The album is Camembaert Electric. The only other CD I've seen about
is a comp. of the best bits from Shamahl, Guzzers (sp?) and one
other album who's name escapes me.
There's a few CDs out by Allen Holdsworth who played guitar on a
number of the later albums and also plenty of material by Here &
Now who back David Allan on the Live 77(Floating Anarchy) album.
Nice to see some fellow Pot-Head Pixies out in DECland

| Hey
here is another Gong fan materialised from mother nature!!
The other >CD< is Magik Brother which is pretty dam good, I have
some old gong bootlegs of thier gigs in 72. Do you know Daevid Allan
is doing some meditation weekends for selected few, but funny enough
he does not talk about Past Gong antics. I luv Angels Egg and Flying
Teapot albums and most of thier other stuff, the band itself has
split up but they are doing thier own material.
Some of the old gong albums go for a lods a mony, I know this matey
who is even more crazy about gong than myself, who has all the albums
and bootlegs and CD's the lot...
Do you know the Gong Trilogy??
One Radio Gnome tuning off and flying to Planet Gong!!

I wasn't aware that Mike Oldfield had actually been a member of
Gong at any time, but there is a connection there. At one time Mike
was a member of Kevin Ayers' group, The Whole World. At a later
time, Kevin Ayers toured using Gong as his backing group.
Both this version of Gong, and the band that recorded Camembert
Electrique were in the days before Steve Hillage was part of the
group.

Gong as I thought he went solo after leaving Kevin Ayers. Was the Kevin
Ayers/Gong band called Archibald?
One ex-Gong member I used to know was Brian Davison (ex Nice amongst
others). Can't remember any discs he may have been on, but it was
around '76-77.
Thinking back, didn't Virgin release a Gong album for 50p years ago?
Come to think of it, I may even have it....being a vinyl junkie makes
you a sucker for that sort of bargain.

re Archibald - Kev's bass player from about 1972 on was called Archie
Leggett, could you be thinking of him?
Talking of really cheap lps, does anyone remember/own that other
classic Virgin release, The Faust Tapes?

Yes, and I'll wager it sells for more than the original asking price

BTW, the cover is a painting by Brigit Reilly. If you really want

487.26 | Glidding in America | PSYLO::WILSON | Why Can't I Be You? | Mon Aug 13 1990 18:40 | 29 |
| Hi,
I'm in America, and years ago I had the European pressings of _Camembert
Elctrique_, _Angel's Egg_, _Continental Circus_, _Fish Rising_,
_Flying Teapot_, and _You_.
All I have now is the _Angel's Egg_ CD, and it's great! A lot of the
detail that I never heard on vinyl really comes out...GOOD JAZZ!
In "I Never Glid Before" Allen is in both channels. In the right he's
the proper, bourgeois gentleman saying things like "I COULD have glid
before...I don't think I ever...what is 'glidding,' anyway?"
Yeah, what IS glidding?
In the left channel he makes puns ("before...three-four, five-four,
six-four...aummmmmmmmmmm....").
"It's a hassle you know, to make rocket ships go to infinity."
(Followed by scale fuzz guitar solo from Hillage.)
I really like Hillage's work on this one; excellent solo on "Glid."
"Prostitute Poem" is good also; part of it is spoken in French...followed
by a cheap pub song...good contrast there between the complexity of the
prostitute and the cheapness with which she's viewed. Gong could be
serious at times, I think. I find them really funny and incredibly
unique, at least when Allen was in the band.

unlike a less frantic version of some of the wild stuff Syd Barrett
used to do.

Gong were a bunch of drug-crazed hippies, glidding had druggy
connotations, too.

| I'd love to find _Continental Circus_ on CD. That one was on
Phillips, though; not on Virgin. I'm glad I have the vinyl.
"Time is your life...time is your world...just you and your bike...and
you're all alone..."
And there's a cool "voice collage" with motorcycle sounds mixed in
with glissando guitar. Allen really rocks out on that one!
Anyone ever see the film? (Supposedly, CC is a film soundtrack.)

487.32 | TRIBUTE anyone | HAM03::BRUEHL | TALK TO ME | Tue May 07 1991 09:56 | 35 |

Hi Folks,
have just read the Gong Note. I do like this band a lot.
There are the following albums, I can remember:
Expresso I
Expresso II
Downwind
Leave It Open
Live
Time Is The Key (the best?)
Breakthrough
There're a lot more older ones, I can't remember and I didn't have.
Pierre Moerlen's Gong splitt up in 1986. Pierre, than joined a Swedish
Band called TRIBUTE (one of the best bands, I think). They did two
fantastic albums and propably one Live Album, which I haven't seen yet.
I have seen Gong a few times. And I've seen Tribute a few times more.
In 1989 Gong was reformed with Pierre on Drums, Percussion and
Keyboards. There are also all Tribute musicians on the Breakthrough
album. So it sounds a little bit like Tribute. But very good.
In 1989 Tribute splitt up. I do not know why. And I haven't any news
since the Breaktrough album and the followed tour.
All in all Gong is a great band (if they still playing together) and
Tribute was also shaped by Gong's music through Pierre Moerlen's
influence.

487.34 | Mother Gong | PSYLO::WILSON | I know Syd Barrett's address... | Wed Oct 30 1991 17:58 | 20 |
| I just read a review in a local newspaper (The Boston Globe),
describing a review of a band called "Mother Gong."
Gilli Smythe is the leader of this band, and their performance was
described as something like "music, poetry, and a celebration of the
femininity and earth mother spirit in both men and women."
A rotund Mother Gong buddy, a poet called "Tom the Poet" opened for
them. They played in a small, small venue in Cambridge, MA, a church
or something.
I take it they're called "Mother Gong" 'cause Gong is still around.
Oh, BTW Bobby Calvert plays the sax for Mother Gong. He played with the
space-rock band Hawkwind for a while.
Their sound was described as "jumpy at times, yet also spacey and
cerebral," with guitar and synth effects. "Uplifting for the mind and
the spirit."
|
487.35 | ! | PSYLO::WILSON | I know Syd Barrett's address... | Wed Oct 30 1991 18:10 | 6 |
| Whoops...the article _does_ mention a Robert Calvert on saxophone, but
I was told that a Robert Calvert of Hawkwind has been deceased for a
few years. The article didn't mention Hawkwind, so this has to be
another Robert Calvert. :-) Either that, or the reporter was given
bogus information...

I think the last time Mother Gong were in Boston was in '79. I
wasn't really familiar with them but I heard a bit of them on 'ZBC
and I ran across some folks at In Your Ear records who suggested not
missing them. Speaking of Hawkwind I anticipated a sound similar
to them but just the same I enjoyed them. They said they'd be back
next year. They played at <forget name> church across from Mystery
Train records in Cambridge.
I can't recall the local story teller who also opened for them who
was quite interesting too.
