868.0. "THE UNDERTONES" by ULYSSE::CHAMPOLLION (Miracle in Rennes) Wed Jul 17 1991 17:17

    This topic dedicated to:

                        T H E U N D E R T O N E S

Sheer magic from the post-punk era and Northern Ireland.

    My first queries are:

    - Have all their LPs been published as CDs?
    - I heard they reunited for a Charity concert. Anyone heard/was there -
      Impressions, songs they played, etc.

    Merci beaucoup.

    Crikey!

Est-ce le meme JF CHAMPOLLION qui 'moderate' la conference 'FOOTBALL' ?

I saw the Undertones once, near the end of their career supporting
Peter Gabriel at Crystal Palace F.C. (there Stuart, I've trampled
the hallowed(?) turf of Selhurst). Good band. A lasting memory is of
seeing them on T.V., a very old recording of when they played a youth
club in Derry. Feargal Sharkey was wearing an annorak and smoking
every cigarette as if it were his last.

The Undertones, Bradford St. Georges Hall, Autumn 1979, shortly before
(or after?) the release of "Hypnotised".

The greatest concert I ever attended. Never before or since have I seen
a band that came anywhere near them. Cartwheels and mayhem on the dance
floor; no frills, no bullshit, no lasers on stage. And they seemed to
be enjoying themselves. Shame that no-one in the place could understand
a word that Feargal Sharkey said.

They went downhill after that - I know you disagree Champers, but
    you're a musician and I'm just a punter - and when I saw them in 1983,
    they were ropey and bored.

    God bless John Peel.

Re -2: Yes, I am the same man...

Re -1: Sure, their first LP is sheer class, one of those about which
people say: "Oh, I like some of their early stuff".

But given the pressure from their record company to sound more "modern"
I think they maintained a good level throughout. Please listen to their
two last LPs with an open ear. They are less direct, that I agree, but
    contain vintage material still.

And my initial question remains unanswered: Can you buy all their LPs
in CD format? If yes, I shall then purchase the machine. The only
reason why I haven't bought a CD player is precisely because I can't
find their records in CD yet.

All the 'tones albums are now available on CD (about time too).

For me 'Posistive Touch' is their best.

Feargal Sharkey once gave me a Positive Touch T-Shirt. I wish now that
I hadn't worn it to death at the time.
