721.0. "Throbbing Gristle" by XSTACY::PATTISON (A rolling stone gets the worm) Mon Aug 20 1990 14:02

I've a feeling I might be the sole contributor to this topic, but
    anyway...

I recently purchased "ONCE UPON A TIME". This album documents TG's
farewell UK concert in London, in which they played with Cabaret
Voltaire and Clock DVA, this was back in 1981 (I think).

Like many TG live artefacts, this one sounds like it was recorded on a
Sony Walkman kept in the hood of somebodys duffelcoat. The album is
dominated by a 20+ minute version of "Discipline (Anthem for doomed
youth)", and can only be recommended to the already converted.
i.e. You just had to BE there.

The Throbbing Gristle mission was terminated later the same year, and
from its ashes rose PSYCHIC TV and CHRIS AND COSEY.

Dave, what can you recommend by TTG? And by P. TV and C & C? Also, was Cab
Volt or Clock DVA on the record too? Just heard some new Clock DVA and it
sounds WONDERFUL.

    Re: -1

I'm not sure I'd recommend Throbbing Gristle records to anyone, but
I'll make an exception in your case, Ed!

Well, the first point to make is I really don't know what you'll find
currently available in the shops.. There have been many more
"posthumous" releases than when the group were together. And all of the
original releases were in limited quantity.

First of all, I'd stay away from the "live" recordings, not because of
the dubious sound quality, but more because of the content; TG gigs
were as important visually as aurally and the records don't do them any
justice. (p.s. No Clock DVA/Cab.Volt arent on that album)

The most important recording I suppose is their first album, "2nd
Annual Report", which contains some very exhilarating material indeed
("Slug Bait" is incredible). Unfortunately my copy was stolen and I
have never managed to replace it.

Better than this (and the album I'd recommend first) however is "20
Jazz Funk Greats", an album that covers various different aspects of
their work. Alternatively, the US only release "Throbbing Gristle's
Greatest Hits" which is mainly tracks from these two albums and
from another, "D.o.A" sounds like it would be worth a listen.

Throbbing Gristle once issued a box set of 24 C60 tapes, all original
and previously unreleased material, retailing at 100 quid a set. They
actually sold over 200 copies. (No, my student grant never stretched
    that far)

Other projects by members of TG are Psychic TV, Chris and Cosey, and
Coil (I'd forgotten that one). Psychic TV have been even more prolific
than TG were (they are even in the Guinness Book of records) and like
TG cover a wide spectrum of musical styles/anti-styles. The single
releases tend to be the best, and include a cover of "Good Vibrations",
"Godstar" (a tribute to Brian Jones) "Papal Breakdance" (just what it
says) and "Tune In (Turn it on)", one of the best acid-house records
you will ever hear. Their first single, "Just Drifting" was the first
record recorded in "holographic sound" (whatever that means), the B-side,
"Ov Power" is my favourite of all. PTV albums are just a bit too self
indulgent, and a result of reading too much Aleister Crowley. The first
album included a free album of sounds like "goats thigh bones falling
into a sarcophagus". I havent heard any of the "Live in ...(substitute
    European Capital)" albums.

Chris and Cosey have made several albums, sometimes under the guise of
"The Creative Technology Institute", I have heard just three, the best
of which is "Exotika". C+C were the musical half of Throbbing Gristle,
and I think theyre still quite popular in the San Francisco Bay Area,
where Cosey and Genesis P. Orridge once "performed" as Coum
Transmissions back in the early seventies. "Songs of Love and Lust"
contains some goodies, notably "Driving Blind" but is patchy.

I don't know anything about Coil, except that Peter "Sleazy"
Christofferson is one of the members.

If you have trouble finding any of this lot I could probably do up a
tape if you're interested. I do know that some TG CD's were released a
year or two ago, but I don't know which ones.

Thanks for the info, I'm real interested in PTV at this point. Thanks
for the tape offer but you can save your postage for now, I'll hit up
local resources (The Grabo) for a tape or two...Sorry for the tangent
but R U aware of a new Clock DVA release?

Oh ed you should forget about PTV - they have sooo much vinal out
that it is sick - and all of it I would consider to be pretty abismal
(sp) - the best thing they _ever_ put out was under the guise of
MESH and was the song 'Meet Every Situation Head On' - a really
good track - PTV is some sort of hippie religion too - as for Coil
they have some really good stuff out and have worked with Mr Foetus
Clint Ruin - Horse Rotivator is a good start - also did 'Unreleased
    Themes to Hell Raiser'.

up-beat?

The Temple of Psychick Youth. Basically this is satanism in disguise,
all fairly harmless really though I'm sure.

the MESH single is available on the 'Jack the Tab' acid house
collection (at Newbury) - also a 12" vinal remix is available -
the 12" is what I want on cd - but might have to settle for vinal
    - but there is a new PTV disc out that looks like it has remixes
on it - advertised in Boston Rocks - but didn't see it at Newbury
    on Newbury.

Hey! I've almost given up finding this group's name on any conference! At
last I came across here(Jim Zappia pointed me out this topic. Thanks!).
I've been listening TG for a decade. Yes, we can have them in Japan, too.
Recently I found their CDs at big music shop in Yokohama, and now I got:

	2nd Annual Report
	D.o.A
	20 Jazz Funk Greats
	Heathen Earth
Mission Terminated(Last live in San Francisco)
	Greatest Hits

These are re-issued version(by Chris Carter in 1990) and each include their
singles as bonus tracks, Zyklon B(for which I was looking), Dicipline,
United, Something Came Over Me, etc.

If you're new to TG, first, I recommend '20 Jazz Funk Greats'. After that,
try 'Heathen Earth'. The latter is live album, very clear sound.
I've ever seen their video live in Japan. Maybe it was last chance to see
Cosey Funni Tutti is playing a colnet, Good old days!

   Throbbing trivia...

Someone told me recently that Genesis P. Orridge himself has an
e-mail address on the internet, and subscribes (and contributes)
to some mailing lists in the S.F. bay area.
