871.0. "Rockstars" by JUMBLY::OCONNOR (Raggle Taggle: Nein Danke!!) Mon Jul 22 1991 16:12

The following excerpts are the views of the late rock critic Lester
Bangs vis-a-vis "rockstars" and the accompanying glorification of them.
I think that what he says is even more true today, 20 years after it
    was written.

It's taken from a piece written in December 1970 in "Creem" magazine
and is now in a book of selected rock writings called "Psychotic
Reactions and Carburetor Dung" (6.99). The piece was written in praise
of Iggy Pop and The Stooges.

"Of Pop and Pies and Fun"
     ***********************

"...because the top rockers have a mythic aura around them, the
"superstar", and that's basically an unhealthy state of things, in fact
it's the very virus that's ____ing up rock...and which the Stooges
oppose...maybe in some attempt to free us from lifestyles in which
people often lacking half the talent or personality or charisma of you
or I are elevated into godlike positions. Pure pomp and circumstance.

"The Stooges have a kind of courage but few other performers do. Jim
Morrison, of late - how inspiring to see the one-time atropine-eyed
Byronic S&M Lizard King come clean stumbling around the stage with a
Colt 45 in hand and finally wave his dong at the teeny minnions who
came there to see him hold both it and his gut and give them some more
vivid production which communicated nothing real but *suggested*
everything a fertile pube brain could dredge up.

"What we need are more "stars" willing to make fools of themselves,
absolutely jump off the deep end and make the audience embarrassed for
them if necessary, so long as they have not one shred of dignity or
mythic corona left. Because the whole damn pompous edifice of this
supremely ridiculous rock 'n roll industry, set up to grab bucks by
conning youth and encouraging fantasies of a puissant "youth culture"
would collapse, and with it would collapse the careers of the hyped
talentless, nonentities who breed off of it. Can you imagine Led
Zeppelin without Robert Plant conning the audience: "I'm gonna give you
every inch of my love" - he really gives them nothing, not even a
good-natured grinful "Howdy-do" - or Jimmy Page's arch scowl of
    supermusician ennui ?...

"...however, since conditions are in the present nigh irremediable
mess, with innocent listeners led and hyped, and duped and doped,
taught to grovel before drug-addled effeminate Limeys who once
collected blues 78s and a few guitar lessons and think that that makes
them torch-bearers; a hapless public, finally, of tender boys and girls
pavlov'd into salivating greenbacks and stoking reds at the mere
utterance of certain magic incantations like "supergroup" and
"superstar" - well is it any wonder your poor average kid, cruisin'
addled down the street in vague pursuit of snatch or reds or rock mag
newsstands, ain't got no truck with the Stooges ?...."

Re .0: So what he's saying, correct me if I'm wrong, is that he likes
the Stooges but doesn't like Led Zep?

I think he said a whole lot more than that Rod. I remember the
equivalent of "sheep" (or smt) adulating "drug-addled effeminate
    Limeys"

It kinda sums it all up really doesn't it ? I think Led Zeppelin was a
misprint actually. I'm sure he meant the shitty mondays.

Hmph, this "Bangs" guy (what a stupid pseudonym!) sounds like he's just
    jealous. Like all critics.

If he could squeal as good as a drug-drenched porker like Robert "Call
Me Johnson Please" Plant, he'd be casting his organ of generation
    instead of aspersions.

Hmmm...Tony Parsons wrote in a similar style to this Bangs fellow
if not a tad more vitriolic. Now look at him, he's written a George
Michael biog and given up his former "take no prisoners" style. Sad.
As for Burchill, is she still writing for one of the broadsheets?

    Barry.

p.s. One hack worth a read is Steven Wells of the NME. Never a
    dull moment.

The .0 excerpt is from one of Bangs's earliest efforts. Long before
Tony Parsons learned how to paste cutup newsprint, Bangs had moved on
to spews of vitriol still unmatched for tangy consistancy. (Picks to
hit: "James Taylor Marked for Death" and the Eating Elvis Presley's
    Corpse piece.)

In yet another uncanny bit of foreshadowing, Bangs cowrote a book about
Rod Stewart, the George Michael of his time.

Burchill has made her fortune writing the ninties equivalent of a
bodice-ripper, and contributes to the Sunday Times, occasionally. She
still has some acid left, but it's being thrown at the wrong faces, on
the whole. She is married to an accountant. I met her once at the NME,
nice woman, I thought (Oh for God's sake Piers, I thought you'd
_promised_ no more name-dropping - Ed.)

    Hi,
just a quick note to say that I've deleted my two earlier entries
(in answer to Mark's observation -;).

It's surprising what a bad week at work can do to a fella's mood and
replies. So sorry Mark, I never thought you notes were "b______s"
I had a very bad day that day (all for a good {customer} reason).

    Hope all's well. Keep noting.

You were remarkably restrained compared to some replies I've elicited!

Yup Mark. Such are the ups and downs of noting life. I hope nobody takes
me too seriously anyhow. This notes is just a handy punchbag (isn't it
   bob, ray, mikef, anyone ??)

And why is everyone slagging Nanci Griffith ? I think she's great. I
was in Thurles on sat morn and most of Sunday afternoon/evening.

Nothing to write home (or here) about. It really looked like The
Stunning (on Sunday evening) were the crowd's favourites of the whole
   weekend.

    >> Who's Nanci Griffith?

A Texan gal. Good country-ish singer (makes a break from irish c&w
y'understand). "Storms" is worth a listen. Very square here in the
thames valley but who cares ?

In Thurles she affected her drawl to tell the crowd to "darn well stop
throwing yourselves up into the air - somebody could hurt themselves"
(at that stage the friendly Dublin bouncers intervened).
