| First answer comes from me.
The Levellers are nothing but a bunch of arty people who oncce read NME
and thought hey that Image looks good lets manufacutre ourselves ito
that sort of purile twoddle.
Nigel ( who isn't saying that purile twoddle is bad, but really does
think that this whole indie scene is getting boring - why don't they
just admit that they are in the record industry, and want to sell
loads of records)

| Since when have the Levellers been representative of 'the indie scene',
whatever that is?
At least independant labels have some vague interest in the music they
are selling, which most major labels can't claim.
Also, the Levellers have been around for a long time, and have only
recently found some sort of fame. They must have some belief in what
they are doing, beyond image, to stick at it for that long.

If the Levellers once read NME then it must have been a long time ago.
They've been around for a hell of a time with the same approach,
attitudes, etc... without being fashionable. Just 'cause they have
finally had some commercial success doesn't mean that they have
manufactured their image.

| I've liked The Levellers since I heard the Outside/Inside single on the
radio in 89'.
When I first went to see The Levellers play their were a lot of crusty
people their and the atmosphere was brilliant. Now it's not the same
with all the university student twats and the Indie kids.
The Levellers also have important messages in their lyrics. Not like
Ride who repeat 'Leave them all behind" about 100 times.
Their most recent song reached number 14 and was called 15 years.
At Glastonbury they played a blinder which I'll never will forget. They
are now against festivals like Glastonbury and Reading because they
cost too much money too get in. This was very evident in the
performance with their sarcastic comments about the organisers.
They opened the performance with GAME and went through the usual
numbers and performed the classic One Way. They closed with Devil went
down to Georgia which is a good live song. I would have been happier
if they could have crambed WHAT YOU KNOW in their at the end, but it
was a brilliant performance.
Cheers

Well, you know what they say about fools and angels. Besides which, a
good fume always helps shift those rainy day blues :-) Oh Lord I've got
the rainy day blues...

I know this a bit late in the NOTE, but I am relatively new to this
thing so I hope somebody is going to read it, even if it is 3 years
time!!!!!!
Well I first discovered The Levellers while I was entertainments
secretary at the Southampton Institute Students Union. I know one of
them Students, but not a rebellious one.
They sent me a demo tape (which I still have and listen too quite a
bit)
Although the students at the college were going through hard times and
a bit strapped for cash, a fair few turned up. Back in 1987 or was
1988.
They put on a blinder of a gig in a little seady hall (Which I called
home for 3 years). They obviously had some serious things to say in
their lyrics, and played unpredentiously. The feeling I got was that
they were a group of people out to put across a message and have a good
time. Which they did. They have not manufactured their success, it is a
by-product of there skill in playing and lyric writing. They obviously
say what people are wanting to hear.
Anyway to finish off I will just add that fame has no way gone to their
heads, they still play little seady pubs and put on one hell of a gig.
If only more bands could be as easy going and relistic life would be a
dream.

I've got the Levelling The Land CD, and Belaruse, what are
the others? And are they as good as those 2. Waite I will swap early
tapes of theirs for the Aussie equivalent bands.

I take it that by 'Belaruse' you mean the album which is titled 'Levellers'.
Belaruse is one of the tracks on that album (in the UK at least). The other
album is called 'A Weapon Called The Word'.
