617.0. "Should I sell my records?" by SHAPES::BROWNM (Me when I'm in, Him when I'm out!) Tue Feb 27 1990 17:40

I want to buy some music making equipment, guitar, keyboard, amps,
portastudio, Atart 1040, software, mic, etc.

All this costs a fortune, and I can only afford say the guitar, or the
keyboard at present, so could you give me some advice? I could
sell my record collection, which at best will give most of the rest.

I think I might regret selling my records, even if I tape the music. I
have loads of limited editions, rarities etc and enjoy collecting.
It's just that it takes up loads of money and hunting round for stuff.

The question is, has anyone out there ever sold, for any similar
purpose? Did you regret it? What happened?

On no account sell any of your records ever!!

At the age of sixteen Id built up quite a good collection, but went
through a cash crisis where I sold them all to various people. I now
miss all those classics I had as a youngster so don't do it, its not
worth the regret. I could kick myself.

Theres an upside to this story though. I bumped an old mate from school
and he said 'Remember all those records you sold me?' I said 'Yeah can
I buy them back?' to which he replied 'You can have 'em mate!'

Ill get them back soon. Triffic.

	So dont do it!

	Ian.

I could tape everything twice, once for listening to and a backup copy.
It would mess up any ambitions I have about becoming a DJ, but getting
    those instruments seems more important.

    shopping ??

Will you let us know ??

    Tim, I'm not too sure I know what you mean.  Hope this is the answer;

If I sold 'em I would stop hunting for all theses limited editions and
remixes and just buy LP's and the odd 12". Hopefully there should be
enogh music out there to get by. It's just all the obscure remixes and
versions and usually better and worth having. Every now and then I
suppose I'd tape the records I had and then sell them. What I used to
do was buy a 12", tape it, then take it back saying it was the wrong
one and they'd give me another! I might resort to that again.

I personally wouldn't sell, just try to cut down on your spending and
save up! you could probably pick up some of the gear you want second-
hand a lot cheaper...Anyway if you do decide to sell, let me know.

If I do sell I'll advertise on here first. But I will probably take
ages to make my mind up. I think I would sell if I could get rid of
the lot at their worth, but I could see myself being left with a third
of them and only part return on the ones I sold.

    Re .7

You've got it Matty. If you try and sell your *collection* you
will end up a) NOT getting full value's worth in return...you will
have to sell at cost_price(including some collectors items that
you held on to!) and b) you will NOT sell all...and so will be left
with say 25% of your original collecting, reminding you where the
    other 75% went!

Advice;- As someone mentioned earlier cut down on your present *buy*
policy...get your new stuff on HP(loan whatever) and pay back over
say a couple of years! ALSO...I think you mentioned getting several
    items of equipment/instrumentation?...getting musical instruments
etc all at once is a BAD idea. You end up dabbling in all and becoming
master of none!.Best get them one piece at a time and as you progress
(get up to speed...luv DECspeak :-) incorporate or move on to a
new item. You can build-up your musical instrument collection just
like one can build-up thier Hi-Fi.

Finally...you mentioned moving location. So I figure it would be
a bad time to start landing out more cash...unless of course you are
    getting a BIG *relocation* :-)

    Rgds.,

617.9Thanks for the adviceSHAPES::BROWNMAll is not enoughWed Feb 28 1990 16:0128
Dave, I am getting relocation expenses. So after 3 months I should be
able go and spend 1000 cash on a Roland D20 and practice amp. I will
be earning more, paying out less living costs and I've just finished
paying for my fishing tackle (2000 worth), I'm unattatched and plan to
stay that way for a while intil I have a home studio/setup (A good
excuse for being an ugly oik), I can't drive. ie. I have as much funds
as I could expect for a teenager.

I don't want to commit myself to paying out dosh for 2 years. Also I
want to learn, write & play live while I'm still young. I've wasted
enough time already, so the sooner the better. If I want to get into
the charts, and I do, then I have to start climbing the ladder asap.
Most bands don't get anywhere, the rest don't break overnight, and I
want to get the apprenticeship started.

As for buying everything at once. What happens if I have a few good
tracks on disc, but have nothing to make a demo on. I need the basics.
If I bought a keyboard, but not a guitar then I can only record the
one, leaving limited in posible creativity.

All I have at present is a 200 keyboard, classical guitars and a tape
recorder. It's just completely different what you can do with pro
    stuff.

I'm confused and I thank you for the advice.

617.10My 2ps worth...SHAPES::STREETRLife is just a bowl of chilliWed Feb 28 1990 16:2414
I have been holding back here Matty as I am twice your age....
however I can (just) remember being in similar situations in my
    teens.....
My initial reaction to 'should I sell my records' was NO....then
I thought, well how about weighing up what you really like or
believe will be 'collectible' in the future (speculation here) and
keeping those, and (shh) record the rest and sell them on....
I think DaveKs advice was very sound.... I can understand your
impatience to do it all, (we all always want more than we can have).
but it all boils down to priorities..... whatever you do, I reckon
you will always have some kind of regret in the future...thats life!

    Ray.

617.11All these 2ps worth and I can save up!SHAPES::BROWNMAll is not enoughWed Feb 28 1990 16:439
I wouldn't have any regrets if I thought I did the right thing. As for
predicticting what's going to become collectable - a large percentage
of it. If I didn't sell my collectables I'd only end up with about a
fifth of the value of the total.

I'm becoming defensive! My conscience would kill me if I sold!

    Matty,

you were saying something about a demo...

I can get tracks cut onto acetate from tape if you want. It won't
be very expensive, max of 10 per 12 inch.
Mail me if you are interested and I will get the details to you.

617.13Thanks for the offerSHAPES::BROWNMAll is not enoughWed Feb 28 1990 17:0811
It'll be months yet (like at least 6).

I've got to save up, buy a keyboard, learn what the buttons do, write
something and record it. 6 months max!

Out of interest, can you play an acetate on a turtable? I've seen them
on sale in Record Collector for high prices. Another question: What
exactly do you do next with the acetate? ie. Do you just take them to
a firm and get it copied to vinyl?

617.14Heavier than vinal; blacker; softer and more chewy!PEKING::BUSHNELLJPedanticity is my middle nameMon Mar 05 1990 12:4046
    Matty,

An acetate is basically like a normal vinal record but there are
    a lot of special conditions:-

    	* it doesn't last as long...usually about 100 plays

    	* the sound track is _cut_ into the acetate instead of being
    	  pressed like a record.

    	* it is generally used for illegal copying of v. rare records
that can no longer be found on issue so it can be played by
    	  DJ's at clubs, etc.

    	* it is a hell of a lot cheaper than getting a record pressed
(without the aid of a company) but due the short life and
time involved in making acetates, they are not suitable for
	  mass production.

The reason why I suggested them was that if you got a record written
and on acetate, you could give some to DJs at clubs, etc and get
    yourself some airplay (hopefully!).

A lot of acetates are very expensive due to their lifespan/rarity
value/their content. eg, a friend of mine bought an acetate by Gary
Numan a few days ago. It is white acetate and only a few where made
(around 1000 I think). He paid 70 for it and it is already worth
    140!

If you ever think of buying one, make sure it is authentic though
(this one had a letter of authenticity) as if it has not, you might
be getting ripped off and also ripping off the artist by buying
    an illegal bootleg.
You can get prosecuted for it too!

BTW: Yes, you do play acetates on turntables (if I didn't mention
    it already)

If you are planning on getting your sounds released nationally or
even just locally, it will cost you a lot of money so your best
bet would be to try for a contract I guess. Don't take my word for
it though, I'm no professional! ;^)

    Cheers

I sold all my stuff over the last 2 years cos I was totally peeved off with the
sound of vinyl, especially the sound of all the old 7" singles. I've not
regretted the fact yet ... the stuff I sold fetched big bucks at some shops
which enabled me to purchase loads of CDs.

So my advice is ... sell, sell, sell .... luverly!
