663.0. "The Enid" by YUPPY::OGLE () Sun Apr 29 1990 11:47
This note is all about Robert John Godfrey and Stephen Stewart,
known collectively as "The Enid". Formed in the mid 70s, they played
a hybrid of rock and classical music which gave them almost a cult
following. After several albums, they played their last concert
at the Dominion Theatre late in 1987, and split up.
Any fans of the band out there?
To bring the story right up to date, Godfrey, who was grossly
overweight and needed to retire from performing, has lost 7 stone,
shaved his head and recruited five youngsters to form a band called
"Enid". This is a COMPLETELY different band from the earlier outfit
and will shock those expecting to hear stuff from the old band.
I went to see them at the Marquee last night and came out shell-shocked
having seen them only once before at that Dominion gig. A new single
is out, "Salome" a reworking of one of their old pieces - should
be interesting if it makes it into the charts!
Julian.

| Can't say I'm a fan but I've seen 'em a couple of times at the Reading
festival. Particularly enjoyed seeing them do "Wild Thing" with
Bernie Torme guesting on guitar and RJG delivering a rather
different vocal style during the song.
When they played the festival in '87 they were previewing a new
album which I never did find out the title of. Anyone happen to
know it? The songs they played had an "African" feel to them.

I do believe that it has called to "the spell".
I met the Enid at there farm/recording studio in Cambridge some years
ago. RJG was even then helping talented teenagers to form a band. They
were the support act for many of the Enid gigs.
