993.0. "Kinks" by COMICS::LANG (Your metaphors are murder) Tue Mar 17 1992 14:37

    Well....

Since nobody has much about the Kinks, I thought it about time -
(especially since I was listening to some of their records last night).

I don't want to start going through a complete discography, but was
really wondering if there were any other folks who appreciated Ray
Davies songwriting. And before moving onto the subject matter in-hand,
I should stress that I'll be referring to the period between 1967'ish
to approximately 1978. (In my opinion, they went downhill from that
    period to the present)

I'd reckon that their finest stuff would be culled from the following:

    "Village Green Preservation Society"
"Arthur ..or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire"
"Lola Vs Powerman and the Money-go-round"
    "Muswell Hillbillies"
    "Everybody's in Showbiz"
    "Soap Opera"
    "Something Else"
    "Schoolboys in Disgrace"
    "Sleepwalker"
    "Preservation Acts 1 & 2)

Anybody else heard any of the above and like to comment?

I could prattle on for ages re the above, but I'll save you the hassle
    of reading that!

Davies is IMHO a great songwriter; thats what I reckon after listening
to some of the material above.
As far as I can remember, these LPs weren't received that well at the time
    (can anybody verify this?).

Also, at the time it was released, I seem to remember Preservation
getting panned by the press; and also, (finally)..does anybody remember
Davies appearing in a BBC1 Play for Today called the "24 Piano
    Player" (I think!)

    Cheers

    Harv

The Kinks just won't go away.

They even have a new ingle being played over here in the U.S.,
something about being lazy in the Summertime and having other
nations beat you because of it.

I must say that I still do like Waterloo Sunset, Tired of Waiting for You,
Shangri-La, Autumn Almanac...many of those tunes of yesteryear still
have a place in my musical heart. Charming little pieces of
"British invasion" pop, or musings on just staying home in front of the
telly, and being thrilled at the prospect of a roast beef on Sunday.

However, during the years 1966-69, the Kinks played the Vaudevillian
trump card, complete with cane, straw hat, and a face in the
booze bottle, far too often for comfort. Maybe Ray shoulda been an
    actor, or something.

So, it's enjoyable to listen to a song here and there, especially
for an American like me with lower middle class roots who can
appreciate the fact that people everywhere get dumped on by the
upper classes. Never more than one or two albums over the course
of a night, though, and never two days (or even two weeks) straight.

Somewhere in april the Kinks and a dozen other 60's greats are to give a
golden-oldie concert in Den-Bosch in the "Houtrust hallen" arena in
    The Netherlands.

Thought you might wanna know, details maybe later.

    Thanks for that info Jan.

However.....its exactly this sort of stuff that I think the Kinks are
most remembered for (the sixties hits etc). "You Really Got Me" et al
were/are great pop songs...but I think its unfair that the Kinks are
just associated with that and no more ...eg: the albums that I listed
    in the base note.

Well I s'pose it's not far from Germany, where all those dinosaur bands
    seem to go to die.

Jan, where can I get a list of gigs in Amsterdam (I'm in Belgium)?

To answer some points raised in the base note...

The Kinks hey day was really '64-'69 approx when most of their big hits
occurred. They did go out of favour after about '71. I would say Lola
was their swansong from memory. I never really listened to them post
'71 (like most people) but looking back on their stuff now, they
certainly did some great stuff in the 70s. Perhaps they were ahead of
their time? Maybe it was the popularisation of blues and hard rock that
    put them out of favour?

Only two weeks ago I bought a CD of KINKS Greatest Hits. Great stuff.

The CD "single" in the US actually has 5 songs on it. The single is
called "Did Ya". I like it...

Also, the Kinks are playing in a concert for "Earth Day" here in
    Massachusetts in April.

I certainly think that their venture into the American market signalled
their demise (This would be circa 1976/77 when Low Budget and Misfits
were released). Nowadays, I wouldn't even think about buying any new
Kinks stuff, but I reckon Ray Davies has been vastly underrated by
    many people.
