| Those artists who seem to forget who they owe there rise to fame to, really
annoy me. Roland Gift - why are you so dour and aloof ? (Having said that I
like Fine Young Cannibals !)
I think the French & Saunders Pop Group sketches sum it all up. Did a good
job of taking Bros off !!.

| A Question: Is it right to release lots of different items, you know,
all these limited editions and poster packs? Is it a rip off, or is it
giving us what we want?
Personally I'm sick of having to buy three 12" for all the mixes of a song.
Why don't they just buying them all on the one 12"? I know the answer
to that!

I'm personally fed up with it.. I like to collect all recordings by my
favourite artists, but in some cases its just not worth it. After all,
the artists themselves often only actually perform stuff ONCE, its the
production team that make up all the different mixes.
Imagine collecting all of Frankie Goes to Hollywood...

I mean why do you want ALL the ltd editions groups put out ? And
why DO they put them out...I suspect close examination reveals a
viscious circle....
Matty, do you imagine that remix no 462 of West End Girls is going
to be valuable or somthing....My advice, stop collecting records,
just listen to the music and enjoy it....Who cares if they will/will
not be valuable in years to come....You are probably not expert
in records enough, and is it worth sitting on a virtually unplayed
record for n-1 years before it rises in value.....

| OK next question:
Should it be crime to put old singles, or LP tracks on b-sides? ex.
Madonna's "I Know It" has been on 3 of her 25 singles. That's a rip
off surely!

I personally can't fathom why a blue vinyl copy of "Bohemian Rhapsody"
is worth fifty times more than a bog standard black one, just because
they only made 250 copies.
If artists want to please their most devoted collectors they should
leave all 45 rpm releases off of albums. This means all their output
becomes 'collectable' and has a value. It also means your not wasting
your money buying recordings you already have.

Just thought of an example...
Joy Division never duplicated recordings, (while they existed). Until
the recent compilation LP released by Factory, early Joy Division
records were very valuable. Now that all these recordings are
available on CD, I doubt if you'd get 50% of the going price 3 years
ago. Now, as a collector, that makes me fairly annoyed.

I'm not sure I see your point... all my pairs of shoes are DIFFERENT.
As far as wear and tear is concerned, play the record once, tape it,
put it in a plastic sleeve, file it away with the rest..

| Dave, The shoes thing is like the different mixes thing. You don:t
need lots of pairs of shoes. You only need 2 pairs of trousers, but we
all like the change, we like to look different from time to time. Just
like I like different mixes, or different covers. I get a big thrill
out of hearing a new mix of something. Like when there's an LP track
that I really like, and I can't wait for it to be a single. Then
you're going to get a long version that you can dance to. I suppose
you either like different mixes or you're a song only matters type.

Different covers? I wonder if you bought all 12 copies of Ian Dury's

How about playing the short version twice?

637.16 | Picture discs not meant for playing ! | WOTVAX::MOOREP | I hate having to balance my cheque book ! | Fri Mar 30 1990 15:44 | 17 |
| I personally don't think there should be any limit to the number of different
formats of the same single. If someone is willing to squander on all possible
editions, then let them. (I do it !)
However what does annoy is when you like a certain 7" in the charts, but you
want to buy something more substantial like the 12" or CDS, and then the 7"
mix doesn't appear on the other formats.
The latest Q magazine reported that some record industry authority was from now
on only going to allow 5 different formats for eligibilty into the charts.
So, after 7", 12", 12" remix, CDS and cassingle, is it going to mean goodbye
to picture discs, boxed singles and freebies ?
Once bought a 12" picture disc which I had to take back as it would not play
because it was so warped. On returning to the shop, I was told "Picture discs
are not really meant for playing" !

The top 500 most collectable artists were published in the April edition
of Record Collector magazine. This was compiled from a readers poll in which
you were invited to list the five artists you are most interested in from a
collectors point of view.
The interesting point about this poll is that the magazine sells to quite
a broad cross section of the record buying public. Every form of popular (and
unpopular) music gets a look in. (By the way this magazine is published in the
UK). Here are the first 30 places:
(Last years position in brackets)
1 (1) The Beatles
2 (4) David Bowie
3 (6) The Rolling Stones
4 (2) Queen
5 (5) Elvis Presley
6 (3) U2
7 (9) Kate Bush
8 (7) Pink Floyd
9 (10) Bob Dylan
10 (26) Prince
11 (21) Jimi Hendrix
12 (20) Paul McCartney
13 (32) Pet Shop Boys
14 (17) The Who
15 (8) Bruce Springsteen
16 (13) John Lennon
17 (38) Madonna
18 (12) Buddy Holly
19 (15) Marc Bolan & T. Rex
20 (18) Jethro Tull
21 (29) Eric Clapton
22 (24) Frank Zappa/Mothers
23 (19) Cliff Richard
24 (23) Led Zeppelin
25 (-) The Stone Roses
26 (11) The Smiths
27 (22) R. E. M.
28 (45) Erasure
29 (28) New Order
30 (16) Genesis
Note: the Beatles scored more than twice as many votes as David Bowie.

matty,
Instead of spending all your hard earned money (and we all know

decks, a fader and a few other things and do it yourself?
I'd be interested to hear the output..

I have a couple of guitars, one electric, one classical, and a consumer
(ie. not pro) keyboards. At present I'm saving (ie. cutting down on
record spending) for a Roland D20 keyboard. Then I want some drums!
I've given myself 2 years (I'll be 22) to either complete a high
quality demo tape, or have a live set put together. Then it's `Look
out world, here I come!'.
This topic is research! I'm not as stupid as my spelling mistake show.
Next question;
Is it ok to play live using sequenced music, ie. with live guitar or
keyboard and vocals over the top, or would I have have to hire people
to gain respect? Answers on a postcard please.

Well, one of the best live bands I've seen are (believe it or not)
SOFT CELL who did more or less what you just described. In fact its
fair to say that their live performances were much *better* than
anything they ever put on vinyl. (Soft Cell, for those who don't
remember, consisted of Marc Almond and Dave Ball). It was, however
impossible to tell what was being played 'live' and what wasn't at
times, but *who cares?*
