Certainly one of the better performances seen in the R.D.S. over the
past few years.Though it took a while for the P.A. system to operate
effectively, Joel showed what a top class performer he is ,with
his version of "Molly Malone" he had the audience in his grasp.
His narrative intros were unique.
One highlight of the gig occured before the beginning of the fourth
or fifth song, the 30,000 or so in the audience broke out in chants
of "ole, ole ole......."( the intro to one of the Irish world cup
songs),which Joel seemed to enjoy,he then retreated backstage and
arrived onstage, kicking two footballs into the ecstatic crowd.......
from then on it was hysteria ,green white and gold scarves/caps were
thrown onto the stage,(you would be forgiven for thinking it was
another Irish victory) as Joel belted out the songs his voice was
drowned by the buzz around the R.D.S.
The largest cheer of the day was for "We didn't start the
fire",however he only included one verse of the Irish World Cup
version, which was being sung in the arena. While nothing could dampen
the spirits of the crowd ,the only drawback of the fine evening
was that the large video screen was uneffective until the last half an hour
or so.
The only dissappointing feature of the show was the entertainment between
the Wilf Brothers departure and Joel's arrival, 45 minutes or so
of "testing one two....",while I appreciate it takes a while to
get all the equipment arranged and tested,it surely wouldn't cost
much to have interval music of some sort,...........after all tickets
were 18.50punts and 20.00punts per head.
Joel's departing comment was that it took him 41 years to come
to Ireland, and he sure was glad he did ,but for those of you who
missed it ,I hope we will be around for his next tour
