655.0. "The Color Blind James Experience" by DOOZER::NEWELL () Tue Apr 17 1990 18:35
Colour Blind James Experince.
A strange name for a band. And for the once they more than
live up to it. They come from america ,and can play anything from
blues to bluegrass to Polka. I saw them(for the second time) on Good
Friday at the Mean Fiddler.
From the beginning they intrigue.
They are a strange looking lot, all wearing black T-shirts/sweatshirts
and blue jeans. Totally undemonstrative, they just get on and play,
any glance towards the audience is quietly quizical. Their blues
numbers could groove you to death, and alot of bands would be satisfied
just to stick with this.
Instead "Colour blind James" follow a "Walkin'the dog" blues
with a strange spoken ditty reciting the story of Jonah
and the Whale. The instrumentation is clarinet, trombone, lead and
Rhythmn guitar, xylophone, bass, and drums. The leader (who might or
might not be Colour blind James) does vocals,Rhythmn guitar ,xylophone
and wry comment.
Probably their best numbers reflect their cynicism ,and
humour for their own country. A mock anthem "America, America" which mentions
,Burger King, Abe Lincoln, and the AM djs coast to coast."Be True to
your school, like you would to your guy or your gurl","Considering a
move to Memphis" which contains the line: "it worked for Elvis Presley,
why can't it work for me.", and "Buster Cornelius" about the 4' 4" all
american hero. I could go on and on, so I'll shut up. Just go and see
them. Brilliant songs, brilliantly performed.
