindly sent me a tape of V5. I know that the Auteurs track is side
B, it's listed there, but I can never find it no matter how hard I try.
I must forget it before the sound reaches my brain. So I read all the NME
praise of the Auteurs with some scepticism. Mind you, Suede ARE good.

Over the weekend, they were being plugged on MTV. Obviously, their
promoters have decided they will be big.

From a personal point of view, I thought it was listenable but I can't
say I would rush out hot-foot to add their stuff to my collection on
the strength of the stuff I have heard so far.

    Cheers,

    Mark.
