*FIVE* tracks less? What a con! We haven't all got CD's. Which
are the ones that are missing? If it's any of the important ones
(like Jollity Farm) then I'll keep my money. Or better still, get
someone with the CD version to tape it for their own private use

| Where are they now.....
I saw a play/musical by Vivian Stanshall at the Bloomsbury Theatre
called Stinkfoot. It was a very funny story about a ventriloquist
called The Great Soliquisto. Stanshall did not appear but his voice
was used at some point (as God maybe?). I believe he wrote the play
while he was recovering in hospital from drink and nervous problems.
That was two years back. I don't know what he's doing now.
A picture of Legs Larry Smith appeared in an article in one of the
sunday sh*t sheets with George Harrison. According to the article
Smith is freeloading off Harrison at his mansion somewhere. They
are both into worshipping effigies of Hitler, blah, blah, Harrisons
wife does not get on with Smith, blah, blah. Not a very believable
article!
Any news of Neil Innes, Rodney Slater, etc..

| Great to hear that Gorilla is on CD - it implies that others will
follow. Is it released in the UK?
As for Rawlinson End, the LP (& CD yes it exists!!), film and book,
are good, but do not compare to the 10 (approx) 20minute sessions
on the John Peel show, which included (about a year ago) Stanshall's
comeback in "The Great Eating at Rawlinson End", which unlike most
comebacks, I think was the best(iality) of the lot.
I never saw the Bonzos live, though I saw their spinoff "Grimms".
Also, when I was a student, I used to sweep the roads in Kingston,
and remeber sweeping outside Ruskin-Spear's house in Alfred Road,
where I observed his "Giant Kinetic Wardrobe" hanging in the top
bedroom windows, and 2 small children(his?) in the front garden
of this rather unassuming modest house. This was around 1972.
I have to say it, but I still think the Bonzos are great. IN the
early days I seemed to regard them as an English version of Zappa's
Mother's, but without the sarcasm.
Ruskin-Spear did a couple of pretty good LPs, one of which was called
"UNUSUAL", but for me Stanshall is the hero. I think that when teamed
with Innes, the pair made a very underrated song-writing team, with
some real gems especially on "Keynsham" & "Doughnut".
The "Bestiality" compilation on CD also included a gem not previously
available on any LP, called "Ready-mades" - great stuff- why was
it not released before?

| AS far as I know they have never been released from Peel's show,
in any form. The Rawlinson CD is the same as the LP. In fact there
is a 2nd Rawlinson LP with a title concerning "..Kraal..".
One of my favourite "Rawlinson" pieces is the bit where Sir Henry
decides to put his wine-connoisseur guest to the test, by popping
down to the cellar, after dinner, & offering his guest a "special"
glass to identify. After passing a few initial wine-tasting comments,
which also drew attention to the unusually warm temperature of the
"wine", it finally dawned on the guest with horror & ghastly
spluttering, just what it was he had been drinking. Sir Henry responds
with a boozy laugh "...Now you know what it is- Whose is it?"

664.31 | Viv Stanshall alive & kicking! | TRUCKS::CAMPBELL_A | | Thu Nov 28 1991 16:47 | 21 |
| Last night on BBC-2's "LATE NIGHT" programme, there was a special on
Viv Stanshall. They commissioned him (and a group which included Rodney
Slater on brass)to present a musical autobiography (of himself).
It lasted about 20mins. and included a series of songs many of which
were familiar in the "Rawlinson End" episodes, punctuated with
monologue delivered only the the way that Stanshall can do.
Bits were sad, as it transpired that Viv did not get on with his Dad
from a very early age and was eventually disowned by him. One of his
songs parodies his retired Dad as an "armchair" as he was always in it
glued to the TV - a sad song.
As a performer Viv came over as confident and well-polished, which
suprised me when you consider his (previous?) valium/booze addictions.
His voice (his greatest assett) sounds as good as ever, and the backing
band comprised strings, brass, drums etc. & were also good.
Viv (+ band) starts a tour 5th Dec., so check in "Time Out" for dates.

cut-price 3 x cd set.
Each cd (from EMI) comes complete with a comprehensive 10-page booklet of
Bonzo history & info. (each different & complementary to the others
and contains at least 2 full LPs on each. Each cd cost
me 8.49pounds at my local friendly cd shop.
1) "The Intro" contains "Gorilla" & "Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse"
2) "The Outro" contains "Tadpoles" & "Keynsham"
3) "Dog Ends" contains "Lets Make Up..." + 5 or 6 v.early Bonzo tracks
(Temperance -7 style) and also 3 or 4 post-Bonzo solo collaborations
including Viv's "Sean Head Band" featuring Eric Clapton!
The cd covers depict a 60's style scrapbook collage of Bonzo symbols
and imagery.
Not bad value (though unexpected) from EMI!

664.47 | Ruddles & Rawlinson Advert | TRUCKS::CAMPBELL_A | | Tue Aug 24 1993 11:55 | 21 |
| Anyone seen the new Ruddles TV advert?
It's based on Sir Henry at Rawlinson End, and can only be described as
BIZARRE. Sir Henry & entourage are all seated/sprawled around the
manorial banqueting table, which among other things (Ruddles beer?)
supports bowls of bright green gunge into which heads fall. Viv
Stanshall is among the "diners" and does all the voice-overs. The best
bit is where the diners manager to get themselves (somehow!) together
and start rowing with the result that the entire table and diners
proceed to row as one out of the room!
The ad is so weird, that you are hardly aware that its purpose to to
sell Ruddles beer. Maybe they are trying to associate their beer with
English eccentricity, or more likely with being p*ssed out of your
brain! Either way, it's a refreshing change from the previously
prevailing imagery of good-looking/macho/one-of-the-lads.
Alex (I prefer cider, anyway)
PS. It's good to see Stanshall is still alive and sporting a jolly good
"Goatee" beard.
