| heard the test transmissions on Saturday
& the real thing on Sunday...
I really like it. I'm not a jazz fan, but a mixture of soul/jazz music
was played. Makes a nice change to have it on in the car (& you can get good
reception in Reading)

| Yeah, I'm not a huge jazz fan but they play a variety of jazzy
stuff. The policy is to play anything jazzy regardless of who it's
by. I agree, -1, it's good for the car, especially coming home
after a night out.
There is another radio station coming soon called "Melody Radio"
which will play anything tunefull/restful and melodic! Surprise
surprise! It hasn't been allocated a frequency as yet.
So if you want to get away from the "thud thud" and constant idiotic
chatter of 'chart stations' this might be right up your 'Cul-de-sac'

| Personally, I'm not too keen when they stray into George Benson
type jazz funk (too much like aural wallpaper to me), but I like
a lot of the straighter jazz they play, plus you do get some good
blues material. One good thing - they tend to mix styles a lot,
so you hear a wide range of sounds in a short time.
Having said that, I was wondering if a slot has been allocated for
more, ah, experimental material.

| I agree Bob, there does seem to be a lot of mainstream stuff, but
the blues is wonderfull
Mikef - yes its me, the Crescent refugee - hiding in Queens House,
don't know where I'll be from now on!

| I'm impressed bob, you mean the UK finally is getting FM technology?
Is the BBC still only broadcasting via shortwave or does no one know
because no one listens to it? :-)
yea, now if you can get the station to play some John Mclaughlin stuff
or Sun Ra...or Kenny G.
Did you know if you drink a bottle of cough syrup and listen to Kenny
G, It sounds like John Coltran during his "giant steps" phase?

| Unfortunately, Jay, all the goodness has now been taken out of yer
average bottle of Collis Brown's!!
And yes, we've finally got FM radio here - well, commercial and
local stations have had it for some time, but in the last few months
Wonderful Radio One, Europe's Biggest Radio Station, Number One
Across The Nation etc etc etc has been transmitting on FM; the
advantages of this are obvious. You can now hear Jive Bunny and
inane DJ babble in glorious stereo.

Fortunately, FM (F***ing Mindless) Radio 1 hasn't reached Newbury
yet!
When I does, I'll move.
Anyone know of any OJPs in the Outer Hebribes ?
Andy
PS. Re Jive Bunny - ripping off Gazza and Slade was bad enough but
now the talentless little sh*t is having a go at the Blues Brothers
- is nothing sacred?

626.9 | I need another preset | SUBURB::PULLANR | UpRising at the Castle | Wed Mar 07 1990 14:34 | 7 |
| "To The Manor Born" was dominating the television last night, so
I donned the headphones and tuned in to 102.2 for the first time.
I was most impressed, they played a wide spectrum of stuff from
Sade (sp?) to trad. (I think). I particularly like the "bluesy jazz"
(for the want of better terminology) selections.
Richard.

| All of your radio stations are goverment owned over there?
Ours are not government owned...but you wouldn't know it to listen to
most of them.

626.11 | | BURYST::EDMUNDS | $ no !fm2r, no comment | Thu Mar 08 1990 15:41 | 3 |
| Only BBC stations. There are no national non-government stations yet
(but they're on their way). Local stations are mixed between BBC and
independent.

| Not so far from the truth, as it happens. As well as the national
and local BBC stations, and local independents, there are also quite
a few (illegal) local stations covering very small areas.

| They can and they do, but sometimes it's a bit difficult as the
equipment is small and light enough to be moved around and set up
in different locations for different day's transmissions.

626.16 | Good Jazz Station - In US!?? | ODIXIE::EVANSGR | Aaaacccckkk... | Wed May 08 1991 17:33 | 14 |

Where I am, we also have a problem with finding a good Jazz station
(and I am across the pond!) The only one we have is 102.5, "The Wave" -
very appropriate name! They generally only play generic, mellow,
synthesized stuff. I personally like Herbie Hancock (Piano -
mild/medium Fusion), Chick Corea (Piano - medium Fusion), Elaine Elias
(Brazilian Jazz), Wynton Marsalis (Trumpet - New Orleans/Fusion and
Classical), & my favorite, Harry Connick, Jr. (Swing, New Orleans
style, misc. - quite a pro for only 23 years! His concerts are great! Oh,
he does Piano & vocals (which have been compared with Sinatra's)), just
to name a few.

626.17 | Does anyone listen anymore | JANUS::CWALSH | The Man Who Knew Too Often | Thu Jan 02 1992 13:28 | 11 |
|
Does anyone listen to Jazz FM any more, now that the FM apparently stands for
"Frankly, Minimal".
Could these people be sued under the Trades Description Act? Given that they
obtained the license as a station that played jazz and jazz-related music, is
there any procedure for removing their license now that they no longer play
jazz?

listen to middle of the road crap, thats what Radio 1 is there for.
