| Well, hippies, *my* first gig was (ahem, ahem) Quintessence at the
Woodhall Community Centre, Welwyn Garden City, admission charge
40p, in October of 1970. I followed this with a swift all-nighter
at the Lyceum (Uriah Heep, would you believe), Elton John and Argent
at Hemel Hempstead pavilion (70p) and then joined the Mott The Hoople
unofficial 'go-anywhere-do-anything-just-gotta-see-that-band' brigade.

| John Cooper Clarke - Leisureland, Galway (1978). Well this was one of
the first gigs. Tom Waits in Dublin's Olympia a year later. The Jam and
the Undertones about the same time.
I saw JCC again last year actually - the poor man is STILL doing the
same material ("You never see a nipple in the Daily Express", "Health
Fanatic" etc). And in run-down pubs and clubs. Sad really.

Doncaster April 1987. `Let's Get Brutal' was in the top 20 at the
time. C**p. I listened to the first song, then went off into the
Forum (Different part of same nightclub that plays House music).
Yawn.

would like to, though.....
Bands I've seen are: Level 42, Wet wet wet, Simple Minds,
Curiosity killed the cat, Sade, Prince, Spandau Ballet (lots

right now!!! I'm going to see Simply red (21st March) and
Tears for fears (14th April), I'm really looking forward to these!!!
Cheers!
Have a nice weekend!

624.10 | Early days in Guildford | SUBURB::PULLANR | Process hibernating | Fri Mar 02 1990 18:35 | 17 |
| My first might have been to see Free just before their very final
split, but I told my mate that I wasn't into heavy "hippy" music.
Soon after, I went and bought all their albums. I still kick myself
for not going!
The first gig I went to was Vinegar Joe at Guildford Civic Hall.
This band featured Robert Palmer and Elkie Brooks. The most striking
feature for me (I was a rather virginal fifteen at the time) was
Elkie Brook's tiny mini-skirt riding up over her hips, encouraged
by her provocative dancing. She was somewhat different then, compared
with her solo career.
In those early days, I also saw bands such as Kokomo, Camel (they
were always on at Surrey Uni.), Bad Company, Nazereth, AC/DC, Cozy
Powell's Hammer, Back Street Crawler (post Kossoff's death) and
various bands that have been forgotten by me and probably everyone
else.

| The first real gig I saw is probably the best.
On the occasion of his birthday, around summer '81, Phil Lynott played the
Astoria Ballroom in Bundoran, a small seaside town in Donegal. Scott Gorham
was in the band along with a host of non-Lizzy others.
Although it was announced that he was going to appear (I think Brush Sheils
was scheduled), nobody in the area really believed it, so there was only
about two hundred people there. They played for about two hours, going
through all the Thin Lizzy classics, looking like they were really having a
good time.
Afterwards Phil and the lads came down to the bar for a few pints and talked
to anyone bold enough to approach them.
Sad that Phil's not around any more. At least he seemed to enjoy himself while
he was here.

Hey, I was at this one too! I arrived lateish and without a ticket, so
had to buy from a tout for 8, double the face price. But it wasn't the
"proper" Associates, it was the band Billy Mackenzie put together after
Alan Rankine left. I remember quite enjoying the gig, but where I was
standing at least, the bass and drums were at a punishing level. The LP
he put out at the time wasn't bad and it's incredibly long. I had a
ticket to see the Associates properly in Edinburgh a year or so before
that, but they split up and cancelled the gig on the night.
To contribute to the basenote, the first gig I was ever at took place
in 1975 at the Eden Court Theatre, Inverness. The stars were the Edgar
Broughton band, obscure even then, but it was most unusual for
Inverness to see live music at that time so the place was packed. I had
a seat in a box at the side and remember looking along the lines of the
stalls and noticing that everybody, but everybody, was wearing jeans.
The band were crap.

| Sigue Sigue Sputnik in 1986 (i think) @Cov poly. Support was by Black Elvis,
which was quite good.
Had 3 body checks for weapons etc before being let in!
SSS came on v.late the 'music' was just white noise, Degville stirred the
audience with racial slurs/jokes. The stage lights lit up the fountains of
spit from the audience at the front. Bouncers threw someone off the stage
& into the crowd from their shoulder height (ouch!).
It all ended when someone threw a glass (whiskey) bottle at Degville; this
hit him in the face causing him to storm off.
This was seen as a signal for the drummers to thow their sticks at the crowd
(they seemed to have a couple of box fulls).
Last I saw was their coach being attacked outside the union building!
It was quite a fun night out actually!!!

Unfortunately i think he had kicked the bucket by then ...a BIG pity.
However, the Roundhouse was the best venue in London in its day...

I remember Robert King (singer, I think) had a snake painted on his
face that night. TV21 were on the same bill along with some lesser
known bands, maybe 6 in all. In fact, New Apartment were there too..
their singer wore John Lennon style shades and jumped around a lot.
Most people went to see TV21 I think but the Scars outshone everyone
else by a long way. What happened to them, anybody know?

| First gig was seeing The Rolling Stones at the "Empire Pool", Wembley
(as it was called then) in September 1973, with two support bands.
Kracker were the first band to be signed to the Stones own record
label. It's so long ago now, I can hardly remember what sort of
music they played or how good they were, but next on was Billy Preston
and his "God Squad" who were really good. He had a single "Will
it go round in circles" in the charts at the time and went down
a treat with everybody. The Stones played over two and a half hours
covering material from 1968 up to their newly released "Goats Head
Soup" L.P. Album stickers were given out at concert, and I've kept
a few of them to this day - I remember sticking one of these on
the front of my rough book at school! The show finished with Jagger
throwing buckets of water over the front rows of the audience.
Afterwards we waited outside to see them all being driven away in
their respective cars, and saw all the band less Mick Jagger being
whisked away quickly keeping very low profiles although Charlie
Watts did look up at us.
Ah, such a long time ago!
Julian.
