1056.10 | A quick personal view of the Festival | CHEFS::STRATFORDS | Steer clear of the Zebra Bros | Tue Aug 29 1995 10:01 | 34 |
|
Set (nearly) worth the ticket price alone: Electrafixion
Good sets: Stereolab (except for the dickhead who jumped on stage
expecting to forcibly removed with 30 seconds
and finding he was left alone until the end of
the song & that he couldn't dance due to him
having the co-ordination of a Thunderbirds puppet
whose strings had been cut)
Eddie Izzard
Phil Jupitus
Paul Weller
Teenage Fanclub
Some band in the Carlsberg tent on Friday afternoon who I
never did find out who they were
Not much cop: Beck
Boo Radleys
Dire: Marion
Hole
Most Ridiculous Comment of Festival:
Comedian Ian Stone (I think) after 3 minutes of a hour set
and no laughs
"Does anybody want me to f*** off then?" Huge roar of approval
"Does anyone want me to f*** on then?" Silence
He introduced the next act within 30 seconds
Winner of the award for inducing "Edwards Syndrome": Bjork - awful.

| Stuart, with respect boyo, "b*!!*cks".
After missing Friday, I staggered my way through 13 hours of Saturday, and
about 11 of Sunday. Here's my view on the bands I saw, excluding all drug and
drink references.
Bloody Marvellous
=================
Neil Young
I managed to get pretty close to the stage for this set, but wasn't too keen on
being squashed up to a very tall chap who hadn't washed for weeks. Therefore,
about 3 numbers from the end of the set (which included a few numbers from
Mirrorball, and the pick from his previous elpees), I made my way back to the
rather huge fire someone had lit near the sound/lights desk in the middle of
the field. From here, I was able to enjoy an absolutely sublime rendition of
my personal NY favourite; Cortez the killer. After bringing this epic to a
close, an encore was called for (obviously), and Neil came back on stage with
Pearl Jam to play "Rocking in the free world". This was a rousing closer which
had the effect of bringing me out of the coma I entered during the heavenly
relaxed "Cortez". Stone Gossard attempted to set fire to his guitar, smashed
it into the amps, and chucked it into the crowd not a million miles away from
where I'd been standing. bugger. Absolutely superb though.
Shed Seven
This lot appeared to be fairly popular with the crowd, and zipped through the
highlights of "Changegiver" as well as playing at least 3 new songs (including
the last single "Where have you been tonight?"). They hardly put a foot wrong,
and were definitely one of my favourite turns of the weekend.
Ash
Despite being crammed into the back of a dangerously cramped MM tent, I
managed to get a fairly good view of the kiddies from N.Ire. They played most
of "Trailer", and started a pretty huge party when they launched into "Girl
from mars", "Uncle Pat" and "Jack named the planets". A super performance,
enhanced by the idiot who escaped the clutches of the stewards and legged it up
the central pole of the tent, and proceeded to hang off it like a chimp.
Nearly got killed in the crush getting out of the tent, but that's another
story.
Paul Weller
Far better than I'd expected, even though he didn't appear to want to be there.
Played stuff from Stanley road and Wild Wood, but not "uh-huh oh yeah", which
disappointed me.
Other Goodies
=============
Bjork (despite what ::STRATFORDS says!)
Buffalo Tom
Paw
Skunk Anansie - Whoa! Scary bird!
Corduroy
James Hall - and his trumpet...
Shaun Meo - Comedian; very funny indeed.
Jeff Green - Comedian; very funny indeed.
Quite honestly, I can't really remember many of the others, but I worked out
that we saw over 20 acts (including 5 "comedians") over the 2 days.
Others I can just about remember seeing;
========================================
Vent - Miles Hunt and co.
Soundgarden - mediocre
Boo Radleys - not bad, but not brilliant. Lazarus was good.
Absolute tosh
=============
Heavy Stereo - crap. Proved that the inkies are frequently wrong.
Hattie Hayridge - amusing as "Holly" in RD, but an unfunny trout as a
comedienne.
Dub war - complete tosh. Absolutely rubbish. "Stop shouting at me!" - m.
The b*stard who heckled Neil Young between songs by shouting unintelligible
rubbish in an Essex accent.

Blimey, was Damon from Blur there then?

PS Buffalo Tom were good. Forgot about them.

1056.13 | Echo and the Grungymen | YUPPY::ASHLEYSMITH | knackered knee | Tue Aug 29 1995 14:15 | 6 |
| Stuart,
re Electrafixion. I liked the single 'Zephyr', read somewhere that they
sound like the Bunnymen meets Grunge, live. Is this accurate?

1056.14 | | CHEFS::STRATFORDS | Steer clear of the Zebra Bros | Tue Aug 29 1995 14:19 | 11 |
| Andy,
There were some tracks that were leaning towards grunge (but only
because some of them were swathed in feedback) but in the main, they
were hard & fast tunes. As for being like E & TB, only in the vocals.
Which is hardly surprising. Mac the mouth was surprisingly quiet
inbetween songs, drinking beer and smoking rather than introducing the
songs but one assumes that they will appear on the elpee due out in the
next couple of weeks.
