579.0. "Now Albums" by AYOV18::MBONE (If it moves FFfffunk it) Wed Jan 10 1990 12:12

    Hi,
It's been a long while since I last noted in UK_Music, anyway
I was looking for thoughts on the market of compilation Albums,
like the NOW albums, what are your thoughts on this material, Is
it worth it's price, the following problems I have found with them
    are as follows:

    1. Very pricey 10

    2. Repetitve

    3. Fails to give a good sound level, i.e. for Disco's

    4. Won't hold it's value.

    5. Just like a Pringle Jumper.

    Give your thoughts or feedback.

    Hi Martin,

Are you restricting this just to NOW compilations?

I have found a really good set of Soul Compilations called "The
Northern Soul Story [Enter a number here]". Don't buy these though
unless you are into Northern Soul as they contain 20 year old, unknown
artists singing songs you would think are ridiculous (Well, that's
what most people say about what I listen to!).

They give an Excellent sound level, Are extremely cheap (around
    10) for the value of the records in them (into thousands of pounds).

I think it is a common fault with Compilations that they Don't hold
their value...mainly because they are looked down opon by the record
collecting population. The albums need to be in excellent condition,
have a great track listing and need to be pretty rare to be worth
    *anything* above retail price.
The point you make on the records on NOW compilations being repetitive
is I think more a comment on the music standards of today. Don't
    you?
Not sure about the Pringle Jumper!

    Cheers,

    James

Often the sound quality on compilations is awful, and the tracks have
been edited. This seems to be true of comps around one artist as well
    as the Now variety.

Yo! James ma man, I am doing fine, how's yerself, thanks for
the input, should help a great deal, you see I am finding it hard
to scrape up the pennies(Pounds) for records, so it seems a better
idea to use compilation albums for Dj'ing.

BTW I love Soul music, anything that has a dance effect on me, I
like really, but Soul is No 1 on my list.

Any others would be great, if you know of any.

BTW all the old Boring guy's are in a new conference called
    Conversation, full entry is RITZ::CONVERSATION.

Ok, I admit it; I actually own TWO Now Albums!

Mind you, I haven't bought such a product for a couple of years now,
but every so often, by pure coincidence, there happens to be a number
of highly passable tunes out as singles. The likelyhood of this
unusual event occurring at the present time (IMHO) is very small. I
actually bought Nows 2 and 6 (says a lot for my tastes in music). They
represented music from artistes who had produced a good (for me)
one-off single. I almost certainly would not have wanted to buy
an album's worth of their songs. Incidentally, I found that side
4 contained all the disco/soul stuff that didn't interest me, which
meant that I did not have to dart about the record to hear the good
    stuff.

Every now and again, I buy samplers-especially if they are going
cheap. It's an interesting way to open up your musical horizons...

Warner Bros, Virgin, Island, Immediate, EMI have all issued interesting
samplers in their time. I'm sure there are many others.

There are some good samplers around. Highly recommended are the Blue
Notes sample albums, costing only #1.99, with a good selection of jazz
tracks from the label, albeit slighly edited. There were also some R+B
samplers from Chess going cheap, which are well worth finding.

I didn't know where else to put this !

Is there a good compilation album out at the moment?

I'm sure I saw one advertised somewhere that had some "decent"
dance tracks that were fairly up-to-date.
I'm mixing a complete set of party tapes (non-stop/mixing/fade-ins)
and need to get some recent stuff. The idea is to update them as
time goes on, but still mixing old with new.

Any ideas, (or suggestions on tracks that I *MUST* include!)?

    Regards,

    David.

>> Is there a good compilation album out at the moment?

I realise that this note began as NOW compilations but if you are after
`party' music (not recent though) "The Two-Tone Story" which is the
best of English ska from (mostly) about ten years back is good good for
    parties/dancing.

    Tracks include:

Too much Too Young - The Specials
    Ghost Town - " " " "
    Blank Expression - " " " "
    The Prince - Madness
On my Radio - The Selecter

    ...and about 10 others.

    - Tim

PS I should mention that "The Boiler" definitely is *not* party music.

    re:> 159.6,

There is a compilation album out called 'Brothers in Rythem', which
    includes some of the following:

The Jackson 5 ..... 'I want you Back'
Average White Band..'Let's go Round Agian'
Detriot Spinners....'Working My Way Back To You'
    O'Jay's.............'The Backstabbers'
    Was not Was.........'Walk The Dhinosaur'
The Drifters........'Kissing In The Back Row'

Is this the style of music your looking for Dave?.

Good boogie compilations are the 'Urban' label collections, some James
Brown stuff, plus friends of JB, including Maceo and the Macks (Across the
tracks - essential for geting on down at parties).
