| Tom Petty started playing music in the clubs down in Gainsville, Florida,
where he grew up. This was the home of a lot of southern rock bands, such as
Lynyrd Skynyrd, so there was a fairly active music scene. It was there that he
formed his band, the Heartbreakers, mostly with friends he went to school with
and played in the clubs with.
Tom and the band eventually moved to California in search of record contract,
and got signed to a small label called Backstreet Records. He released a
couple albums on Backstreet, which were distributed by MCA. Tom eventually had
a lot of problems, and ended up suing Backstreet to get off that label. He
then was signed to MCA directly.
Discography:
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ("Breakdown", "American Girl")
You're Gonna Get It ("I Need to Know", "Listen To Her Heart")
Damn The Torpedoes ("Even the Losers", "Refugee")
Long After Dark
Hard Promises
Southern Accents
Pack Up The Plantation (2 album, live set)
Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)
And, of course, he has a new solo album out, as well as being a member of the
Travelling Willburys.
I'm not a real expert on TP, so someone may be able to give you more info. But
that's a start for you anyways.....

re:

I picked each of these up for 3.99 over the last couple of years
(they appear to be on special offer). Tom Petty is always good value for
money (even at full price)...you will find very few duff tracks on
any of his albums.
Damn the Torpedoes is a classic which stands up today, 11(?) years on.
I'm pretty sure Bryan Adams has worn out a copy of this one ^).
(compare and contrast "Refugee" by Petty and Adams' first hit, the name of which
eludes me).
I was told last weekend that the new solo TP album is released tomorrow
(29/6/89).

German radio plays the new Petty album constantly, a couple
of tracks are good but most of them sound like the Wilburys.

| Hello there,
I've been a TP fan for a long while now, I really do love the
Heartbreaker's sound, Stan Lynch's drumming steams along underpinning
Mike Cambell's terrific lead work. It struck me a surprising that
on the new Lp all of the Hearbreaker's except Lynch played on it
..so why the need for a solo lp ?
I saw the guy supporting Dylan in '87 and was well impressed, along
with Nils Lofgren, Tom Petty is always on my buy list.
