Oh what joy ... on my doorstep this morning was a copy ofthis illustrious video.
Guess what I'm going to be doing tonight ... that's right, decorating!
497.5Got out of the decoratingGREBO::GURUNuclear War is a load of ballisticsTue Dec 05 1989 09:2616
So I watched the video (or most of it) last night ... up to Spacemen 3, the
highlights (and I wish Bruce was here to see this!) was the James video, pure
delight ... I lurved it, hot on it's heels was the Morrisey vid ... another gem
with schoolboys in high heels ... then the Band of Holy Joy/Wedding Present
came a close third in the highlights ... surely the Bruce Influence hasn't
rubbed of somehow.

Although the whole video is worth having there are certain tracks on it which
get the fast-forward treatment ... mainly THUG (utter garbage), Napalm Death
their first track lasts approx 2 seconds, with the next lasting around the 20
second mark, and the last which must have taken weeks to write lasts maybe a
minute (in all 3 tracks not one recognisable word is sung/spoken/screamed), and
lastly Extreme Noise Terror ... lots of YORGHS screamed in a microphone just
isn't my cup of tea!

Has anyone else got the video yet?

I hear the video has arrived at my postal address (us jet sets need such things)
My only problem now is that I haven't got round to buying a video player yet.

Anybody know of a cheap video going anywhere???

I picked up Indie Top Video Vol. 1 last night, seems it's the best of videos
from those albums that get released called "Indie Top 20", you know the ones!

Anyway this has 15 tracks on it ... New Order - 'Fine Time', Birdland - 'Hollow
Heart', PWEI - 'Can U Dig it', Fields of the Neph - 'Preacher Man', Wedding
Present - 'Why are you Being So Reasonable Now' (my wife's fave Weddoes track!),
The Shamen - 'Jesus Loves Amerika', plus Loop, Danielle Dax, and I've forgot the
other 7 artists at the moment.

It cost 9.99 out of Virgin, and there is a Vol 2 out also ... but 7 of them are
on the CND/NME video ... worth buying for 'She Bangs the Drums' though!

Those funny mop-top boys in Birdland are beginning to grow on me, I must say!
497.8Not a video - double LP/tape/CD....AYOV18::DROBBTorn between the light and darkTue May 15 1990 11:392
Has anyone bought (or heard) NME's latest compilation, THE LAST
    TEMPTATION OF ELVIS? Any comments?
497.9HYEND::SCHILTONWhen they said sit down,I stood upTue May 15 1990 14:288
I've heard two cuts from it and thought both were ok. Bruce's
Viva Las Vegas is getting a lot of air-play over here and I've
also heard Paul McCartney's It's Now or Never (or was it Are You
Lonesome Tonight...liked it so much, I've forgotten what it was!).

How's the rest Dougie, have you heard the whole thing?

    Sue and Dougie,
I've got and it's a very pleasant listen. I'll try to remember
to bring it in tomorrow for the track listing. Most of the artists
do a creditable job but one stands out for me-

The Primitives do Baby you're so Square (but I don't care) and it
sounds so much like its one of their songs and not an Elvis cover.
Most of the rest sound like cover versions.

    Cheers,
    	George

Not just a track listing but a review too!

First off, profits go to the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre in
London which uses music to try to help autistic children. They've
raised over #350,000 so far.

All songs are from Elvis' movies but may not have been sung by the
King originally.

It's a double cassette, but at 16; 23; 23; and 20 minutes, would fit
on a C90. The over 6 minutes of dead air at the end of side 1 is poor
composition. The production quality is superb.

Side one-
Bruce Springsteen- Viva Las Vegas: I don't especially like the Boss
and this was one of the weaker tracks for me.
Sydney Youngblood- Let me be your TeddyBear: Elvis soundalike. Done
	A Capella. Pleasant.
Tanita Tikaram- Loving You: Does she ever sing on key? Yucch.
Robert Plant- Let's Have a Party: Starts off with a wonderful pedal
steel guitar and then rocks out. Should've had the second half
done by the Stray Cats. Not bad, though.
The Pogues- Got a lot o'livin' to do: Shane mumbles away as usual
	but it's jangly good fun.
Holly Johnson- Love Me Tender: I love the original. A truly classic
slow dance. Holly's voice is sweet enough but he does it
	up-tempo. Yucch.

Side two-
Paul McCartney- It's now or never: Time warp back to 1962 and the
Quarrymen. His voice is a bit older, but I bet they could have
sounded just like this at the Cavern.
Dion DiMucci- Mean Woman Blues: Dion should stick to R&R and not R&B.
Bonnie Raitt or Ray Charles would do this justice. He has a
good guitarist (Johnny Sambataro) in back, though.
The Jesus and Mary Chain- Guitar Man: The first of the 'hard' songs.
Especially after the sweetness of Macca and Dion, the Reid
brothers are like a hit of smelling salts. WAKE UP! The song
sounds more like a Dylan cover, though. Who is the "Reed" it's
	credited to?
Cath Carroll & Steve Albini- Kid Creole: This will keep you awake.
	Nice guitar.
Aaron Neville- Young and Beautiful: Back to sleep. Syrupy nightclub
stuff. He thinks he's Johnny Mathis. I'd have like to have
heard Rickie Lee Jones on this one.
Vivian Stanshall & the Big Boys- There's no room to rhumba in a
sport's car: Inspired! Viv has Keith Miller, Tim Stone, Rob
Burns, Francis Serlau and Stephan Stapley join him on this fun
	romp.
The Primitives- (You're so square) baby I don't care: Like I said last
reply-this is a Primitives song surely. If you like this, get
	their albums.

Side three-
Hall & Oates- Can't help falling in love with you: Another beautiful
	ballad ruined. Motown upbeat version.
The Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra- Crawfish: Never heard of this band
before, but I'm gonna hear more! Their band name sums up how
	they sound.
Ian McCulloch- Return to sender: Liverpudlian 1964 back-up band with
Ian's ethereal vocal. (I was going to say echoing vocal). He
could also sing on key better. Grows on me.
Fuzzbox- Trouble: Fast forward. Suzi Quatro did a *much* better job on
this song. Fuzzbox do it on valium.
The Hollow Men- Thanks to the Rolling Sea: Is this Roddy Frame under
another guise? I could have sworn this was Aztec Camera.
	Great stuff.
The Blow Monkeys- Follow that dream: Nice bass. I'd give it an 85.
	(Old American Bandstand joke.)
Lemmy & the Upsetters with Mick Green- Blue Suede Shoes: Inspired
choice number 2. You'll be glad it's the end of the side so
you can catch your breath. Blue Speed Shoes is closer.

Side four-
Nanci Griffith and the Blue Moon Orchestra- Wooden Heart: Country
schmaltz. Back to sleep. Pretty voice, but too much contrast
(even for me) from the previous song.
The Jeff Healey Band- Down in the alley: Key to the Highway take 2.
Listen to Derek and the Dominoes instead.
The Cramps- Jailhouse Rock: Inspired choice number 3. Nanci and Jeff
were there just so you wouldn't get a heart attack by
listening to Lemmy and the Cramps back to back. Sounds like
an electric chair is the instrument being played by Poison
	Ivy.
Les Negresses Vertes- Marguerita: Another good choice. They do it in
French, with a Latin accordian. Interesting. Les Negresses
Vertes are an acquired taste, and this might be the song
	to acquire the taste from.
Pop Will Eat Itself- Rock-a-hula-baby: The 12" remixed dance sample
version. If you buy 12" records, you'll more likely like this.
	I do and did.
Elvis- King of the Whole Wide World: The King himself on the last cut.
Two false starts and then he shows why all those other folks
would cover his songs. He sings rings around all the rest of
the tracks. This should cause kids who haven't heard Elvis
sing and buy the tape for some other artist to go out and buy
some of Elvis' records/tapes/discs. The best cut.

You've got to be able to handle wild mood swings on sides three and
four. All in all worth a buy even if it weren't for charity.

So far, only on sale through NME that I know of.

Cheers,
	George
