790.0. "The Beautiful South ???" by FLYWAY::WIEDLER (grezi) Mon Jan 21 1991 14:23

Since the old note about the band "The Beautiful South" (461.) seems
to be "dead" I start a new one. I got there album "Choke" as a present
and I like it. But I don't know much about the band - except that
one or two band members are ex-Housemartins.

Does anybody know more about them?
Are there other albums by this band?
Where are they from? South? North?
    Do they play live?

You didn't have to start a new note because everyone hits "next
unseen" anyway and would've seen your note.

To do "next unseen," first set seen/before=today (you can do a specific
time and date if you like,) then hit the "paste" or "," button on
the numeric keypad and voila, you get the next "unseen" note.

They do play live and they come from Hull, which is in the North. The
first LP is really really good - give it a listen!

The new Beatiful South album is actually already out - I bought the CD last
Saturday here in Zurich.

As mentioned in .-1 it is called "0898" (whatever that means...?). I have
listened to the album the whole weekend... I quite like it, has some great
songs!

Do they often do concerts? I would like to see them when I am back in
England for holidays. Do they play in the "beautiful north" (that's where I
usually go)? Do they play in Hull sometimes?

As mentioned in .-1 it is called "0898" (whatever that means...?). I have

0898 is the std code used in the UK for telephone numbers of a dubious
nature, such as Naughty Nurses 0898 123456

    Balders
(Who has never called an 0898 number, honest!)

Not all 0898 numbers are dubious. They basically cover all 'service'
lines run for profit (such as Ski conditions, TV schedules, sports
    result services, etc, etc).

RE: .-1/.-2

Ah... I see... in Switzerland we have such service numbers as well
("156*"), and actually the Swiss Public Telephone company has legal
problems now: some people think, the state should not make money from
"naughty" services...

There are "non-dubiuos" services as well: Digital Switzerland just started
a telephone service called "PC TELEsupport". If you have a PC problem you
call 156* and you get an expert at the other end which gives you hints for
sFr. 2.-/minute...

But because of the "dubious" services, lots of companies made it impossible
to reach 156* numbers from the employee's telephones...

Re .9:

There have been scandals in the UK about 0898 numbers. The big one a year
or two back concerned "chatlines", which let you talk to a number of other
people about anything you like. Teenagers would phone these things for hours
and run up enormous telephone bills.

As to companies blocking Swiss 156 numbers, I think it's true that Digital in
Reading DECpark has blocked calls to 0898 numbers (?).

790.120898 BEATIFUL SOUTHFLYWAY::CHAOT::WIEDLERhis excuses are an art...Tue Mar 31 1992 10:3879
Okay, here a track listing - together with a few
"typical" lines from every song:

THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH - 0898 BEATIFUL SOUTH

1. Old Red Eyes is back

...red from the night before the night before
walked into the wrong bar walked into a door...

2. We are each other

...closer than a sister to her baby brother
closer than a secret agent working under cover
	too close for a lover...

3. The rocking chair

	...I'll take this deep despair
of a 30 year old square
	to the rocking chair...

4. We'll deal with you later

...don't worry if it's Queen or Duke
	try scything down the pair...

5. Domino Man

... I am living life just as fast I can
a nod, a wink, another drink, I am the Domino Man...

6. 36D

	...you're just another 365-night stand
	but you're so handy...

7. Here it is again

	...you're th best so far
all the way to the church from the back of a car...

8. Something that you said

	...I said close your eyes
	and imagine that I'm nice...

9. I am your Nr.1 fan

...I am the richly blessed daughter
of a mother with tattoed arms... Yes I (h)am.

10. Bell-bottomed tear

	...We promise ourselves
	this is no one-night stand...

11. You play glockenspiel, I'll play drums

...there's a girl with a plastic pair of shoes
	two eyes permanently bruised...

12 When I'm 84

	...no dribbling or incontinence
no longing for the old sixpence
just smoking weed til age makes sense...

Difficult to say something in a few words, but I try:

I think the new album continues the style of the two
first ones: similar themes - "love" (or what it can be
called), everyday's struggle, (working class) background
etc. mixed with a touch of black british humour, irony
and understatement. Still the characteristic poppy,
"pseudo-trivial" arrangements, lots of excellent piano
and keyboards, and the singing even more perfect.

Sounds good, although I did think there was quite a lot of difference
in style between the 1st and the 2nd albums.

To make it complicated I would put it like this:
1. the things that album 1 & album 2 have in common is also on album 3;
2. album 3 defers from album 2 as much as album 2 from album 1... ;-)

The female singer Briona Corrigan (sp?) is quite good again.

My question in .6 is still unanswered... Are there occasions to SEE the
band? Are they on TV sometimes? How popular are the anyway in Britain?
... I was surprised that here in Switzerland even shops with a quite small
selection have at least one Beautiful South CD in.

funny you should ask, felix, I've just been listening to it and think
it's pretty good too. Some great lyrics especially "36D".

Another album much played at our house is SOUL II SOUL's latest.
    Perhaps you'd enjoy this too.

ALL of his stuff, Housemartins + Beautiful South, has all had great
    lyrics.

Do they play in Switzerland as well?

The track is on the limited relesase 2nd CD of

Bit of an odd note, but I thought I'd post this and my flatmate agreed
    it was worthy.

Has anyone else noticed that Paul Heaton looks the spit of Ron Dixon
    (from Bookside) ?
