Well, Fatima Mansions played in the Warwick on Monday night and were great.
Cathal was as angst-ridden as ever and there's a really good hard edge to the
music : compare "Blues for Ceaucescu" with any of Microdisney's last stuff and
there's quite a difference, though still keeping very much the Microdisney sense
of humour and subject matter. Musically the same line up as Microdisney too,
guitar, bass, drums and keyboards and vocalist. The band tee-shirts they were
wearing read "Keep Music Evil", hmmmmm....
The crowd was small, I was a bit dismayed when four of the tiny initial
audience turned out to be the support act, The Mothers. The small numbers also
meant we got the full benefit of the PA, which was probably more than a bit
overpowered for the size of the venue. The support band were good though, not
afraid to turn up the guitar and use very Tom Verlaine / Bobby Kreiger type
breaks. Nothing really new or inspiring on a first hearing though.
The crowd didn't get much bigger and at the gig's end ( 1.45 am ) the place was
about half full ( half empty? ). That said, it's good to be in a crowd that
looks like it actually meant to be there, rather than the "come late, come drunk
and talk all the way through" crowd that seems to be closer to the norm in
Galway. ( For example, Martin Stephenson's last gig and Hank Wangford's a
couple of weeks ago.) And at 4 a head it was a great value gig.
As for up and coming events in Galway, there seems to be very little planned,
maybe with colleges breaking up for the Summer, the number of bands that happen
to be passing on tours drops.

| I would have gone, Stephen but I was busy Monday. Do keep this note up
to date with Galway events. Sorry I missed it now. Fatima Mansions got
a positive review in NME last week too.
What are the best places to go to at night? I've not been here
long, so I've not really investigated. I've seen ads for some place
called the International, who have some sort of reggae evening on
Thursdays - know anything about it? What are the places to avoid?
What are you all doing this weekend? (only Galway people need answer!)

| >>> -< Bored of Galway >-
Yeah! And this is meant to be a fun town! Ha, bl**dy ha!
>>> What are the best places to go to at night?
Loaded question, Dave. Well, here's the way I feel:
Live Music:
==========
Good venues: Big Band Venues: Pubs:
The Warwick Leisureland (ugh) McSwiggans on Sunday night
CJ's Seapoint (OK)
Upstairs in the Oasis
As you may have noticed, Galway, while it does import lots of good bands,
doesn't produce too many good uns (IMO). Therefore, the pub band scene leaves
a lot to be desired. If you're into jazz, then Sunday morning is the time for
you (King's Head? - is it still there). If traditional is your cup of tea,
then just walk until you hear it. The Crane Bar & Clogs are two well known
trad music pubs, though I believe that the crowd may have moved/changed in the
Crane recently.
Pubs:
====
There's lots Dave. The only problem is that you run into 20 Deccies
anytime you go into any of them. You have to check them all out & decide for
yourself. I like McSwiggans, The Quays, Naughton's & The King's Head.
Nightclubs:
==========
This is the one place where Galway does quite well.
Well, rather than badmouth anywhere (which may not be legal), I'll
simply tell you which ones I like on a given night. The criteria that I go by
is dance-music. If you're shy like me, you have to bring your own crowd no
matter which one you goto. The good thing is that there are no dress rules to
speak of (well, in the summer you might get some hassle on the door of CJs if
you're not wearing a shirt, but it's usually OK to turn up in a tee-shirt)
Monday :- Central Park (CP) & Oasis
Tuesday :- CP & Oasis
Wednesday :- Oasis & CP (Oasis: 60% rock, 40% dance)
Thursday :- Oasis & CP (Oasis: 95% acid, house, dance, Mix in CP)
Friday :- CP
Saturday :- CJ's
Sunday :- CP
If you like 60's music (& an older crowd) check out Kno Kno's (but don't tell
anyone that I said to). If on the other hand, you like fresh and crumbly
young uns check out The Warwick (for some real Acid/Dance/Soul).
What do the rest of ya think?

Unbelievable, I DON'T believe it (as a certain duo would say). Phew!
And what's wrong with the Ojaysus Friday, Sat, and Sun too (apart from gettinh
there pretty sharpish - forget the pub). In fact, what's wrong with the
Oasis Mon to Sun, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year? Sound's good to me! Yeah.

672.5 | | CLADA::SOCONNOR | Well, I prefer their earlier stuff myself | Wed May 30 1990 10:16 | 20 |
| Well,
I have to agree with Brian about Galway, if you're interested in music as a
punter, it sucks. Sure there are plenty of bands that play in pubs and plenty
of pubs that have bands play in them but this alone a decent rock venue does
not make.
This recent business with "Tennent's Live" seems to have brought some good
stuff, mainly to the Warwick and CJ's, though it can be a very boozey late night
drinking affair. I suppose that could be the point,( "pint" even ).
Plus at the back of it all, there doesn't seem to be all that much interest
really. We may be on the west coast, in the bay area, but it's fairly quiet on
the music front usually, ( except the country and western music front of
course).
I see Pat Stephens came direct from the Oasis to enter a note before 8am, dead
impressive. Apart from "The OJaysus", I heard somebody else call it "The
Osmosis", because it sucked. Actually it's not too bad, but every night?
Stephen

| The Osmosis, well... maybe not EVERY night.
But in regard to concerts here, I haven't gone to many (since falling asleep
at Guy Clark), but anytime I do, the crowd seems to be on the small side,
even for quite well known acts.
It's surprising, considering that Galway's got a large young population,
and very surprising when compared to other smaller provincial towns that
have a much better-quality and better-attended "scene".
Until recently too, most non-Irish bands touring the Waterford-Cork-Tralee-etc.
circuit appeared to avoid Galway for some reason (lack of promoters/venues?,
lact of interest?).
And Seapoint is really quite a good medium sized venue, but how often is it
used? A handful of times each year.

There's been a drought of any kind of entertainment in Galway lately, the World
Cup and the Salthill Festival may take some of the credit for that I suppose.
But the Arts Festival is coming and while it seems that in the bands department
it is a bit quiet here's the list so far ( minus my personal opinions and
categorisations ) :
Christy Moore Wednesday 18th
An Emotional Fish Tuesday 24th
Did quite well with "Celebrate" a while back - played recently in the Warwick.
Full Circle Thursday 19th
Recently broke the record for the longest running residency in the Baggot Inn
in Dublin ( 10 years or something huge like that ).
The Wilf Brothers Friday 20th
Featuring Richie Taylor ( Rock journalist in one of the Irish papers and ex of
the Rhythm Kings )
N.E.S.T. Wed 25th
New local group I know nothing about.
The Big Mistake Thurs 26th
Mary Stokes Blues Band Friday 27th.
Not really very good is it?
By the way, has anyone out there got an intinerary for the Thurles Festival?

all week!
The list of bands is a bit unimaginative, though. But don't miss The Big

| The Stunning...
This bands LP has reached number 3 in the charts, (as they kept
reminding us during the gig) partly due to the "Pay no more than five
pounds" sticker. They are a local band in Galway, and had a lot of
support, though the Seapoint certainly wasnt packed.
Generally the evening was enjoyable, however the Stunning will never
make it big outside Ireland. They seem to have a wide diversity of
sounds which makes them hard to categorize. Sometimes they're Aztec
Camera, sometimes the Doors, sometimes like Dire Straits, and they
even do a cover of Hendrix's Foxy Lady as an encore.
The strongest songs I thought were "Romeos on Fire" and "Burnin' up a
storm" (titles approximate!), catchy, memorable tracks, and the only
ones which you could say... That sounds like the Stunning.

672.14 | Thomas Mapfumo and Blacks Unlimited. - suppose this should be under concert reviews, but what the hell | GALVIA::STEPHENS | Anything can happen in the next half-hour. | Tue Jul 31 1990 10:57 | 29 |
| Anyone alse see Thomas Mapfumo and Blacks Unlimited in Seapoint. Good groovin'
music. It was my first introduction to them - apparently they were on the bill
at the Mandela concert, though.
The lads are from Zimbabwe; large band - a couple of guitarists, drums, horns,
maraccas, two ladies on backing vocals, strange hats, and Thomas. Thomas is
pushing Rolling Stone age-bracket, and his face shows it. But he prowls
around stage like a wild cat (that's what reviews normally say, isn't it?),
chanting away in his native tongue. The two ladies do some awesome dancing -
they got the best audience response when they launched into one of their wilder
routines.
Their music is quite unlike the South African township-jive kinda stuff. Slower
and more seductively danceable. The songs were very long, starting of slow but
building to a frenzied peak. The type of music that you start off just
standing around looking at, and after a while realise that your body has begun
swaying with everyone else. By the end, everybody was into some serious dancing.
They played for an hour, disappeared for a half-hour or so (when everybody would
have gone home disappointed, but for the bar), then back for another hour or
so. Started at 12 or so, ended at 2.30.
Seapoint was a good venue, the right size and acoustics, fairly full
bar at reasonable prices, lots of strange people with strange haircuts from
the various acts that were in town for the festival, men's toilets flooded
(Ollie Jennings recommending a trip round the back of the tourist office
outside!), and a large appreciative crowd.

| I'm sorry I missed that one, Patrick. Last Friday night I was at the
Warwick (only cos I couldn't get into the Oasis!) and saw the MARY
STOKES BAND, who are (I'm told) Ireland's hottest blues outfit at the
moment. Mind you its hard not to be hot in the Warwick, people sweat by
the pint in there. Anyway, if you like blues, this band are not to be
missed. In fact Mr. Mapfumo and some of his chums even came to see them.

| RE .0
> Does Galway live up to it's reputation as an arty and musical town ?
Whatever about its alleged reputation, I have had precisely ONE gig to go see
in the last five months since arriving here in february. IMHO Galway is most
certainly not a happenin' place. Ok, if you like trad music, then
Galway is the place, but for contemporary music/dance...
Usually for entertainment I get into my car with a few tapes, head for
silver strand or the countryside and crank up the volume. Pretty bored, is
what I am.
I have seen a fly-poster for a weekly event at a hotel somewhere in Salthill
that promises a mix of Hip-Hop, House, Reggae and World music, but not being
from Galway I dont know where the hotel is, and havent been able to find it.
Advice on where to go for some fun would be much appreciated. Actually, I
know virtually no-one in Galway, so if anyone out there wants to go for a
gargle some night (any night) ...
My thoughts on the current crop of Irish bands are probably best left
unwritten. But I've nothing else to do so I'll just say that it takes more
than a couple of pairs of sunglasses and some black clothes to make some
decent noise. As for the raggle-taggle scene, ugh. One band to avoid at all
costs are the notorious "Cypress, Mine!", from Cork. Unless you want a
good laugh , that is. I gather that to be in the Underground bar in
Dublin during the "A House" gigs there in 1986 has been likened, in some
quarters, to have been in the Liverpool Cavern in 1960.
I had the misfortune to have been present at the former. At the time,
I remember, I reckoned the lads had a fair few Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
albums. Ahh, "The Membranes", now that was a real gig.
Life-sized puppets and everything
BTW the one gig I've been to in Galway was the Fatima Mansions gig in the
Warwick (it took me ten minutes to find the place). I was the one in the
middle of the floor, white T-shirt. Actually, heres a story.
Since the gig needed to be well-advertised, to attract a fair-sized crowd,
then naturally there was no advertising. I wasn't actually aware it was on.
It was a Monday evening, and I'd been up since 5 AM, so I went to bed early,
aout 11 PM. I had Dave Fanning tuned on the Radio, and he had some guy on from
Cork spouting on about how vibrant the Cork music scene is now (a pathetic lie).
All of a sudden they start to talk about whats happening around the country,
and yer man says that "... in about 20 minutes time, Fatima Mansions will be
taking to the stage in the Warwick Hotel in Galway...". I jumped out of bed,
got dressed quickly and sped in to town, found the place and eagerly paid
my four quid. Not very many people there, but the sound was fab.
I was talking to Cathal Coughlan before the band want on stage, and he told me
his cousin works in DEC in Galway, a Denis O'Donovan. So now.
The man is a genius. Can't wait for his first book, "Berties Brochures".
Currently I'm working on a scheme to introduce the term "Rave" to the
Western seaboard. Well, theres enough barns out here anyway. Not so sure about
the portable phones though. 1988 Hacienda, 1989 Ibiza, 1990 Salthill ???
Happy Mondays and Paul Oakenfield to play Barna ??? If only ...

I was in a couple of music shops in Galway today, but NONE of them will
take credit-card bookings (!!!), so I doubt whether they'll be any use
to you. I was referred to HMV, Dublin by one of the shops, so perhaps
you could try there (next time I'm there I'll get full details - or
perhaps a Dublin noter could chase this up). It might be worthwhile
smiling sweetly at the person behind the counter of your local HMV.
The phone book lists the two Dublin HMV stores as
HMV Record Retail
65 Grafton St, Dublin 2 .... 6795334
18 Henry St. Dublin 1 .... 732899
I'd guess that the Grafton St one is the one to go for.

don't think it's going to be on quite the same scale. Also I heard last weekend
that ticket sales were going very poorly, so poorly in fact that the organisers
were trying to circulate a rumor that U2 were going to make a surprise
appearance on Sunday. However, even without U2, the line-up is very interesting.
The full line-up is:

| I'm thinking of traveling over to Ireland from Scotland for the Feile
Festival at the end of July. I would like to know where exactly in
Ireland it is taking place and what would be the best way to travel
to it. We will probably get the ferry over to Larne in the north and
either drive down or take a train though if there was a better way I
would be interested to know.
I would also like to know about the availability of tickets and about the
camping arrangements. If anyone could help could they please mail me or
post a reply.
Cheers
Allan Peden

re .40:
Neil Young & MG:s (+Booker T.) visited Helsinki, Finland 30 th June.
The gig was excellent! Southern Man, Like A Hurricane, Down By The
River; live classics! I strongly recommend to see him with this band.
