688.0. ""NEW!" "Club Music" satellite radio........." by JGO::KWIKKEL (The dance music library 1969-20..) Tue Jun 05 1990 12:32

    Hi all,

Playing with the just received sattellite receiver my buddy"Dirk"
    has now,we accendentally"tripped over"a U.K. radio station that
play's the best stuff in the club/dance music scene.

At this moment that station X'mit's in testing stage in mono during
the day time and in stereo at night time(after 17.00pm) and they
call it "Club music/Pirate radio" from the Astra sattellite on
    frequency's 738 &756 Mhz at channel 5.
This station is planning to start regular broadcasting under
"subscription only" format at the end of june '90.

My qstn is,`do any of you know more about this radio station?'
The station stated that you can only listen to it when you have
subscribed to it.I wonder how then would they scramble the broadcast?
They also stated that only U.K. citizens can call for information
    and subscription,that leaves us Euro's out?Or what? :^)

This is very interesting cuz they play the stuff in mix format without
DJ talk other than the stations commercials and info.
    The records are(at this moment)not played completely,but mixed out,so
    record credits(artist/title)are not mentioned.

To get in touch with them you write/call/Fax to the following:

    Club music/Pirate radio,
    Innovation house,
    Overley park Candully (sp?)
    Surry, postcode:GU15-2PL
    England.

    Tel;0276-684716
    Fax;0898-666074

    Give us something OK?

Hmmm, must be a very recent addition, I worked for WHSTV until the
end of April, and I don't recall anything being mentioned - got
to better than Lifestyle though 8*). I in an office filled with
TV sets showing nothing but Lifestyle and Screensport, unless of
course when noone was looking when MTV would appear.

I'll ring a few ex colleagues and see if it is just a test or will
    become full time.

I Listened to 'Club Music' last night and found the music great...
Only problem is, when you hear a track you like you don't get to find
    out what its called!!

Something to listen to in the bath anyway!

    RE.7

Yeah Craig...can you do something about that?
    Call them or something?
When I pickup the phone, they seem to have the horn off the hook.
(is that the start of a fading illusion?)
And they strickly notify listners that ONLY UK residents may call
    and subscribe...

Can someone explain to me, a simpleton, in English, what the frequency
    is? eg FM 1022.

I think you have to have a satellite dish recieving one of the Astra
channels to get it - I don't think a normal radio will pick it up?

What's the cost, and is it worth it?
688.12WOTVAX::HARRISCNe Te Confundant Illegitimi !Thu Jun 07 1990 14:419
Probably the cheapest you'll pay for a compleate system is 250-300
pounds. For this you will be able to pick up all channels the Astra
satellite has to offer, eg MTV, Eurosport etc and also any radio
stations, eg Club Music, Sky Radio. Most channels broadcast stereo
sound too, which is good especially on MTV, Movie channel etc.

Not cheap, but you can always rent!

So why do you subscribe? ie. who's to say you can't pick up these
signals without subscribing. Is it like the TV licence thing?
688.14If its scrambled, you'll need a decoder.WOTVAX::HARRISCNe Te Confundant Illegitimi !Fri Jun 08 1990 11:3014
    Re -1

Screensport and Lifestyle (Club music) are both owned by W.H Smith, and
are very soon going to be scrambled. I don't know whether or not the
Audio will be, if it isn't then I don't see any way of them stopping
    people listening.

I think the subscription refers to the whole thing rather than just
Club Music itself, but i'm not sure.

Jan, where did you hear about this?
