667.0. "My Bloody Valentine" by JOBBIE::PATTISON (A rolling stone gets the worm) Tue May 08 1990 10:16

Somehow, I've managed never to hear anything by My Bloody Valentine. Until
last night, that is, when someone played a track on Ireland's FM2. (I
don't generally listen to the radio).

I must admit I was instantly hooked. Without any doubt the best thing
I've heard all year. However, I didn't get the name of the track in
question. I don't even know if its a recent release or not.

It lasted six minutes or so, and consisted of a steady, haunting
interference guitar rhythm, with the occasional cocteau twins style
vocal blending in. (However this no doubt fits the description of more
    than one of their titles)

Perhaps someone in the know could post a discography?

Sounds like what you heard was Soon, from the new ep called Glider.
This ep is brilliant, and should be bought immediatly.(sp).

    errrr

They also have a great album called Isn't Anything, and another single
from a couple of years ago called You made me realise. All of these
you really ought to go and get this lunchtime.

    Nuff said.

<< Perhaps someone in the know could post a discography?

I may not be an expert on My Bloody Valentine but here's an incomplete
discography (in approximate chronological order) :

    Strawberry Wine E.P.
    Ecstasy L.P.
    You Made Me Realize E.P.
Feed Me With Your Kiss E.P.
    Isn't Anything L.P.

'Strawberry Wine' and 'Ecstasy' have been recently (that means a year or
two) re-released on a CD entitled 'Ecstasy And Wine'.

    Highly subjective appreciations now :

First three items are absolute classics; I've played them to death
(I mean, death of the record). The rest is more average, but anyhow
miles better than, for example, 'Circlesquare' by the Wonder Stuff,
(I award it 'Worst Waterboys imitation of the month').

    Enough said filthy mouth.

    Christophe.

Well I finally got my own copy of "Soon". I was over in the UK for
a long weekend. Ridiculous that they haven't released it in Ireland,
but there you go. I plumped for the 12 "Andrew Weatherall dance mix"
one, which I think is the best version. Although later I picked up a
7" copy in Woolworths, South Harrow reduced to 95p.

Actually Dave, since last week some time, I've been sharing a house with the CD
copy of "Isn't Anything". Only a couple of listens into it but like it a lot.

I saw them on the first day of Reading last year, though not knowing their
stuff I wasn't that impressed/interested. Though frankly I think I'll give up
outdoor gigs, they never suit, standing in the rain everything sounded like a
soundcheck.

the indie charts? I don't think much to the one I have, I'd like to

Sorry Dave, I said that all wrong. I like the rhythm on `Glider' but I
didn't see anything special about the rest, I was surprised it was
instrumental. I DO like some of this sort of music, I just wondered if
    the 12" had a more commercial/direct/instant appeal.

Round about Christmas time on the French radio I heard a MBV track
that I loved, but I could never pick out the title from the dj chatter.
Since the Tremeloe ep is current, I bought that and it's great, though
with a very weird sound, however it doesn't contain the sought-after
track. In Reading last weekend I looked at the Glider 12" in HMV and
thought I'd buy that on the off-chance. However, the record almost fell
out of the sleeve as I was walking to the check-out so I took a close
look and found it was covered in fingerprints and sported a scratch
with the general dimensions of a railway cutting. Didn't buy it. Today
I'm listening to an Indie compilation tape and bingo! the track is
"Soon" off the Glider ep. Shoulda read this note ages ago...

Well, I picked up a promo copy of 'loveless' at the weekend. Its hard
to review an MBV record, it sometimes passes beyond the bounds of 'what
is music' - I dunno. Its also hard not to use words such as
'kaleidoscope' or 'maelstrom'. The sounds have a wistful feel to them,
kind of reflective depths, that turn nasty. In fact, 'wistful
mayhem' is a good description of this album.

'Only Shallow' leads off, waxing and waning, and muttered vocals
somewhere in the mix. Next come some noises which had me checking my
CD player, coz I thought it had gone wrong somewhere. Then 'when you
sleep' and 'i only said', which are wonderful tracks. Last on the lp
is 'Soon', a reassuring sonic thud based on a hip hop drum track.

If you like this, get 'isn't anything', which perhaps has more obvious
songs, and is also very good.

If you dont have this, go and get it today sometime. Possibly.

I think listening 2 MBV is more like an experience or trip where u
interpret the sounds and moods in u're own way ...quite different
really, pretty experimental ...(that probably sounds like total crap
            - oh well what the hell!).........also this kind of music is very
hard 2 perform live..I saw them play in Dublin's Baggot Inn in april
90 + I was enthralled ,transfixed.. but recently in the SFX the sound was
bad + I was dissapointed with their performance ..
if u think I'm crazy ure probably right, but I'm gonna have fun every
    motherxxxxxn night...
                         Camille

Would there be anyone interested in the Andrew Weatherall remix of the
'Glider' EP. If so they can have it, for a small sum of money. I'm sure
we could come to some agreement. Personally I think its shite.
Basically, its just 'Soon' been farted about with and tarted up with a
few 'Ah Yeah's' and some 'Here we go!'s' put over the top with a lively
dance beat added also. If my memory serves me right.

So if there's anyone (in Reading) that may want to borrow/buy it then
    just let us know...

    Response from the antipodes.

Went to the MBV concert in November 1991 - they played with
Straitjacket Fits, a New Zealand band well worth checking out - they
too do a good line in kaleidoscopic thingummys.

The venue was the Phoenician Club, a beautiful old art nouveau place
with a high ceiling, red velvet curtains... think Winterland in the
Last Waltz, but with a really accessible stage.

I went on spec, not really knowing whether I'd like it.

And came away having seen one of the two or three best gigs of my life.
Words can't describe what went on in that room. The noise, absolutely
deafening, like a Boeing engine at takeoff, the faint vocals (who
gives a stuff what they were saying!), and that flute! It was like Ray
whathisname from the Moody Blues playing with Motorhead on Shostakovich's
    5th.

    Or something like that.

And the funny thing was that all the audience (except moi) were doped
to rthe eyeballs and m,issed it completely. Their loss. I hummed "soon'
    for months after that.

Now I'm a changed man... blah blah blah.

favourite songs are "Drive it all over me", "Only Shallow", "Come in
Alone", "soon" and anything else with THAT beat.

If any of the previous contributors are sdtill around, I'd love to know
if they've put anything out since "loveless", and have they been
    touring around the UK.

It's just a slow slow slow slow suck.

They have one track on the new Peace Together compilation lp, a cover
of 'All the time in the World'. Its meant to be brilliant, and I'd

I heard the new MBV track on the radio the other night. It was a cover
