835.0. "It's not what you know... Matty needs your help!" by IGETIT::BROWNM (Isn't reality only virtual anyway?) Tue Apr 30 1991 14:06

Well folks. I'm leaving DEC and though there is the possibility that I
may still be doing the same job for another company I doubt whether
I'll have access to Notes. It happens in August.

I'm getting a bit of redundancy money, so I plan to set up a band and
buy all the relevant gear (ie. add to what I have now).

So what I'd like to ask is for your help. A lot of you out there could
be useful helping me get on with my music. Any DJ's out there might be
in the market for playing any 12" white label I come up with, there
might be someone out there who knows a rep, or someone who can get me
cheap instruments, or someone who knows someone who..., etc. Maybe
    just advice.

Maybe some of you would want to buy a demo tape! (in 6 months).

I'll write more on what I plan to do later, I've got to get back on
    with my work.

Best of luck Matty, I'd like to hear your demo, if you ever tour in
Brighton I'll interview you for the Poly paper if you like =8*).

Six years too late. All of the people I knew at NME are dead or senile now
(myself included, I sometimes think). Good luck, anyway.

    Matty,
I currently sing in a band which will be breaking up soon (we're
all going off to Uni' and poly' - me included). Our main influence is
Ride and we write all our own stuff except for a cover of "8 Miles
    High" by the Byrds.

So if you ever find yourself living in Brighton and looking for a
lead vocalist to sing with an indie-style band (Wedding Present
influenced preferred) then llok me up at the Poly'.

Oh well, you can't say I didn't try!!

    Good luck,

    Russell.

Are you off to Brighton poly?? I'm going back there in September for
my fourth year, if there's naything you want to know about the place
give me a bell on 7 899 5214 or mail me on Tim Price @ RDL. What
course are you going to do. Anyone with a love of Ride and the Weddoes
    is fine by me.

But who's going to keep me up-to-date on the latest Madonna singles
    when you go???  %*{

Well, almost everyone I know in the biz has killed themselves. Or have
gotten "real" jobs. However, I still have one friend at RCA (she's
one of about 2 people left from the time I was there--3 years ago!)
Her office is right next to the A&R staff's offices (she's involved
in contracts & business stuff.) Maybe she could slip your tape
into their "must sign" pile. (Of course, that's if she's still there
by the time you make a tape.)

Anyway, good luck with your music.

Brighton is Creation city so if you send me a demo I could try and drop
it in Alan McGee's pocket at a gig, he seems to go to them all down
there, and remember they have a dance side to their label so your luck
    could be in =8*).

Matty,

After having a think about it, this bloke that's just moved into my house
does the lighting at Royale's in Manchester, I'll talk to him and see if he
knows anyone. He seems to quite well in with Technotronic...

Then again, why should we help you? You're supposed to go through the rough,
tumble, living-in-a-carboard-box life that most bands have to go through.
It's all part of the life, man ;-)

    Paul,

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to dodging the bottles, the sleeping
on floors, fiver a gig between 4 of us, punctures on the way to the
gigs, the stolen equipment, etc. :-)

Don't forget my offer to help you produce, Matty. You'll probably go
on to become really famous and make loads of money, and the rest of us
will be stuck here in a pay freeze and moanin' in notes.

Does this mean we will see you being interviewed on DefII next year?

I have in my possession no fewer than 6 of Matty's earliest works.
should I hang on to them in case they become collectors items soon?

    Bootlegs, anyone? Going cheap!

I can also reveal that contrary to Matty's claims he is not 'from the
streets' at all and has never lived in Finsbury Park. He used to play with
smurfs at an early age, especially Smurfette.

.15 is definitely the sound of someone who either a) cares about his
music enough to not want to foist (possibly) substandard product on his
public, or b) doesn't want anyone cashing in on his future mega-stardom by
relasing said product at a later date.

How much do you want for the safe return of your tape, Matty...????

    Bob

    re-1,

    It's a) and c). c) is that I don't want b) because it's a).

    Confused yet?

I'm thinking about setting up a 0302 Newsletter group. ie. a list of
interested parties, people who might be willing to swap money for demo
    tapes, 0302/matty Brown t-shirts ;-) etc.

I got this idea from John Otway's book - he has about 400 people on his
list to whom he sends these newsletters informing them of any
developments. Also the Inspirals use this to flog their t-shirts.

Does anyone have more any ideas on this?

I know that Ride do this, when they were touring in the days before
they could afford hotels etc they asked for peoples floors to stay on
and ended up on my mate Jason's floor well one of them anyway.

Well folk, I'm definately off. Moving back to `Bonny Donny'
    (Doncaster) in August.

I'm going for the newletter thing, so if you want to be on it just mail
me with your address and phone number. Of course if this doesn't work
out I could come and burgle your house ;-)

My plan is for the first newsletter in about 6 months saying that if
you send me a blank tape I'll copy some of my stuff onto it and send it
back - who knows it could be worth a mint in years to come ;-). The
second newsletter will probably announce a national tour and the third
my forthcoming TV appearance on the Johnathon Ross show ;-) ;-) ;-)

The risks of this are starting to hit me - the job situation in
Doncaster is impossible and I won't be able to claim from the Social
Services (Welfare in Americanspeak), and then of course there are 100's
of records out each week. Geeeezzz, it's going to be fun ;-) I've
started sending my CV to record shops in the area - it's got to be fun
standing about listening to records all day!

I'd really appreciate it if you sumbitted yourself to the Newsletter
list. I reckon the bigger the audience the better, then it all depends
    on my music.

It's about time I started deleting all my embarrassing Notes - it'll
    take ages ;-)

    Demo Tapes;
    -----------

I'm committing to getting the first newsletter out before the end of
October. The people whose addresses I already have will receive a demo
tape free (about 20 people). Anyone who is not yet on my list but
wants a copy of the demo will need to send me their name and address,
but the tape will cost 2.00 pounds to cover the blank and postage.

Hopefully the tape will be 4 tracks, 2 hardcore House, 1 guitar based
Indie/Dance/Pop and the other will revolve around the Ambient tag. The
quality of the recording should be pretty good and fingers crossed, so
    too the music!

Any questions? I'm on 7851-3671 during normal working hours.

    matty

ps. Thanks to those who've mailed me for their interest.

Wow, a freebie, I'm looking forward to it already. So when's the first
