1090.0. "It's just the same old thing (on my radio)" by WELCLU::GREENB (Lovers of Today) Thu Dec 03 1992 16:19

Hello, noters in Radio-land, I wonder if anyone can help me. As an
engineers working out of Welwyn, I spend quite a lot of time driving
around the London/Herts/Bucks area with the radio on. Recently I have
been listening to GLR quite a bit, but they are starting to get a bit
middle of the road for me, plus they fall in the same trap as
not-so-wonderful radio 1, that of playing the same few records over and
over again. I would listen to Capital but for the hysterical (not as in
    funny) disc jockeys.

What I need is recommendations for any half-way decent/listenable radio
    station.

What I don't want to hear: Dire Straits, Genesis, Shakespears S*dding
Sister, 'dance' music, Bryan Blummen Adams, Beatiful South, Tasmin
    Flippen Archer etc etc etc.

What I'd love to hear (to expose myself to new music more): Suede,
Ministry, Afghan Whigs, Pavement etc - you know, all the 'hot new'
bands you read about in the press but can't afford to buy their records
    on spec.

What I'd settle for: difficult one this, but somewhere between the two
above, kind of pop without the pap (through the ages) I suppose.

is there any chance of me finding a radio station that plays less than
    80-90% crap all the time?

Give up Bob. The only good stuff on the radio is the static. Oh, and that
station that changes pitch as your press the accelerator.

BTW, if you want to hear Pavement, they're playing Reading TUC this Sunday.

Babs,

Radio Phardle... especially good if you are near the planet Zog.

Hope this helps,

Stuart

Carter would fit into my category 3, Jet, i.e. stuff I would certainly
like to hear, rather than category 2, which is stuff I would like to
hear but know I have no chance of hearing during the day.

There are one or two shows I quite like, f'rinstance some of what Gary
Crowley plays on a Sunday afternoon, and Out On Blue Six when I
remember to listen to it, but basically I think Lee's analysis of
    daytime radio is about right.

Unfortunately, you have to go the USA to get any sort of variety of
choice of radio stations. In almost any major US city, you can find a
choice of talk, classical, Top 40, oldies, rock etc. This does mean
that you are unlikely to be introduced to a new genre by just listening
to one station, however. When I was in Atlanta the last time, there was
one that had the lengthy tag-line of "All the Great Hits of the 1980s,
but without the Rap and Heavy Rock" !

You can quite often find a rock station that specialises in what they
call "alternative", which goes from Elvis Costello and the Cure up to
some of the more modern British and US independent stuff. If you're
ever in the Boston area, WFNX is a good example of this kind of
station, and there's a similar one in LA, KROC.

The station you want is Couleur 3. I have a card that lists all its
frequencies in the Lac Leman area. It says nothing about the M25 however.

Ah yes, I wondered if any of these stations had transmitters powerful
enough to reach the M40 between Uxbridge and Wycombe.

    Bob

p.s. whatever happened to the 'High' in Wycombe?

    Trevor:

It's KROQ, not KROC. You forgot to mention all the college stations
across the country that play anything they want sans commercials. The
best LA one is KXLU 88.9, if you happen to be in the area.

I had heard about college radio stations, but can you receive them at a
reasonable distance from the source (e.g, driving around) ? The
similar types of station in this country can only be received within a
few hundred metres of the transmitter.

    Trevor

p.s., an earlier note mentioned Gary Crowley on GLR. I won a
competition on that show yesterday ! It was for a copy of the CD, which
I can't remember the name of, on which various American bands play
    old-time punk smashes.

    >I had heard about college radio stations, but can you receive them at

Yes, especially in a place like LA where colleges are spread out
throughout the county (unlike Boston where they're all squished within
a few miles from each other.) KXLU (located at LMU near the airport) can
be heard throughout LA (400 squ. miles).

Is this still true ? I heard that the TUC (Trade Union Club?)
have lost their music license for being too noisy.
