| The world is full of up and coming new bands, most of whom won't make
it. Still... Revolver put out a great first single 'Heaven sent an
Angel' last year. thier second single wasn't so hot tho.

I don't think Mike F. was putting them down, he was was just stating
what is very often true...
...Not everyone can be on the cover of Spin, NME, Melody Maker, etc.
In regards to Rollins, see note #640...in RADIO_RADIO, Black Flag,
etc. I think there's the latest album _The End of Silence_ plus one
or two others, not counting Black Flag stuff of course.
One thing I notice is many bands seem to get pushed aside so quickly
before ever getting much of a chance to be new and heard by many
listeners - even if they get a few songs on radio - I guess it
simply has to do with the number of bands out there, the window of
what's new seems seems to close quickly.
Levitation - if memory isn't too faded, Terry Bickers fronts them.
Levitation also have a domestic releases in the states - hope they tour
soon - I've also seen one other single that I've yet to pick up.
I don't know what else exists besides this...
Coppelia CD
Coterie LP
Squirrel / It's Time - Rough Trade singles club
World Around 12
The bands listed below are nothing more than a quick and I do mean
quick run through of some bands who I think might be of interest
to the masses in general - at least more so than the bands I left
off the list.
I also tried to list some bands who have had some press so the names
should be recognizable even if you have not heard their music. Some
primarily locals bands have had international tours.
I wanted to say a quick bit about each but time not permitting and
even still it's probably wouldn't be all that useful!.

Low Life - sound like the Smiths
Swede (not sure of the sp, but are supposed to be the this week's
British press darlings and the next Smiths -- yet another one.)

Ed,
In regards to the Pylons, yes, of course they're not up and coming
but I missed the point I had hoped to include in my earlier haste -
I got reminded of it after typing in the 10+ year discography for
the Mekons over in RAD_RAD. I think it's great that some people are
just now hearing them for the first time. Even if you keep up with
all this stuff I'm sure all of us would still find bands that we have
overlooked or simply never ran across in our travels. I think I have
many meanings for new that's why I don't give it all that much thought
as is some what obvious...

| The correct spelling is suede - I think - there's an interwiew in the
NME I'll read it tonight and see if there's any interesting info.
I didn't see anything special in their new single - seem very ordinary
but each to his, sorry and her, own,

Yeah, I realized I spelled it wrong later. I haven't actually heard
anything by them, so I'd like to know what they sound like. If it's
just "ordinary," the what's the hype about?

| Maybe I am not the one to comment - I've only heard their new single
but I think it sounded like a hundred other normal guitar bands with
nothing heavy and no bite - with all the hype I may eat my words but
as I say - very normal - p.s. the interview I read just ranted and
raved but didn't actually say much at all.

It's because they're ordinary that they need to be hyped, if they were
out-of-the-ordinary then the publicity would be justified. No? (Speaking
purely theoretically, I haven't heard this band Swede, Norwegian, whatever
they're called.)

1013.17 | Lowlife | MIACT::RANKINE | | Tue May 12 1992 14:43 | 10 |
| Re a few ago
Lowlife have been around for some time..Will heggie used to be the bass
player in the Cocteau Twins. I quite like them, the music is very
good, a bit 'layered' like the twins. The vocals are, however a bit
'samey' and this tends to make the tracks sound alike. They have
released at least 3 LP's, so I wouldnt class them a 'new'.

Well, maybe new in the US. And certainly new to me, which is all that
really counts.
Thanks for the info. I'll start looking for their records.

1013.19 | No title. Couldn't think of one. Sorry. | JUMBLY::BURGESS | Strawberry Fields Forever | Thu May 21 1992 01:13 | 19 |
| I saw a band a couple of weeks ago called TABITHA ZU.
Ones to watch. The girl singer/guitarist who will be their main
media grabbing asset (not that they'll NEED it) happens to be
the sister of Daisy Chainsaws Katie thingy Garside. This has already
aided them in an NME review. It's not what you know...
SULTANS OF PING FC seem to be getting a lot of press, and selling
a good quantity of records. I'd be interested to actually hear them.
BOWLFISH have an interesting guitarist. Quite young and songs are
still a bit shallow. But intreguing band. 3 piece.
I'm biased, but you've got to look and listen out for TROUSERSHOCK BC.
Currently negotiating distribution for debut 45 "(You're) all the room
that I'll ever need" which is on Give It Stick Records. Now.
Haven't heard 'em myself, yet, but I have it good authority
that SUEDE are OK.

Personal opinion - obviously, but I have heard the Sultans single
"Where's Me Jumper" and should have put it in the "worst single and
band" but is it a "serious" record - you have to laugh.
Suede - don't see anything new and the more I hear it the less I like
it - very dated and boring.
Like "Motorcycle Emptiness" by the Manics - excellent song.

1013.21 | The Sultans of Ping, my impressions | UPROAR::WEBSTERM | Ready for action | Wed May 27 1992 15:01 | 9 |
| RE The Sultans of Ping.
Saw them last weekend, first time. I was quite impressed with the music
and thought there was a great sense of fun in their act. The lead
singer was wearing a Cramps T shirt. He acted a bit like Lux-interior
and a bit like M Jagger on stage. The music was fast, Cramps like
without the rock-a-billy. Well worth a viewing.

| TABITHA ZU -- single recently s.o.t.w. in NME.
BOWLFISH -- as above. Current flavour. Did you see the pic of Foods
Andy Ross wearing a BOWLFISH t-shirt in that piece about indie in the
NME recently? Apparantly, they are not about to be signed to the label!
While we're talking of Food, it would appear that SENSITIZE are no
longer on that labels roster. Reports say neither party are unhappy
about it...
WONKY ALICE -- getting their share of press, as well at the moment.
Saw them recently in Aldershot (TROUSERSHOCK BC were support). They
were OK, but never wonky. Good guitar. 70's, progressive hints (ie,
changes of tempo, etc.)
Terry.
