456.1 | Toucans fly much higher??? | SHAPES::FIDDLERM | | Thu Jul 06 1989 13:37 | 23 |
| Yo!!! The new lp comes out on monday, so I'll get it then and let
you know.
I've been following Mike for at least 10 years now, and I don't
really think he has done anything of value since the Killing Fields
soundtrack, although I still buy everything he puts out! I guess
I'm just sentimental, but I also like Mike as a person. I wish
he would stop trying to write little pop songs with lyrics tho,
cos they're CRAP!! Witness side 2 of Islands.
As you may gather, I'm not too optomistic about Earth Moving. Is
Mike still big on the continent? He hasn't played live in the UK
since 83 at wembley. ( he was lined up for the Greenpeace bash at
the Albert Hall in 86, but Big Country decided that they hated him,
and he also made a brief appearance at a benefit for Colombian volcano
victims).
Anyway, I'll let you know next week.

456.2 | Look ! You can see the Earth Moving | KERNEL::PARRY | 16 bits R SXy | Fri Jul 07 1989 14:30 | 17 |
| Radio One had a feature on it a few days ago, (Newsbeat during the
Steve Wright show if I remember correctly).
Mike Oldfield got a bunch of journalists up in an aeroplane to give
the first playing of it. They said it was a Virgin plane and that
Virgin made most of their original money from the proceeds of Tubular
Bells.
Anyway, it's a collection of songs, not one of these long instrumental
things, with a lot of different singers. He admitted to not being
able to sing very well and said that they listen to tapes sent in
(to Virgin) and pick out the best singers.
They played bits of a couple of songs which sounded similar to stuff
on side two of Crises.

Did anyone see Mike on T.V.A.M. on Tuesday. Well wasn't he the Mike
Oldfield we all know. That down to earth hippy is preparing Tubular
Bells Part 3 & 4 without any synthesizers, Hooray!!! And about time
too!!
It May not be a great hit, but who cares it will satisfy all us
MIKE fans waiting for a decent piece of instrumental music. After
all it is what he is reknowned for. Any comments ?
Scott.

| This sounds like good news!! Do you have the interview on video
by any chance? When is the lp going to be released? Are there
any shows planned?
I have heard some stuff from Earth Moving, and I have decided against
buying it yet. This saddens me, because it is the first Oldfield
record since 1978 that I haven't been queing outside the record
store before it opened for. Have any of you guys heard it?
I think he needs a good kick up the backside to get him going again,
like David Bedford returning.
Is he still recording in Switzerland, or did he eventually sell
his studio there? Does he still live in Denham/Uxbridge? I remember
waiting outside his house in the rain, just for a glimpse of him.
Long ago times.

To answer your questions,
1. Yes, I do have the TVAM interview on video, I also have a
taping of the interview on TVAM (shown last year) where he
played Taurus 3, live.
2. I don't know when he plans to release Tubular Bells Part
3 & 4, but I do know he starts work on it next week.
3. Yes, there are shows planned, two that he mentioned in the
interview - at the Albert Hall and the new Docklands
development.
I bought the LP on Monday, and was really quite depressed when
I listened to it for the first time... but ... now I've heard
it about twenty times I really do like it. The songs are not
like those found on the Side 2 of Islands, which I rapidly grew
to hate. They have more in common with Discovery. I would recommend
you buy it, as it grows on you .... and don't forget, since
Mike is so popular, your record store might run out!!!
Does anybody get the Mike fanzine - AIRBORNE? It's brilliant
for background info about the man himself. Talking of Airborne,
does anybody have a copy of the album. I'd like to obtain one.
Mike you sound like a big fan, could you enter a list of all
your Mike Oldfield material. A friend of mine has the biggest
Mike collection I've ever seen. I am hoping that someone has
a bigger collection.

| yo! I'm going to see my parents this weekend, so I could get a
complete list by next week. As I recall, Airborne is the American
lp, with Platinum and an alternate Tubby bells on it , yeah. My
memory is going a little. If I've remembered right, I'll bring
it back next week and you can borrow it to tape it. I've gat a
few live tapes as well if your're intersted. Any chance of borrowing
the viddys (if VHS). And maybe a copy of Airborne?
I used to be in the Oldfield fan club, which disintergrated into
the Information Service, doe sthat still run? I also used to
communicate with a guy in County Durham, who had loads of live stuff,
etc, and produced regular listings. But he gave me a lot of hassle,
and I haven't had anything to do with him for yearts.
Yeah, there was a time I'd have put Oldfield before life, but maybe
I've changed over the past 4 yrs, but then so has the man.
Is it worth starting to call these venues to see if they know anything
about shows?
Catch you later.

There exists a copy of Ommadawn which says on the Cover and on the

However when you play the Record that track does not exist.
Does anyone have an explaination for this.

It's nice to hear from other MO fans among us DECcies. I have
a fairly good collection of MO records, although I don't see a big
point in most of the imports as they just package the same stuff
differently. Some of his singles contain some rare stuff, though.
Ever since I heard Ommadawn the first time I've felt that it's one
of the greatest musical pieces ever recorded. I also rate Hergest
Ridge and Incantations pretty high. I've listened to Earth Moving
a couple of times and I can't help but think that it's crap!
I too would be interested in subscription info for Airborne.
Any chance of one of you typing it in? Thanksadvance.

was the video for the single, and on this basis, I also have not
bought it yet because the single & last couple of albums were rubbish.
(I believe I've got everything else he's done, including
the quadraphonic boxed set with the drunken sailors hornpipe, as
well as Airborne. I even bought a 'Gong' album because he plays
on one track).

Well, it's better than the B-Side of Islands, but not much.
The lyrics in the songs are pathetic. Mike certainly doesn't show his
instrumental potential in this album. There is little, if any,
good guitar work.
Personally I started to feel somewhat suicidal when I heard the first
few tracks but by chance I happened to play 'Far Country' and was
sufficiently impressed to persevere with the rest of the album.
'Blue Night' is by far the best track on the Album, probably because
it has 'Maggie Reilly' on vocals.
The rest of the album is really not good enough, considering he
has taken since Islands (October 1987) to write it.
I haven't a clue why Virgin have released Earth Moving as the first
single, it is one of the worst on the LP. Although I recommend the
12" or CDS, which come with the -"(DISCO VERSION)"-...Excuse me for
laughing...of Earth Moving. It is far better than the 7" version
with alot of excellent guitar work.
Where did you see the video for Earth Moving. I have not been overly
impressed with the pulic relations. In fact I can't actually vouch
for seeing him on any prime time TV.
I have bought two 'Gong' albums and two 'David Bedford' Albums because
Mike performs on them.
I can't wait for TB Pt 3,4.
Scott.

3&4 depending on how you count them) on 9th September. Why ?! Is anyone
out there still interested in this man and his music? What does he hope
to achieve?
Last thing I got was Amarok, passable if you skip the first 30 minutes,
start halfway through and don't listen to it too often. Give up Mike.
Please.
A friend (I use the term loosely, you understand) said that it sounded
a lot like the original, but played on a Fairlight. Gosh.

He's done Earth Moving and Heaven's Open since then.
The first an album full of fine tunes with some
excellent guest singers including Chris Thompson but
let down by the fact that a lot of the music was done
with a sequencer and sounds like it.
The latter is an album of 4 pop songs with many layers
of sounds but done with a real drummer (the excellent
Simon Phillips) and a final track of sounds which would
almost not sound out of place on one of the more obsucre
radio 3 programmes.

You can tell that its based on Tubular Bells, a lot of the old themes
are in there. It did sound quite good tho (as much as I hate to say
it). The tune developed along quite happily, not changing every 30
seconds, and there were no #$%#@ lyrics. Sounded quite bland, no big
shocks, but probably the best thing he has recorded for 10 years or so.

The Wind Chimes tracks are sort of like Godley & Creme meets Art of

the others are more music-video oriented, but even so are still nice.
