443.0. "NME/Melody Makers Tapes" by KIRKTN::SPOTTER (Info Freako) Fri Jun 16 1989 15:43

Over the years I have collected a number of tapes which have been produced
by the NME and Melody Maker. I have listed them below but just wondered,
if anyone else has collected them and what they think of them, also there
are a lot that I have missed through the years so others might be able to
list some more ... NME did a full discography of the tapes/albums that they
had offered but I threw out that copy!

Copy 001 NME/Rough Trade - C81 - Featuring: Scritti Politti, Wah! Heat,

    Stuart, I have a few of the NME tapes, which I play mostly in the
    car. Some great stuff on them, but some drivel too.

    Anyway, for some reason unbeknown to me, I cut out the listing that
    NME did a while back - it covers up to NME035 (The World At One).
    Would you like a copy of this via internal mail?

    Re -.2 "plus more"

    From what I remember, "Plus More" are from Scotland. They just ended
    up their American tour at Boston's Summer Fest on the Commons. I heard
    they were wild back in the days when they used to play support for
    Love and Money. (;-)).

    Anyone know anything about the NME video tape offer of a few years
    back? I seem to recall that it contained some Smiths rarities (
    something to do with Charming man?). Also had the Clash doing Rock
    the Casbah?

	If you know a more appropriate place for this...

	Yet another Creation sampler is included with an issue of Select
	"rare creation". A live Ride track off their new album from a
	Sweden radio/TV broadcast last summer, and other various Creation
	artists. Memory isn't what is used to be!

443.10NME stuff on cd!SUBURB::DIVERLSat May 09 1992 19:274

    According to this week's NME, they will be issuing some selected
    "classic compilations" on cd in the next few months.

443.11WRKSYS::WALLACEDirk, Nasty, Stig & BarryThu Jun 20 1996 15:1026
    Steve Wallace, stateside.

    I bought a copy of NME a few weeks ago at NEWBURY COMICS (they're a
    CD/BOOK/POSTER/SHOE store w/ a relatively good selection of indi/alt
    music).

    I'd never read it before and picked it up only because of the "FREE
    CASETTE" taped to the front of it. Got it in the car, took the tape off
    of it and found a litttle message reading something to the affect
    (effect?) that due to copyright blah blahs, the tape should not be
    distributed outside the U.K. Being an honest fellow, I immediately
    returned it to the store and called ASCAP & BMI to confiscate the
    remainder of the copies on the shelf (yeah...right)

    Anywho, the question is, how often does NME do these give aways? I'd
    like to keep my eye out for them but I'm not even sure how often NME is
    published (weekly? Monthly?).

    In lieu of that, are the tapes available elsewhere?

    One more thingy, it may have been me, but is this NME mag always filled
    with such drivel? The record reviews were pretty good but some of the
    articles were just plain silly (and maybe that was the objective.)

443.12The tapes are normally very good though.CHEFS::CROSSAOpel Manta for sale - Call 7830 2919Thu Jun 20 1996 16:3417
    Have to be a little short here.......

    The tapes pop up every few months or so and there seems no rigid dates
    involved. I am surprised you have a cover mounted tape over there -
    fair play to your dealer for getting the copies in!

    The "style" of the articles does border on the inane/drivel depending
    on newsworty articles (or not) at the time. Currently the NME are
    getting over the Blur v Oasis nonsense that they helped build up.

    The problem is they have only one other competitor in the weekly music rags
    over here so sometimes they do not seem to try too hard at their job!
