801.0. "The Old Grey Whistle Test?" by CELTIK::JACOB (Teenage Moody Nugent Turtles) Wed Feb 06 1991 04:22

Does the TV show, "The Old Grey Whistle Test" still exist in the UK.
Used to watch it every week, always had a top name band live in the
studio. Left the UK in '78 and have only been back once in '80
and I'm just curious if it is still around.

It called itself Whistle Test for a while, then vanished. Must have
gone around 87 ish? There now seems to be a lack of decent music shows
on TV. SNUB shows videos, and occasional live footage, and The Word is
a good cure for insomnia. Bring back the Tube!

OGWT had a bit of a revamp in the early 80s, must have been around the
time Bob Harris left, surprise surprise. It became, as .1 noted, known
simply as Whistle Test and for two or three years was very good. But
Ch4 and Beeb2 seemed to lose their taste for good pop programmes in the
mid-80s. The Tube disappeared, a sad loss since nothing has ever been
as good again, and the BBC first shortened WT from 50 minutes to 30
minutes, then axed it altogether for no apparent reason. Nowadays
there's Rapido and Snub (not that I get to see them anymore) and,
depressingly, Bob Harris is back on radio 1 playing his favourite
boring old records (great show if you like the, yeeuch, Eagles)

It really is about time the media in the UK (and by that I mean TV) got
its act together and put on some decent music.

The exception seems to be CH4, but the beeb must have hours and hours
of great music on tape.....why can't they show some of it instead of
giving us hours of opera on a Saturday night, every boring moment of
the proms, every year etc etc. and all those films which they repeat
    over and over again.

Wasn't it 'Just Beats Working', or was that the dance version of a
    couple of years ago?
