I have a bet on with a mate regarding a song. The song is
    called 'Sound of the Suburbs'.

I have said that it was SHAM 69, but they other guy has said THE
MEMBERS. So does anyone know the correct answer?.

Who sang 'SOUND OF THE SUBURBS'.

I think it was the Members, didn't they also do 'off-shore banking
    business'?

Sham 69 were responsible for the first punk concept lp, called,
er........, well, it had Hurry Up Harry on it.

Does anyone remember the single Jimmy Pursey recorded with Peter
    Gabriel, 'Animals Have More Fun'?

I thought the Damned had the first punk LP..

641.9WELMTS::GREENBFri Mar 30 1990 10:1312
I know the Damned had the first punk *single*, which was 'New Rose'.
I wouldn't like to say which punk group had an lp out first, but
I suspect the Clash's debut was possibly the first on a major label.

I was having a bit of a go at the Shams there, when I said they
released punk's first *concept lp*. Wasn't punk supposed to stand
against all this mid-70's self-indulgent tosh??

641.10Theres going to be a Borstal Breakout!!!XSTACY::PATTISONHot on the heels of loveFri Mar 30 1990 11:149

The only Sham 69 song I remember liking was called 'Borstal Breakout'.
I can still remember the live footage shown on OGWT. Does anyone know
if this was a single or an album track? Reading this note reminded me
of it, I'd quite like to get hold of a copy. It has the same 'energy'
as records like the Angelic Upstarts 'I'm An Upstart', another fine
    example (certainly livened up TOTP)

641.11Definately a single - I had it once!GREBO::GURUSuck a Fisherman's FriendFri Mar 30 1990 12:300

Wasn't Borstal Breakout one of their early singles, released before
    their string of hits?

I also remember one of Jimmy Pursey's attempts to break down
musical/youth faction barriers consisted of inviting Steve Hillage
to jam with the band at a Marquee gig once. By all accounts, it
was a bit of a strange experience.

    re. "Hurry up Harry"

If my memory serves me right was'nt the B-side called "No Entry"
and did'nt the lyrics go somrthing like :

"They would'nt let us in the U.S.A.
We did'nt wanna go there anyway"

Jimmy Pursey. A truly awful chap.

    Harry.

641.15Didnt he spot the Cockney Rejects aswell?FORTY2::ETHERIDGEGet back to the sea!!!Fri Mar 30 1990 15:5511
Yeah, but Jimmy sure could write lyrics.

	Exhibit A

	"Come on, come on"
	"Hurry up Harry come on"
	"Were going down the pub"

	Urban drama.

    agggggghhhhh!!

The Cockney Rejects!. Those ugly Geggis brothers who were responsible
    for such gems as:

    "Where the hell is Babylon,
Can I get there on my bike?"

....or along those lines, it's been a long time y'see.

Or that wonderful(?) version of the West Ham anthem "Bubbles".

I remember them becoming a Heavy Metal band ( thanks to certain members
of UFO ) before they thankfully disappeared. Garry Bushell, so much
    to answer for.

    Oi!!

I still get out the old brace of 'Greatest Hits' albums now and again
for a good old pogo. The boys were really raw, and yes I remember that
lyric from "Where The Hell Is Babylon?", incidentally one of their
better songs with a reggae intro.

They went off the rails a bit when Pete Way of UFO got interested.

The bass player Vince also featured in a documentary about West Hams
Inter-City Firm on ITV a few years back, saying why he and his mates
(didnt see any other band members) in footbal violence. In short quite
a pikey collection of 'musicians'. Lots of fun music tho.

641.19About Jimmy PurseyTENERE::LADRETWed Apr 11 1990 09:305
Correct me if I'm wrong but if I remember well Jimmy Pursey did a choregraphy on
"Golden Brown" that he danced in first part of the Stranglers' La Folie Tour.
