| They have another live release called "Reel to reel", which I am told
is good but I haven't heard it. As for studio releases, there have been
quite a few; my favourite is "Misplaced Childhood", but I haven't heard
all the others... I'm sure you can get them in the US, but if not, let
me know (by mail) - I expect to be in LKG in a couple of weeks time.
They do admit that Genesis is an influence by the way. I think they
have been together five+ years.

| I go along with Keith on "Misplaced Childhood" - good album, once you
get away from the commercial first few 'tracks'... For some real,
unadulterated Marillion, try "Fugazi" - much more raw! I think there's
another decent album called "Script for a Jester's tear" (I last heard
it 3-4 years ago...) which you might be able to get a hold of.
Happy hunting - and well worth the effort!

Re. last few....
Funny you should mention the Genesis influence, I remember reading
an article on Fish and the band in one of the music rags around the
time of the "Invisible Touch" tour. He mentioned that Genesis had
approuched them about a support slot on their UK leg of the tour
but Fish declined saying that people would only watch Marillion
in the hope of seeing what Genesis used to be like.
BTW "Script for a Jester's tear" is the first and IMO the best of
the album releases to date.

I worked at a venue in St Albans, where Marillion did one of
there early gigs, and as soon as they started playing the audience
started yelling "SUPPER'S READY SUPPER'S READY !!" (A Genesis
track/album?) They were none too pleased at this, and eventually
left the stage, digusted. Fish was quoted in a music mag soon after
as saying they would never play in St Albans again. (Not a bad thing
either)

Fish left the band about a year ago.
The last studio LP is Clutching at straws (1987) including single-hit
Incommunicado.
The last LP from Marillion is a live one (I don't know the name, may be
it's the one from .0 )
There is another short-live-LP (about 25 minutes). I have to look
up for the name of this LP tomorrow.

| Hi guys just thought that I would add my little contribution to
this note.Yes your all right Fish left approximately 6 mounths ago
due to "Dissagreements on the way forward of the Band".They have
a new Lead singer (who's name I cannot remember yet....obviously
not as easy to remember as "Fish").
The good news is that there is a tour planned for here in the
U.K. for the end of this year (December etc..Fot all those intrested
in going to a gig near London, the Venue is Hammersmith Odeon on
Monday December 18th..the Bad news is that ALL tickets from official
sources are sold out already. You could try your luck from the touts
on the door.
We wait with bated Breath to hear if the new Guys Vocals are
as strong as some of the Big man himself.
There is rumour of a new album out Late this year maybe the December
gigs will be the first official airing of the new material.
For those Intrested, the most recently available was a Double album
called "LA GAZZA LANDRA" or if you want it in English...The Thieving
Magpie. This album is a live recording of some of the concerts ,and
I belive if you have a good Sterio and close your eyes the Music
begins to move you into the Concert atmosphere!!!!!!
Also there is now a collection of Videos available here in
the U.k Ranging from the very early stuff to the most recent one
"Live from Lorely"-recorded live at Lorely in Germany..
I hope this answer's some questions that some of you may have had;
and if you want some intresting reading there is a book (one of
the many books telling the story of the band) just called
"Marillion" and I must admit it provides some good reading into
the history of the band
If any of you fancy,I have the address of the fan club if you
want any extra info...
Hope to speak to some of you soon or maybe see you at one of
the gigs

| Hi,
A major Marillion fan here . I saw Marillion approx. 2o times between
1982 and 1987 , including gigs at pubs , concert halls , and softball
pitches (twice at theMilton Ketnes bowl . They were brilliant every
time .
My favourite gig was at the Reading Top Rank in April '82 - 300
people , max. , but it was incredible . I was right at the front
breathing pure dry ice all evening . Was anyone else there?
I think Fish was the inspiration behind the band , I don't think
anyone will be able to carry off singing his songs . So . Watch
out for Fish's stuff , Marillion (sadly) are now just a group of
extremely talented musicians with no leader .

Another fan here....!
IMHO, 'Script...' is the best studio album. For those in the
US, I'm sure I saw it in CDSWAP at a reasonable price.
Fish is replaced by a short guy (called Steve Hogarth, I think.)
Apparently he used to be in a band called 'The Europeans' -
I'd be interested if someone has heard any of that material.
They'll be releasing a single in September-ish time, and album
following called 'Season's End'.
I have to admit that it seems unlikely that Steve H will be
able to give the band the direction & lead that Fish supplied, but
remember Fish only wrote the lyrics - the rest of the band wrote
ALL the music. Talent is not in shortage.
Having said all that, the 'new' band have played a few secret
gigs, and I've heard a few reports from the recording studio's,
and so far have heard little criticism.
The Fish solo album, due *soon* is to be titled 'Virgil In The
Wilderness Of Mirrors' (!!). Now THAT will be interesting.
BTW, have any other fans noticed the way the band/rec company
seem to be pretending 'Clutching...' never really existed, instead
pushing 'Misplaced Childhood'? Or is it just my imagination?
Consider that the ENTIRE M.Child. set appeared on Thiev Magpie,
the single from Thieving Magpie consisted of Freaks/Kayleigh/Childhoods
End/White Feather..... that C.A.S. has been reduced to 'budget'
price (ie. 7.99 on CD?). Why? I really liked CAS! It had an individual
edge that Misplaced... seemed to be short of.
That'll do for now... any questions welcome!

I've seen Marillion 3 times in my area (south est of France) and they were great.
I really prefered the 1st show (Fugazi tour) when Fish would came on stage with
his face painted. My favorite CD is "Script..." followed by "Misplaced...". As
live album, I would recomend "Real to Reel" which is older and better specially
on CD as it's 52' long (don't think the disk is that long). Note also the
"B side ..." is a very long CD (I think 63') and that each of the (previously
unreleased on album) single on it is excelent (I love "Grendel")
I'm waiting for the next Marillion. I'm not sure I'm waiting for the next Fish
event as he pretended he wanted to go back to Scotish folk songs (?).
I also read that Marillion did some gigs in North-Europe with Pete Tralavas
(bass) on vocals and received few complaints.

to say that I saw "Marillion" on TOTP last night , and thought it
was terrible . I closed my eyes to just listen to the song without
having to watch this new guy . OK , so the musicianship's still
there , but what was the song supposed to be ? It sounded for all
the world like some ditty Jon Bon Jovi wrote while shaving his legs!
Marillion *were* an innovative band with some style , now they just
seem to be another rock band producing standard songs with the usual
format and an over-repeated chorus line . Still , I'll buy the album
and give it a chance , but it has to be said that I'm looking forward
to the new Fish album a lot more .

Andy ,
I have to admit that I don't mind the single itself - I actually
quite enjoy some Bon Jovi now and then - it's just that Marillion
used to produce songs that "meant something" (awful phrase I know)
instead of just rock songs , and I suspect that is why I find myself
hating it . Mind you , you're absolutely right about the haircut...

| (a sigh of relief)--I'm glad to see that there are other people
out there who know what real music sounds like - Marillion is the
best band ever (is that IS, or WAS?!?), right along-side Pink Floyd.
The band was not out for fame and fortune, rather Fish's lyrics
preached against it. Every member of the band was (is) world-class,
and I hope both Fish and the new band keep up with their brilliant
exression of how they deal with life...Make sure you guys keep this
topic up to date with info., as being fairly young (21), I am an
AVID fan but have yet to see them live...now I fear it's too late.
Anyway, I can't choose a favorite album (how can you rank the kinds
of emotions that Fish puts into every song?), but I think CAS is
an absolutely incredible piece of art.
As far as I'm concerned, Marillion will never die...

| It may be too late to see the real Marillion live , but there is
a lot of material around recorded at various concerts , probably
the first being on the B-side of Garden Party - the riotous version
of "Margaret" , much better on 12 inch if you can get it , plus
the albums mentioned earlier in the topic . I've also got a couple
of scrap-books full of clipping starting in 1982 , which give a
much better impression of the development of the band than the
music alone . I don't know how much of Marillion's material you've
got , but bear in mind that there are a lot of great tracks on the
early B-sides , "Three boats down from the candy" and "charting
the single" to name but two . As you say , Long Live Marillion .

What about getting the 2 live work which are "Real to Reel" (52mn of Marillion
live during Fugazi tour probably and at low price - at least in France), and
the double CD "The thiefing Magpie" which has a very good misc stuff on the
first disk and the whole "misplaced Childhood" live on the 2nd disc. It's a
cheap CD too.
Then if you're looking for Singles you should get "B side themself" which is
a compilation of all the previously unreleased on LP singles. You have all the
stuff from "Brief Encounter" (Freaks, Lady Nina) you have "Tux on" which was
the Bside of "Sugar Mice", you have "Greandel"(20 mn), "3 boats...", "market
square heroes" ... and many more. I think it's on CD only but it's a good CD.
BTW : They already annouced 4 dates in France for the 3,5, 7 and 25 of October.
I got to go for the 4th time :-). I'd really like to how the new guy performs on
old stuff. Got to be strange.

| Mike ,
Having had a look through me records last night , I've found that
the pic disc of Hearts of Lothian is actually backed with a live
version of Chelsea Monday and the 7" version of HoL . The Picture
Discs I missed out are as follows :
Lavender 12" Pic Disc
Assassing 12" Pic Disc
Punch and Judy 12" Pic Disc
and a very poor quality interview picture disc released by Baktabak
and recorded sometime around Kayleigh
All the tracks on Bsides themselves are available on singles , it's
just that very few of the singles are still in print .
As for getting hold of any rarities , I don't really know , although
I have seen the Pic Disc of MSH advertised for sale in Record Collector
for about #35-#40 . I bought nearly all these records when they
came out , and managed to get hold of 12" , 7" and Pic Disc versions
in nearly all cases . I don't know where you're based , but all
I can suggest is keep browsing through the 'M's at record fairs.
BTW , another single I bought when it came out was the Fish/Tony
Banks collaboration "shortcut to somewhere" which may not strictly
be Marillion , but was recorded while Fish was with the band .
As for memorabilia , I have lots of press-clippings , ticket stubs,
fan-club newsletters etc , but they're not really for sale .

No-one seems to have made any comments about 'Hooks ...' cover,
personally I thought it was trash, having seen the cover of the album
though it certainlly makes up for it, it may not be a Mark Wilkinson
masterpiece but it certainly is in the MARILLION image.
Even thought MARILLION seem to be heading towards their roots, Steve
Hogarths only going to sing M.C. and Clutching at Straws tracks on the
coming tour, so it looks like we'll never see a true MARILLION gig again
which doesn't mean to say that the future gigs aren't going to be as
good, just different that's all.

RE: "...the best Marillion"
I'd definitely invest in "Script for a Jester's Tear", up to this point
it comes over as the most complete, consistently-good album. If you
like the raw stuff, "Fugazi" is also a must. And from what you said
about "Kayleigh", it seems "Misplaced Childhood" wouldn't be such a bad
choice (there are some flashes of class in it every now and again....).
All utterly personal opinion, of course ...

Did I read a couple of notes back that my Marillion Pic Discs
may be worth a penny or two.
While I was telling the world about how great Twelfth Night
were, my mate from Aylesbury was going on about a group called
Marillion. He even sent a bootleg tape or two. Then they released
M.S.Heros which I bought on 7" and later on 12" Pic Disc. I carried
on buying Pic Discs after that. I can't remember them all, but they
include Garden Party 12" Pic Disc, Punch the Judy shaped Pic Disc.
Assassin 12" Pic Disc and a couple of others.
Are these worth anything now ?
Stuart P.
P.S. Does anybody have the singles released from Twelfth Nights
last album (on the Virgin record label) or anything by I.Q.
(Gosh, this the bring back memories of the great British prog. rock
revival !)

I was recently offered #40 for my MSH 12" Pic Disc . This , if memory
serves , is probably due to the fact that only about 5000 were
pressed . As for the others , I'm not sure , but I'm hanging on
to all mine (as listed a few back) . I think the next most valuable
is not a picture disc , but the 12" of Garden Party which came with
a free poster , again for about the first 5000 copies I believe.

Hey Steve!
This Steve in the US sure knows about them. I also started this
note looking for info about them because I heard a lot about
them being compared to early Genesis. Yes, it's true there not
known well here but who cares. I also loved Genesis when I first
heard _Trespass_ and I found it in a Jazz bin!
I guess I'll have to make a trip to Tower Records in Boston. All
I see in New Hampshire is the recent live release.

| Heorot's plea and Grendel's awakening
-------------------------------------
Midnight sun bids moors farewell retreats from charging dusk
Mountains echo curfews bell signal ending tasks
They place their faith in oaken door cower in candlelight
The panic seeps through bloodstained floors
As Grendel stalks the night
Earth rim walker seeks his meals prepare the funeral pyres
The shapers songs no longer heal the fear within their eyes
Wooden figures pagan gods stare blindly cross the sea
Appeal for help from ocean fogs for saviours born of dreams
They now their lives are forfeit now priestly heads must bow in
shame
They cannot save the trembling crowd that flinch in Grendel's name
As Grendel leaves his mossy home beneath the stagnant mere
Along the silent valleys roam to Hrothgars Hall so clear
He knows that victory is secured dragons charm will testify
His claws will drip with mortal blood while moonbeams haunt the
sky
Grendel's Journey
-----------------
Silken membranes span his path fingerprints in dew
Denizens of twilight lands humbly beg him through
Mother nature's bastard child shunned by leaf and stream
An alien in an alien land seeks solace within dreams
The shaper's lies his poisoned tongue malign with mocking harp
Beguiling queen her innocence offends his icy heart
Lurkers at the threshold
------------------------
Hounds freeze in silence bewitched by the reptiles spell
Sulphorous essence pervades round the grassy dell
Heorot awaits him like calf to the butcher's knife
Stellular heaven ignore even children's cries
Screams are his music
Lightning his guide
Raping the darkness
Death by his side
Chants rise in terror flee round the oaken beams
Flickering firelight portraying the grisly scene
Warriors advance prepare for the nightmare foe
Futile their sacrifice as even their hearts must know
Heroes' delusions
With feet in the grave
Lurker at the threshold
Cares not for the brave
So you thought your bolts and your locks would keep me out
You should have known better after all this time
You're gonna pay in blood for all your vicious slander
Your ugly pale skins with your putrid blue eyes
Why should I feel pity when you kill your own and feel no shame
God's on my side and sure as hell I'm gonna take no blame
You believe that you're immune to all of Mother Nature's laws
You lust for gold with sharpened swords
When your hoards are gathered and your enemies left to rot
You pray with bloodstained hands at the feet of your pagan gods
Then you try to place the killer's blade in my hand
Cry for justice , distort the truth
Well I've had enough of all your pretty , pretty speeches
Receive your punishment , expose your throats to my
Righteous claws - and let the blood flow

460.51 | Marillion Live in Vitroles | CASEE::LALLI | Didier - BCE Valbonne - ext. 828.5423 | Tue Oct 10 1989 10:52 | 58 |

I went to see Marillion in Vitroles, next to Marseille (South-Est of France).
The opening group was a french group called Arrakeen I had never heard of before.
I can't tell you much about them coz due to some organisational problems we were
still outside when they started (and I hate to come in late ... but they only
opened 2 little doors to allow the whole crowed in ...?) Anyway when Marillion
came we were in.
I had never seen the new singer before and I was surprised by its look. He
reminds me alot Jim Kerr (for haircut and the way he was dressed and also the
way he was dancing around) and he look pretty young.
They played (from memory) :
The king of sunset Town
After you
Script for A jester's tear
Then I lost the order but :
The uninvited guest
Warm wet circles
Slainte Mhath
Easter
Holloway Girl
Berlin
Kayleigh
Lavender
Heart of Lothian
Seasons end
The space
Hooks in you
1st Encore :
Incomunicado
2nd Encore
Market Square Heroes
I may miss a few.
I've got to admit that I liked this concert a lot (and I have seen the "Fugazi"
tour, the "Missplaced..." and "Clutching..." tours too). The singer has a good
voice and keep it till the end of the concert. The new songs are MUCH more
powerful live and I like the new LP a lot more now than before the concert.
The musicians are still very good, their sound is perfect.
I only miss maybe the "presence" of Fish (he was twice taller and wider than
Steve is :-) and also it was a little too short (1h50).
Anyway don't hesitate to go because it's good.

in true Marillion style , "technical difficulties" have slowed it
down . This loosely translated means EMI didn't want it released
at the same time as the "Marillion LP .
The new single is out any time now (Fish , that is) , however ,
and it is apparently 'brilliant' . What did we expect ? Of course
it's going to be brilliant .

Finally bought a new JVC on Friday , so I've managed to listen to
the single a few times .
It has to be said that MC fans will probably not enjoy this song,
although those that appreciated some of the more politically (for
want of a better word) motivated songs on Clutching.. will almost
certainly find themselves in love with it after two or three hearings
State of Mind starts off slowly , and never reaches a real 'rock'
crescendo , but what does that matter ? Fish's vocals are as strong
as ever , and his lyric writing hasn't faltered either apart perhaps
for the opening couplet "I don't trust the Government , I don't
trust alternatives ,".
All in all this is a worthy first solo single , and though it probably
won't chart , anyone (and not just Marillion fans) with an ear for
something a bit different with some intelligence behind it would
be well advised to search out a copy .

Well,WHat did you think of Fish.!!!!
I saw him last nite (7th) at Portsmouth..
What can I say.
He was absolutely....."Magic..!!!"
As the curtains drew back there was the familiar shape on the
man who's live voice we have yet to hear for about 18 months in
his new shape..
Well after a few of the new songs, with I think some new style and
definately the same strong vocals this was definately the Fish we
all know.Then.......a very familiar sound began...Punch and Judy.!!
Was this a Marillion concert or just Fish reliving some of the
old crowd moving numbers..!!!!
There were some more new tracks which I thought sounded very
good and to say the least original,More than "Seasons End.."
Also we were treated to
Script For A jesters Tear,
Fugazi,
Warm wet circles.
Kayleigh
Lavender
Well what else can I say..
All in all it was worth it, When It was over I thought well
The rest of the Band Are going to have to do quite alot to
Live upto what Fish has done on his own.
If you can get to go ...just go and see for your self.!!!
Catch you all soon

I saw Fish last night at Guildford Civic Hall, and what a gig it was!
It got off to a fabulous start with a rather good cover of Alex
Harvey's "The Faith Healer", along with some great new songs and all
the old Marillion favourites mentioned in the last reply.
The new stuff sounds very interesting - to my mind more understated than
the old Marillion stuff, the man is trying to get some very powerful
messages across in his lyrics. I for one will certainly buy the album.
The band were tight (especially the rhythm section), the sound was very
good - I was left with the overriding impression that this was one Fish
that needed Marillion less than he needed a bicycle. Were Marillion
simply the Fish Band?

I really don't aggree with that. But I guess that's a matter of taste ;-)
My impression is that having powerful voice, lyrics and charisma isn't enough
to produce a very good LP. Also adding traditional instrumentals part is strange
but nothing else.
I fact I was (very happily) surprised by the Marillion latest LP (cos we
had doubted about the after-fish) while I was (a lot) disapointed by the
Fish solo (that everybody sweared, would be a masterpiece).
Of course this is only IMHO

Of course it's just a matter of taste , but I think Fish has produced
a very good album . Perhaps not a masterpiece , but then again how
many artists have ?
I think the difference is that Marillion have changed direction
, but Fish has developed his direction to improve on what he was
trying to do with Marillion circa 83/84 ...
I have listened to the Marillion album , though I've yet to buy
it , but it seemed a lot weaker than Vigil... , with very little
variation between one song and the next .
again , all IMHO .. 8-)

| Marillion was in Nice last night. They serioulsy rocked the house. The show was
much better than last september show in Marseille. Steve Hoggart is getting
better and better on stage. Steve Rothery was so good. The atmosphere was wild.
They were surprise how well people would sing along with them. Steve H said
a few words in French like "It's warm in here" which was absolutely true.
They change a bit the show. We had the whole "Season's end", but also 3 cuts
from "Misplaced...", 4 from "Clutching..." and again "Script for...". Again
ghood performance of Steve on old stuff. They gave an acoustic (12 strings
guitar) version of "After me" in the 2nd encore. They end up with a wild
"incommunicado" followed by "Market square heroe"/presentation of musicians
as usual.
In the middle of Easter, just when Steve started his solo, he broke a string,
the band kept on playing, and he came back a few seconds later, with a big
smile like "sorry for that but ..." and restarted the whole solo. That was
funny.
That was a very good concert, 2nd best of the 5 times I've seen Marillion. And
I don't think the absence of Fish was a problem last night.

Although I can't remember what they're like that much, no excuses really,
but I can't stand getting up and putting on CD singles every 10 minutes.
'Jack and Jill' comes off the B side of 'State of Mind' very repetative
and similiar to most of the album.
'The Release' I presume comes off 'Easter' as it's the only one I haven't
got.
While 'Bell In The Sea' comes off the B side of 'Uninvited Guest'. From
what I remember this was one of the best tracks to have been released
by Steve's Marillion why it's on the B side of a 12" I'll never know.
There again wasn't 'Grendel'. Not quite such a classic though.
Has anybody seen 'The Company' released yet? It was supposed to have
been out a few months back, but none of the shops I went to had even

The last time I saw them was just before Christmas for the 'Seasons
Greetings' tour at the Town and Country club and they were superb. They
played a couple of tracks from the forthcoming album that sounded very
promising indeed as well as the usual bag of goodies.
I must admit it took me a while to adjust to Steve Hogarth after Fish'
departure as I didnt think things would ever be the same again but I
now enjoy Marillion just as much as I ever did before if not more so.
Steve's voice is excellent.
I also saw Fish about this time last year for his solo tour which was a
really good night out (also at Hammersmith). He can still get the
crowd going crazy.
So I think now you get the best of both worlds and not as bad as Id
originally thought when I heard that Fish was leaving.
Does anyone know when the new Marillion album is actually coming out
I havn't heard any firm dates as yet?
Trish.

| A little belated now, but I've just read all the other notes.
When I knew Fish in '81 (we all called him Derek then), he was a normal
bloke who was a bit of a plonker about this great musical future he
believed was coming to him (he was a great believer in palmistry and
this gypsy had told him etc, etc.)
The concert reviews show that overnight he transformed into this
god-like figure - makes you wonder about all the other pop-stars..
We didn't believe he was going to get anywhere because the bands demo
tapes all sounded like...you've guessed it - Genesis. And I preferred
the real thing.

| Hi,
fancy finding a Marillion note! I have been a fan of this group for
about 5-6 years now and have all of the studio albums but no live ones.
Being a Marillion fan is a lonely business in New Zealand...
I must agree with the ravers about the new Fish album. I find "Seasons
End" is pleasant, but only a couple of songs really impress (namely
"Easter", "Univited guest", "After Me"). "Vigil", on the other hand
impresses me as an album as well as having a couple of excellent
tracks, with only a couple of duds ("View from a Hill" and "Cliche"
predominantly).
BTW I am also a big early Genesis fan (and Peter Gabriel, Phil Who???),
and reckon that the very early stuff beats anything that Marillion have
done for inventiveness, tho' Genesis have slid downhill since then.
my rave for the day,
Brent.

Hi,
another Marillion liker, from Germany.
I've been a true Marillion Fan for about 5 Years. And I still do like
them. I've seen them live for 10 times. Yes, and I do like Fish a lot.
A bit more, now, than Marillion. He has a good Band an a better Drummer
as Ian Mosely. I've seen him live for about 3 times. One gig was is a
small Club. I stood in front of the stage and the stage was only two
foot high. Great experience. I've met Fish after one Gig. He's really
a great guy.
For all those, who interesting in, I'm going to write down my Marillion
collection. If anybody has any interest in some of those items, please
send me a mail, as I like to sell this stuff (but like to hold the
CD's).

| Ive got tickets for Hammersmith in September which Im really looking
forward to as the concert front for this year has been pretty dismall
so far.
What are the views on the new single then? When I first heard it I
wasn't sure but after a few listens its grown on me, not as powerful as
usual but nevertheless I really like it.
I guess the album must be out soon if it hasnt been released already.
They gave it a good review in Q but then Im not sure if thats a good
thing or not.

Late review.
I've heard the new Marillion Album "Holidays In Eden" on CD. I have to
say, that I was very impressed by the first song, which has a fantastic
groove in the middle. But all the other tracks remembered me back to
"Seasons End". Same Stuff. Same Guitar (someone should go and show some
new chords to Steve Rothery, also how he get's able to use other
sounds), Keyboards (no word on Mark Kelly) and at last same
Drums, which Ian Mosely's playing in this way since "Clutching At
Straws". Sounds really like side three and four of "Seasons End". And
at last the voice. Ok, it was a hard job to do. But Steve Hogarth
hasn't that impressed voice like Fish has. So a big part of the music
get's lost. I was a very big Marillion fan since 1987. But now I don't
like them anymore. I'm not going to see them live this year, here in
Hamburg, as I've seen them for 11th times (10th with Fish). It's
enough. They do the same way like Modern Talking. They do cover their
own songs. It's only boring stuff.
Now I'm waiting for the release of Fish's new album. Seem's more
interesting. I've already saved a ticket for his show in December.
That's all...

Well guys (& gals)
I have just got my fingers on a copy of the latest single and all I can
really say is that I hope first impressions don't last to long, and may
be it will grow on me.
I hear that the album is out here in the UK and suprisingly enough it
seems to be doing rather well. I have not yet decided if I will go this
year and see any concerts, I will decide after I have listened to the
album.
However on the Fishy side, I have some more good info, For those of you
who remember, Fish combined his talents a few years back with Tony
Banks of Genesis and release the track "Shortcut to Somewhere", well
they have teamed up again on Tony's latest Solo Album. Fish is only
singing 1 track on this LP but I have heard it, and to tell the truth
it sounds "Damm Good". Very much in the ilk of the early Marillion.
Fish's new album will be out later on this year (according to all
rumors), and I belive he has change recording label, so I shall wait
with bated breath on its arrival. I shall definately be getting my
ticket for Fish.
Ahh well I better go,
Catch you later
Dave

| just in case anyone is still following this note...
by now most M fans have probably heard/purchased the new Marillion and
Fish albums (Holidays in Eden and Internal Exile, respectively).
Personally, I like both albums, but they really are pretty mediochre.
The last tracks are probably the best on "Eden" (This Town, The Rakes
Progress, 100 nights), although the party is pretty reasonable too.
Internal exile is a reasonable album as a whole, but no shining
masterpieces here. I'd class both of them as "Easy Listening", pretty
sad consodering the grunt that was the old Marillion. Much like Genesis
really, progress = mellowing = slush.
Oh yeah, Fish performs two tracks on Tony Bank's album "Still". I can't
remember the first (the name OR the song!), the second is called
"Another Murder of a Day", you can tell that Fish wrote the lyrics.
Overall this album is pretty awful...
The last of a dying breed?

I've heard both Holidays in Eden, and Seasons End, but none of the Fish albums
(except the singles). I would go so far as to say I like Marillion with Steve
Hogarth, but they are not the same band without Fish. The last 2 albums
have been more commercial, with standard poppier type songs, but they have
failed to recapture the chart success they had with Kayleigh. I have always
felt they are rather an unfashionable band to like, but that's not stopped me
before!! :-) I think that that now, without Fish, they have lost half of their
uniqueness, because he was such a major influence lyric-wise and a brilliant
frontman.
I saw Marillion last Christmas at the Town & Country, and enjoyed it. I would
probably go again if they do a meduim size venue (ie. not Wembley Arena!).
Anyone know if they are doing any Christmas shows this year?
Thanks,
Emma

They are currently doing a European tour, and will be returning
to the UK next month to do a few more dates.
I saw them recently in Aylesbury. Steve Hogarth is the lead singer
still. They played the whole of the new album, Brave, all 70 mins
of it!! Trouble is, that didn't leave much time for the older
stuff, which is what I really wanted to hear.

| Headed down to HMV yesterday afternoon to see the man himself.
I expected it to be a quick rendition of his new single, followed by some
signing of whatever, but I was very wrong.
He started at 5pm, with his 2 guitarists, Robin Boult & Frank Usher on 12 & 6
string acoustics resp., with his new single 'Lady Let it lie', then did the 'B'
side 'Out of my life', then a song of his new album, called Suits which comes
out on May 31st. He then did Sugar Mice and finished with Internal Exile. All
told he played for hour. I even bought the single, the first single I've
bought since they started coming out on CD ;-)
He also got one of the members of the audience to fix his mike stand when the
leg fell off, and when the girl in front of me refused to clap during The last
song, he came over and made her. A very sound man indeed, definitely not spoiled
by fame.

Marillion did a very good gig in Helsinki! People were pleased
and the band was enjoying to play there. Only exception was
when the singer was doing a silent ballad, some a***ole shouted
something nasty and the guy left the stage. But after that
there were no interrupts.
Personally I enjoyed the most "Eastern" and "Garden Party".
