an album of cover versions.

| I also heard that the Eurythmics are recording film soundtrack material.
They have left the RCA/Ariola label and are now on Arista!!!
Dave and Annie even posed recently for publicity photos with Clive
Davis (each wearing a party hat). That label strikes me as a bit
predisposed to MOR, but hopefully the Eurythmics will rise above.
I'm a big fan of the duo, and was disappointed to learn that "Savage"
was their lowest-selling release since "In the Garden" (their first
unreleased-in-the-US album which is, IMHO superior to "Sweet Dreams").

| Very surprised and disapointed to here that "Savage" was their lowest
selling since "In The Garden". But do the sales figures include
video sales figures which have apparently been one of the highest for
a vidoe album on general release?
It must be about time for them to do a complete Eurythmics, Box
set or Live ablum of some kind, they have had over 20 top 30 hits,
so if some groups such as Banarama get away with a singles album
of less than a dozen so called hits, when are we gong to see Dave
and Annie's compilation.

| Went to see them at Wembley last night, WELL ACE! Best of all was
when they were by themselves.
I think that they are very talented and they certainly made a wonderful
live sound. The music just kept on getting better and better as
the evening raced by. It seemed they had only been on for about
five minutes when they played their last song and disappeared.
The crown was a lot better behaved than when I went to see the Cure,
certainly a lot older too!

Positive words fail me - to say stupendous is to be understated.
The whole evening was great after they came on - the backing band
were a bit iffy a bit like a very primitive U2 or Simple Minds but
totally unable to sing.
The crowd old???... Strange, I didn't notice. The atmosphere was
electric - they came back for a couple of enchores after everybody
refused to stop clapping and stamping..
Music from all the albums but for In The Garden

| The Eurythmics arrived in Boston yesterday for the first stop of their
US tour. They gave a little acoustic performance in a terminal
building at Boston's Logan airport, portions of which appeared on the
television news last night! I missed seeing the news, but am psyched about
seeing their concert tonight, especially after reading some of the
raves in this note entry. For US readers: Keep checking those
Saturday Night Live listings, as Dave and Annie are scheduled to
appear at some point during the tour.

about the *mega*tours of late. The tons and tons of stage
sets, lighting and special effects that get carted around,
taking sometimes days to assemble, and all adding, of course,
to the cost of the ticket.
Well, it seems everyone will be watching the Eurythmics tour
because its the first major tour in a while to have an almost
bare stage and a minimum of lighting.

Sue, there's a v good rock (fiction) biography called "Espedair Street"
by Iain Banks, which may interest you. Parts deal with tour-chaos etc
and it's also a very good read.
If you can't find it in the States, then I could forward it, or give it

446.40 | Review of Boston Concert | ASABET::MCLAUGHLIN | | Wed Nov 08 1989 15:49 | 50 |
| The Boston area concert last night was spectacular. I have every recording by
the Eurythmics that I can get my hands on, and even my high expectations were
exceeded. The musicians were among the finest available, the sound system was
the best (crystal clear, not too loud) and the entertaining visuals never
detracted from the music. Annie was in great voice last night, which was the
biggest surprize for me. The quality of her voice is well known to vary,
but her vocals last night were even better than on the "Be Yourself Tonight"
album (I think that her clarity, proficiency, and range were in top form on
that album.)
I have read various contradictary reports of staging in the media. The
descriptions ranged from a minimal light, spartan set to a rags to riches
scenario at the start of the show. In fact, the stage is not bare-bones, the
duo used plenty of impressive lighting effects, and had the requisite fog
machine in operation. Perhaps they used more austere lighting and props during
the European leg of the tour. For example, there is a large white screen behind
the group, onto which various lighting effects are projected. During
"Missionary Man", Annie stands at the front of the stage flooded with deep red
light, and flames rise on the giant screen behind her, suggesting hell. It was
a hoot. The curly blond wig, slinky dress, and harsh white lighting were used
for "I Need A Man."
Another surprize was that Joniece Jamison sang "Sisters" alone and in its
entirety while Annie was changing clothes. The audience loved Joniece, and
cheered everytime she sang. She looks and sounds similar to Tina onstage from
a distance.
The acoustic set was great too. "Would I Lie To You", probably their hardest
rocker, was performed acoustically, and it is excellent.
For those who do not want to know how the show begins: STOP!
A woman with long dark hair and a negligee that Cher would be embarrased to
wear walks onto a bare stage (with a huge black curtain behind her.) She looks
like Annie from afar, and picks up an acoustic guitar and sings a complete
song in Spanish. The voice is beautiful, and sounds just like Annie, so it may
be a recording. I did not recognize the song, so it may or may not be a
Eurythmics song. She then sings a heavily accented portion of "Savage", after
which she performs all sorts of acrobatics and dances across the stage. Since
her long hair could not possibly have been a wig, I figured the woman was not
Annie. She pulled long black strips from the giant curtain to reveal the band,
which began playing "We Two Are One". Dave and Annie came out and began.
Annie just drips with talent and charisma. You cannot help but keep your eyes
riveted on her, marveling at her stage presence and ability to deliver the
goods with a punch. She did not speak but to introduce the band after the
second encore, and yet she seemed anything but aloof during the concert.

446.41 | Sweet Dreams are made of ....Annie & Dave!! | HYEND::SCHILTON | When they said sit down,I stood up | Wed Nov 08 1989 16:42 | 21 |
| Shawn is 100% right! They were amazing. Dave Stewart is so cool
and Annie Lennox has a stage presence and a way about her that is
undescribable. My partner is crime was drooling and if we'd been
any closer to the stage I would have had to peel him off her. (We
were about 25 feet from the front.)
Annie has this piercing gaze and no one could resist her teasing
smiles and swaying hips. The first part of the show was done in
a black lace bra and old torn satin negligee. When she did I Need
a Man, in the blond curly wig, a fellow followed her around the stage
with a hand-held spotlight.
To my mind, it was a bare stage ( the white backdrop)with the simplest
of effects, strobes, the stage spots, and the lights played on the
backdrop. But it was the sheer simplicity that made them so effective.
As she said in the press conference at the airport, it's their music
that is most important and by using a minimum of effects it was the
music that came through - without distraction!
The only disappointment, in my mind, was that the Centrum was only
about half full ... folks don't know what they missed!!!

| I've just purchased the limited edition numbered version (no. 255)
of the 12" single "Don't ask me why", which has the accoustic versions
on the 'b' side, and comes complete with a limited edition poster of
the Revival tour; unfortunately the start appears to be recorded
very duffly such that until about a minute into the track of "and
then the rains came down" is slow. Now should I keep it due to
the rarity value or should I take it back?
I also have nearly all other versions of the single and it is fab
but I'ld love to have a good recording of the accoustic tracks..
does anybody else have a copy of this?

| I checked the SAVAGE credits, and found no evidence that "I Need You" is a
concert type of live recording. The song was recorded in the same studio as
almost all of the others. Perhaps "I Need You" was produced to sound as
though it was recorded in a small club or something. The Eurythmics are pretty
slick producers and have a history of experimentation, so the song may not be
what we tend to think of as 'live'. There is a similar dubious 'live' song on
REVENGE, entitled "In This Town". Their trickery is good though, as I was
fooled too!
Since we are on a trivia bent, I noticed an odd noise on my WE TWO ARE ONE disc
over the weekend, and I wonder whether it is a disc or player anomaly, or
whether a song contains a defect of sorts. Exactly 17 seconds into "King &
Queen Of America", I hear a "boom" that doesn't sound as though it belongs.
The sound is similar to that of something dropping in the backround on a live
recording. Anyone else hear it on their CD?

| Personally I reckon that the sax record is pretty good, the fact
that as an instrumental and it's reached so high in the charts
indicates that your opinion Mazzer, may not be that of the record
buying public.
Annie Lennox, for your information, is actually devoting much of
the next two years towards helping the homeless of this country,
having spent much of the last five years not only writing performing
some of the best music (IMHO ;')) around but also helping charities
such as Amnesty - inc. personally campaigning in Red Square for
the setting up of the first Amnesty International office in Moscow.
As for Dave Stewart's guitar playing being mediocre, that's your
opinion - I happen to find him quite a talented guitarist and so
do many of the other music listeners that I know.

| .58 I don't know if it's me or what, but Dave Stuart's guitar sounds a

Well technically a guitar will always be out of tune except for one
specific note per string. However, that applies to all guitars not just
Mr Stewart's. Perhaps you have a critical ear...

| Actually I probably shouldn't have mentioned it because I will run out
of theoretical knowledge before I've fully explained it (and anyway
it's a rathole)..
Essentially, when you fretting the strings, you have to push the string
to the fretboard to make it sound. This stretches the string slightly,
altering its tension and thus its pitch. In addition, once the string
is touching the two frets either side of where your finger is, it still
hasn't quite reached the fretboard. Pressing that extra few thou
stretches it (relatively) quite a lot more, but now the amount of
stretch depends on how far the string has to travel to hit the
fretboard, and this distance is dependent on the thickness of the
string.
Guitars make allowances for all of those factors, but the result is
that they are a compromise, and thus the guitar is always slightly out
of tune. (I bet you wish you hadn't asked now!).

| The new Eurythmics single is released on Monday, it is Angel, somewhat
of a bluesy sort of song, very mellow and relaxed, just a touch
sad and poignant but very very good (IMHO ;') )

| Has anyone heard the (Should Have Been) Greatest Hits compilation
by the band _the Tourists_? This band contains Annie and Dave
(in addition to others) and predates their Eurythmics work.
Does Annie do all the vocals? Is it simular to early Eurythmics
(ie _In the Graden_)? Recommendations? I've found it available as
a discount compact disk here in the states and might pick it up.

446.68 | Worth buying ! | WOTVAX::MOOREP | I hate having to balance my cheque book! | Wed May 09 1990 10:12 | 13 |
| Go for it !
I'd say it was worth buying just to hear from what the Eurythmics developed.
Lead vocals were shared between Annie and Pete Coomes (sp?) although I think
Pete did most. I find his voice annoying after a while.
Much prefer the Tourist tracks "I Only Wanna Be With You" and "So Good To Be
Back Home" where Annie does the singing.
Anyone seen the new Eurythmics video yet: "We Two Are One Too"
Lots of clippings and back stage tom foolery and of course the proper videos to
all the released tracks. Love the bit where the roles are reversed. Annie picks
up the guitar and Dave does the singing!

| I've just bought the video, I'll view it tonight, I've also just
bought the new single - Angel - the 12" has a b-side of Sweet Dreams
Nightmare mix, which I fear may be the case, as I reckon that most
of the re-mixes done of Eurythmics stuff has been disastrous, they
try and mix in loads of dance drums and stuff, blerugh!

| Apparently this mix, on the double "A" sided 2nd 12" release of Angel is
raising quite a few ears in the nightclubs. Although it sounds nothing like
Eurythmics save for the excerpts from "Sweet Dreams" I think it's pretty
good has that upto-the-minute beat.
Have you spotted the cheeky excerpt from Propaganda's "Dream Within A Dream"
track towards the end ?

Hi Keefe,
Still the same I see!!:-):-)
Well just to put the record straight - the note that provoked
this merciless onslaught :-):-) was signed JJ - that is NOT
me, me being MAZZER. JJ is/was the temp who stood in for me
while I was away on maternity leave. So any notes written
under my name for the period 7th July 1989 to 17th April 1990
are not by me. Phew - now I've got that off my chest!! I'd just
like to say I like the Eurythmics. So there...
