Not an answer....
I didn't realize Flying Nun had been around so long (or have they?),
I recenlty saw a reference to a 60's compilation of NZ bands but of
course that doesn't imply that the label has been around that long.

| Flying Nun have been around since early 80's. The first record they put
out was The Cleans's "Boodle Boodle Boodle" EP, 81 or 82 I think?
I recall the 60's compilation, it would not have been a Flying Nun
release. There are now quite a few other independent labels in NZ,
Pagan Records is the other "big" independent and then there are a host
of little labels like Expressway in Dunedin who record bands like The
Dead C, Plagal Grind, Peter Gutteridge etc.

It must have been typed in error then, the ad I saw for the 60's
compilation said the label was Flying Nun...
Those of you in the Boston area the In Your Ear store, the one
on Commonwealth Ave. (I forget the adress - they moved across
the steet, near the Paradise and Store 24) has a plentiful
selection of NZ singles (vinyl) if you're so inclined.

| Have you heard a group called Circle - they are freinds of a friend and
I have tapes of them live and demos and quite like them.
stuart.

Didn't Circle sing "Red Rubber Ball" in the late 60's?

| No not the same Circle - this band have been going for just a few
years.

| Besides, the 60s group was the Cyrkle.

Just to round off the trivia rat-hole. Red Rubber Ball, originally
recorded by the Seekers but written by Bruce Woodley (of Seekers) and
no less than Paul Simon. They also collaborated on another Seekers LP
track called "I wish you could be here".

1021.9 | A music shortage in London... Oh yes! | BASLL1::AMOOREM | | Sat Oct 09 1993 19:11 | 13 |
| By now Mr Begley has probably been around long enuff to find his fix
but ... when I first walked into Rough Trade's shop in Portobello Road
(3 years ago now) they had some rather tasty sounds on the player. When
I asked what it was I was told it was the Bats [& I thought I knew my
Kiwi music]. I suspect that RT have retrenched back to Neals Yard or
something but amn't sure.
As an aside I visited with my brother in Zurich last month & was
treated to a rather tasty Headless Chickens EP 'Donde Esta La Pollo?'
at top vol down the autobahn - heartily recommended.

| I discovered Rough Trade a while ago, they do have quite a good supply
of Kiwi imports but rather expensive so nowadays I tend to send off
direct to Flying Nun for a survival package every now and then. Even
with airmail postage costs it still tends to work out at about 9 quid
per CD which is better than buying locally.
Headless Chickens last album 'Body Blow' features that chicken track
you mentioned, they've moved too far to the dance side of things for my
liking, I preferred them when they first started.
Just got the new Straitjacket Fits album 'Blow' from a friend who
arrived from the US, all Flying Nun and other NZ labels are readily
available in the US.

| At latest count there are now 5 versions of "Donde" floating around.
Having been a big fan since they played in Sydney in 1989, I'd have to
say that I think there current sound is a reflection of the stuff they
always played live. Anyway, the singles (CD) usually have a musical
range - viz "Juice" with "Choppers" (oh, that helibator mix, it makes
me move in strange ways).
And yes, Stunt Clown, there first, is a cracker.
Straitjacket Fits are playing The Big Day Out in late january; I'l post
a review if you like... in fact, I'll do that for any NZ band I see (we
obviously see most of them a bit more than most of the planet).
It's a Flying Nun world.

| Speaking of Straitjacket Fits BBC1 played a tune off the new album in
the 'Red Hot & ....' series (the name eludes me) that seemed to be a
cover of 'Joed Out'. Are they famous now then?

| Mike
that's what I call the big time!
But seriously, there's a new single out here (Sydney) this week.. I
hope it's better than the 'Blow' album, which I found quite
disappointing. I'll get it and give you all a review. As long as the
bushfires don't melt the vinyl!
