I've just heard Maura O'Connell tapes, and think they're great. Went looking for other Irish female vocalists of the 90s with that kind of sound. Found a Mary Black tape which I also think is very good. Any folks over across the Atlantic (I'm in Maynard) know of other Irish singers with a similar sound?

Article on Mary Black in Tuesday's Guardian. Did you know:- That of Irish artists, only U2 outsell her in Ireland. Her latest album "Babes in the Wood" has received rave reviews, and she is re-releasing her 5 previous albums in the UK. She is starting to make in-roads into US and Japan. She is 36, married, with three children. This article suggested she provoked a rare passion amongst Irish audiences. | |||||

I bought "Mary Black",her first solo album, about 7 years ago.It was absolutely amazing, covering a whole range of musical styles. The instrumentation was sparse but brilliant. As is often the case with a "new" artiste,I didn't enjoy more recent albums as much.I also read in a Scottish newspaper's entertainment section that she is considered"an up-and-coming young singer" !!! Not bad for a 36 year old mother of three!!! |
